windows 7 still viable?
you can no longer browser ylilauta, the Finlands answer for 4chan

(it has also international section which is english only)

no browser that currently runs in windows 7 is able to access the site

this happened 2 weeks ago when there was alleged porn raid on the site and all threads started getting the same porn image as an answer to the thread (porn is banned from the site it is meant to be useable for 14 years olds as well as 54 years olds)

I didnt personally witness the porn spam but I guess it could be a believeable situation

so the sysop somehow changed the site code so that no "old" browser can access the site anymore, including windows 7 browsers (thorium, supermium)

newest firefox opens the site just fine but does firefox run in windows 7? answer is no.

Perfectly reasonable decision to make, a vanishingly small amount of usually undesirable users still use it so why support it?

idk man, it's viable in the sense that if you can get it to do what you want you're golden. But if it stops working for what you use it for, probably time to move somewhere else. I'm not a 7 hater, I still have an install that's actually usable for software from 13ish years ago to mod ps3 games but with older software like this you have to accept it will probably die. Even recently this chrome mv2 shit is probably going to make my old thinkpad non viable. It can do everything assuming I have a usable install of chrome since it's optimization allows me to run everything perfectly. If I switch to any other browser though the performance hit is like 40%. If I cant block ads on that thing in chromium, I'm fucked and will have to just move on or find an alt way like yt-dlp or an alt front end.

Basically if you choose to stay on win 7, start adapting and getting used to not having certain things or install another OS or go hardcore into the niche windows 7 communities who are doing custom mods and updates themselves.

I love how Win7 baby ducks were all gangsta until web browsers dropped support for it, then they all started throwing tantrums like toddlers.
It killed any claim that they used Win7 because it only supported certain important software or hardware - no, it was a Reddit terminal, just like freetards (their close cousins).

It's been almost 6 long years since end of support, three newer versions have been EOL'd (8, 8.1 and now 10) and you are still under the delusion that its usable. Even Google has scrapped Windows 7 support now (you get a update your browser message in the default browser unable and you're unable to download another one unless you use a usb stick from a newer computer). Just because Firefox is still making token security updates to an ESR 30 versions out of date doesn't mean its viable.

If I was Cloudflare i would block Windows 7 at the router level (so you woudn't even see a failed verification page it would just say unable to connect). Plus also I noticed Fastly is doing Cloudflare style checks now.

This, it was bad enough when mainstream and hardware support was gone but you could still shitpost on the latest Firefox with windows 7, but it's to the point where you're relying on open source hacks to make shit work, which is basically what fucking Linux is, and you also can't get a new computer, that's the biggest limitation of sticking to Windows 7 that I wish I had moved on from years before, I was clinging onto a computer from 2011 like a dumbass and getting worse performance just to stick with Windows 7, meanwhile RYZEN and all this good shit came out year and years and I could've just been running Linux with full support and getting better performance on the editing apps I was sticking with windows 7 to use.

Well yes Anon, but it's not officially supposed to be on there like with an old AMD FX rig you just pop the usb in and the installer boots like it's meant to be, it takes a lot of fuckery to make stuff that wasn't suppoed to have 7 on it work, which kinda defeats the point of windows "just working" meanwhile I can get a bunch of parts at my local microcenter, plug in a Linux mint 22.2 USB and have a working computer that is going to outperform anything with Windows 7 on it, that was what pushed me over into Linux, the ease of it working and having great performance was gone when you consider how much faster and less power consooming computers around me were getting compared to my 125w potato with windows 7 on it.

Deal with the facts, Chromium is 31 versions out of date, Firefox is 28 out of date. Missing major features such as CSS has(), WebGPU and more, with AI acceleration being added to browsers Windows 7 gets even further behind. Statcounter reports less than 3% market share, and most of the remainder will upgrade when Windows 10 ends support taking out the remaining Windows 7 computers in corporate offices. For all intents and purposes, Windows 7 is dead on the internet, no matter how many jak faces you make out of the situation.

Google doesn't even load on old Windows versions by default anymore, when the front page of the internet isn't working, then its time to upgrade.

On what OS though? Linux like you might as well be using? Or the spyware editions of Windows you're trying to avoid by sticking with 7?

What the fuck is going on here? It also takes more system resources to run another whole ass OS under virtualization when one of the big reasons 7 is so good is because it doesn't take a ton of resources to run it, but that gets blown out the second you boot up a virtual machine and it's taking up however much ram you gave it plus CPU cycles.

Complete bullshit. I've been using Linux full time since 2005 and hardware support is incomparable. In 2005 to 2010 you had to research before you bought anything, especially wifi was dreadful and most hardware didn't work. Laptops had problems waking from suspend etc. Some hardware could be made to work but only with hours of painful bullshit. A lot of people had to fuck around desperately with crap like "ndiswrapper". last photoshop compatible with 7 (hell, even with XP) still mogs modern gimp or krita. Same goes for all the software for programming various small electronic peripherals, for radio signal decoding and many other things. Linux can only compete by being a controlled opposition of kikes who want you to be constantly connected to repositories (glorified cloud(tm)). There are still plenty of working web browsers though, so linux still cant compete, unless you fell for the meme and bought new hw.

I totally agree that Photoshop CS6 is the goat, that's why I use it on Windows 7 in my Linux Mint Virtualbox, your needs will outgrow stuff that has Windows 7 support Anon, I could probably still get away with what I had previously, but it's kinda nice having a CPU that goes faster and uses 65w instead of 125, and being able to upgrade to hot new shit that AMD drops, the people trying to run windows 7 on bare metal as their main machine are stuck in time, maybe they won't be less productive as time goes on, but they certainly can't be more productive because Windows 7 is abondonware, I loved the 14 years I spent using it, but it's done if you're relying on the community around it (like linux) to keep it going, meanwhile you don't even have the source code of build 7600 which actually would keep it going forever if people understood the kernel on the level of Linuxfags.

Software being open source doesn't magically make it more free or private. Linux is practically controlled by corporations and obsessed commiepedotroons, because without them, it would be in the same situation in which GNU Hurd is nowadays. Software itself is no longer maintainable by hobbyists only since late 80s or so. There is also no clean way to install software locally and offline, as everyone wants you to use repositories of some kind, therefore allowing kikes to tell you what you can or can't do on your computer. On Windows, especially older one, I can have all the software and firmware on usb stick or CDs and recreate my setup fully offline, you can't do this on troonix.

It does make it free Anon, if you and everyone had access to the source code of NT Kernel 6.1, people could make Windows 7 forever with new software to work for it, but it's proprietary so you end up having no control over it, and having backups of old software for your proprietary software is not freedom, Linux doesn't hang onto old outdated shit because with the way computers work, old software needs to be replaced, kernel and drivers constantly getting updated to work on new computers, that's what maintaining something is Windows 7 users are stuck using the same old computer, same old updated software, it's abondonware.

steam is using new compressions shit that doesn't work on the old client so you can't download/update games anymore.
there is a workaround with VxKex but now it broke for me and i can't get it to work again.
>To explain further, we recently enabled a new compression algorithm which is vastly better-performing, and will enable faster downloads with much lower CPU load on clients. It will also improve unlock times for preloads for users on SSD (for spinning disks, the disk writes are the bottleneck). This was good just to save CPU load but it is also necessary for the faster (> 1Gbps) internet speeds people have in some places now, and it also really improves the experience on the Steam Deck.
>New content coming in to Steam is now being compressed with this algorithm; existing content will not be converted. So if you're on an old client version for any of the reasons discussed here, there will still be many games in the catalog you can download and play (so long as they are not being updated, or if you can pin them to a particular build using branches supplied by the developer). Unfortunately we can't support having the data in both formats for new content.

>It's just silly to put in effort to stay on older software,
no, it's not. The effort I put in to keep using 7 is, in the end, fairly minimal, and it results in the best possible home OS experience for me. In contrast, I would have to put in significant effort fighting against the OS if I were to use 10 or 11 to make it just barely acceptable and not anywhere near the level of 7 for me.

10 and 11 not having a working classic theme is already almost a dealbreaker, and add on top of that everything else and it's not worth it, even considering all the hacks I have to do to get software to work on 7.

Linux is somewhat more acceptable. It's easier to change the look and feel but it's still a lot more work than 7 is and it won't run all my software or I'd have to run it through wine or whatever which I'll do at some point when I really can't get 7 to work anymore, but that's not now.

Everything from XP onwards is pretty much invincible, as you have plenty of people porting browsers and other software to it. And well, saying stuff like that only proves that troonix is so fucking useless on the desktop for average human being that it needs entire world to introduce artificial blocks on modern software to try and make it look like its on par with 20+ years old windows releases.

again, freetroon. Troonix being open sauce does not make it more independent. Software is no longer maintainable by enthusiasts since last 3 decades or so, therefore whenever redhat, cannonical or other big corporation (including microsoft) wants to do something sketchy with troonix, it happens, because you have no way to stop them. They pay for the development on linux and therefore have a lot to say about its directions. You are not going to fork troonix kernel and all other open sauce software to make your own, usable OS, because you simply have no resources for that, unless you plan to create yet another abomination like gnu hurd.

Haven't needed to reformat & reuse most of them, so they're just gathering dust with old Win7 installs until I do think of a better use. I estimate I'll probably boot my last Win7 system between 3 & 5 years from now, but nothing on any of them is actually broken at this point for anything I'm doing. Did the same thing circa 2015/2017-ish with WinXP. I miss how comfy, stable, lean, & simple they run on solid, well-maintained if slightly aged hardware, but it's a time & energy issue with me. Then download those dependencies through their respective .rpm or .deb or .run installers. Never mind that offline installers on Windows make you download ffmpeg and lame (and whatever other dependencies they want) yourself, separately, even if you have an internet connection.
>NES games are not nearly as relevant as windows productivity software
Anything you can still run on Windows 7 works on wine, so what is your argument? You're clearly not using Windows 10/11 exclusive software to begin with. I'd like to know what productive work you are still doing on Windows 7 because I'm certain those exact programs will work.

If your hardware is compatible (ie your CPU was made after 2013) then CachyOS is just the best Arch-based distro, and perhaps the best distro period. I use Fedora on my main PC, but I've used CachyOS and even I'll admit that it has 99% perfect noob onboarding aside from not having pamac preinstalled—and even that can be installed through CachyOS's own GUI tools. The only reason I use Fedora instead of CachyOS is because I can put a Windows 7 theme on Discover (the software centre on Fedora KDE), but not on pamac lol.
>getting it to work requires hackerman powers
Linux in 2025 genuinely requires no hackerman bullshit or terminal usage provided you pick a decent distro; Mint isn't one of those distros. I'll concede on the first one, good to see some DE incorporated such a common-sense features after the shitfest in had to go through in trying to remove SSID information from distros running xfce.
Second one is not really what I was thinking of, even Windows has these quick "power profiles". I was referencing Processor Power Management in CP's Advanced Settings which lets you permanently disable TB regardless of the power state, but your example is good enough.

Now Gimp 2.8 I'm curious about - I've never been able to install and run it since 2.10 became bundled with Ubuntu-based and Debian-based distros. How the heck did you run that? And please don't say Wine.

>Are you going to name any of these programs that work on Windows 7 but not Linux?

iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Support come to mind - I've seen older versions of iTunes work but the AMDS component to interface with iOS doesn't. Well, you do get libmobiledevice on Linux so at least there's that. But iTunes is irreplaceable for music metadata management.

Camtasia is another one, and so is Filmora (video editors in general).

IMGBurn is another one, I've never been able to find a better optical-media management program.

JDownloader2 (after debloating) is the only download manager with proxy *AND* download speed throttling I've been able to find.

And finally, Image Composite Editors is the undisputed king of stitching together satellite imagery and it's a Microsoft tool if you can believe that.

>For me, Linux has been a drop-in replacement for Windows

Which is fine, but it's ridiculous to suggest everyone will have the same experience. Case in point- I'm responding to you. Well, ok, you DID change my mind on a few points.

There's also a feature I forgot earlier, FDE *after* the OS install a'la Bitlocker.

Can literally only happen if you just plug your PC right into the wall outlet or you've port forwarded a bunch of ports on a vulnerable machine running vulnerable software. It's literally a low IQ reddit wives tale that for some reason all you low IQ idiots think is true.

Yes that's what I'm telling if Linux is exclusively used by trannies in your mind. I shit you not, see for yourself: https://w3techs.com/technologies/overview/operating_system

Also Ubuntu Server is even more popular than RHEL today and Windows used to have 20% market share two years ago, and now it has 10% and it's shrinking. Note that some Unix-like are unknown, but probably Linux. Some companies hide which OS it is but it's safe to say it's probably Linux unless explicily BSD, Solaris, HPUX, etc.

Windows has not been popular in servers for years. It's mostly used in workgroups or very specific cases. There's no pointing in fighting this trend, Windows is not a good OS for servers. Too much bloat, attack vectors and complicated unpredictable update system make it a poor choice.

I don't give a single fuck about your opinion: https://w3techs.com/technologies/overview/operating_system

This is the hard cold fact that you don't want to believe, 90% of web servers are Unix, with a very high probability of being Linux, period. I don't care about your personal friends experience or servers, that is the fact, that is worldwide. USA in fact is heavily cloud based and no cloud is running Windows, period. This is not debatable. Not even Azure runs Windows and that's a Microsoft product.

If you want to know why windows declined to 10% it's because Linux has containers, atomic upgrades, immutable distros, less attack vectors, better Linux only tools, and it's cheaper to maintain.

If you want to believe your fantasy, be yourself. It's not true and windows is declining further down. You can see that in that site as well. It used to have 20% market share now it has 10% and going down.

Linux users are chads, they have a system that they like, and they can run it on a brand new computer because they're not relegated to old shit, I know that feel because I had an FX-8350 that I was happy with, but you had 65w CPUs coming out in 2018 and destroying my computer's performance, and I had such a hardon for 7 that I just stuck with that I had instead of just biting the bullet, skipping right over 10 because it's ass and going straight to Linux and living the good life on a much cooler running, faster computer, I stayed with ancient hardware.
