SN7100 (Gen 4) vs SN8100 (Gen 5) if I care about battery life

8100 is more efficient at peak but not sure which is better during regular use

Would 8100 draw less power than 7100 at the same speeds?

Hello, ESL man from spain here.

I am currently using the pc for work (.NET legacy code mainly)

I was thinking in buying a SSD for alternative OS boot (havent decided the distro yet) and escape the hellscape that developing for .NET and windows 11 is becoming in my country.

Is it worth it to buy a new SSD to keep both OS's isolated?

which mobo should I go for?
b850 mag tomahawk or b850 aorus elite?
the mag tomahawk does have better headers and 2 usb3.2 headers (im gonna use the corsair frame 5000d and it would use both headers)
but the aorus elite does look nicer and has a better heatsink for the arm but doesn't have as many headers

are there any other boards with 2 usb3.2 headers?
also when I look up known issues the tomahawk seems to have more of them and seems more unstable but I couldnt find anything conclusive regarding that

If you need the drive to have the lowest latency, get the SN8100.

>like pixel refreshes and all that.
why do you think I've been sperging out about bad implementations about pixel refreshes for several months?
it's a solved problem and a non issue that should be invisible to the user and automatically done when the display is turned off, however due to retardation in the monitor manufacturer space, they some how interpreted this as the samsung/lg spec being it NEEDS to be ran at a 16 hour interval minimum, which then they implemented a FORCED pixel refresh at when the accumulated time has been reached, if a pixel refresh has not been triggered before then, this introduced even more problems due to shit like the timer running when the monitor is idle off - meaning it might run after 1 hour when the monitor is on, other things like that, and as such might trigger in a competitive match or some shit like this, as reported indefinitely on leddit and many places
corpo dick suckers will say this is not a problem and will defend their post purchase rationalization, techtubers will refuse to answer this due to sponsorships
to know that I am right about this you can look no further than to see that MSI had to back pedal to increase the timer to 24 hours, however this should not even exist
TVs already solved this before monitors
mobile phones with oleds don't behave like this
laptops don't behave like this (afaik)
no device behaves like this
it's a solved problem and you are safu if you just buy a non retarded display implementation, many are retarded however

those people are retards, even if you were doing a YouTube video of your building experience or checking all the manuals as you are building, it would be like 6-8 hours max (and im overshooting the estimate), or if you really just wanna take a lot of breaks it would be 3 days at worst
just shut your kids and pets out of the garage, clean it completely the day before and build the damn pc, if you want to be more prepared then watch tutorials and read all your components manuals beforehand
im saying this because even with 3k, you'd be spending between 500 to 1000 extra for the service fee when you could maximize the value and strength of your components by doing it yourself
at the end of the day, its your money anon, do with it what you want and think its best

You're going to be waiting until early next year at minimum, if you're not in drastic need of a new gpu you might as well wait until next gen. Will be a better generation than blackwell.
Same with am4, might as well wait for new sockets before an upgrade at this point.

Getting pretty late around here, so dunno how much I can assist rn. Still, here are some things to consider.
> display
What size, resolution, and hz do you want?
Resolution also implies an aspect ratio. 16:10 is often a good choice, being very close to 16:9 for content consumption, but also slightly taller to benefit browsing/office stuff/programming.
Then there's display type. IPS might be better for programming/browsing/other text things, OLED is usually superior for gaming & content consumption.
Might also wanna think about glossy/non-glossy panels, as well as color accuracy.
Lastly, do you envision yourself connecting it to an external monitor much of the time? If so, the laptop display may matter less, being only used as a secondary screen.
> budget
How much are you looking to spend, roughly?
Obvs, if you find a cheaper machine that would work well, you can always spend less. If your employer is paying for it tho, might as well get as much machine as you can.
> battery life & bulk
Are you gonna plug it in most of the time, or will using it on battery be a common occurrence?
Will you be lugging it around a lot, or just between rooms of the same place, or else just between home and work?
> programing, remote work
How heavy are these? If it's just medium-intensity compiling and office work, you probs won't need a recent high-end 45w CPU or whatever.
On the other hand, if you're frequently compiling Chromium, or handling hueg spreadsheets, a stronger CPU might be helpful.

Not many glossy WOLEDs at that price range, look for discounted QD-OLED monitors (240/360Hz).
Alienware AW2725D is probably the better $500~600 QD-OLED monitor.
Samsung G61SD 240Hz is an alternative; MSI appears to have a lot of 240Hz QD-OLED monitors near $500 but MSI has the stricter panel protection routines (can't disable pixel shift and other quirks).

If you're okay with matte WOLED, wait for the new Gigabyte monitor.

things that would've made my life easier: not mounting the top exhaust fan until after plugging in the cpu power connector, that top left spot was so insanely tight, same with the cpu_fan connector that was so damn near the thermalright fans, also HOLYYY i think i used 2 hours just to get the motherboard inside, tried it with 3 different screw sets until i found the correct ones, tightening 8 different ones one by one, then some wouldnt tighten so had to take them all out to recheck if that one spot was bad or wtf it was, if i tightened too much it would just get too lose again, chatgpt said it was normal for motherboard screws to be like that. then after not getting anywhere when the screws was too lose i started checking the other screw packs that came with the case, the 3rd pack was superdamn easy to tighten and wouldnt 'reset' if i went too hard.

left to do:
front panel wiring, usb wiring, audio wiring and 5x fans + rgb

Not Gigglebit, which likes (repeatedly) "revising" mobos to use lower-priced components, without really changing the name.
Otherwise, pick your poison:
Asus has nice BIOS, but tends to cost more than others. (Except maybe at the high end, which tends to cost you regardless of vendor)
ASRock tends to offer a little more hardware than others, but BIOS feels somewhat amateur-ish.
MSI is somewhere in between the other two. Sometimes, they also offer a vast array of (slightly) different boards.

Even the cheapest worst OLED is better than the best LCD at any price. Compared to the VA-based AOCs, they have much wider viewing angles (no color/brightness shift when viewed off-center), better blacks/shadow detail without any blooming since they are emissive displays that don't require dimming zones, perfect motion response (no dark smearing) and don't have any pixel overshoot for clearer images, and much better color gamut & saturation.

If you want until November Black Friday I expect there will probably be sales in $400-450 range.

That game only runs nicely if the monitor refresh rate and FPS perfectly matches + vsync. This causes fuckhuge input lag, but at least it looks nice. Now shit's just getting untenable for most modern games, and it's probably any combination of most of my hardware besides the GPU, so I may as well get a total computer refresh too.
Yet shit just escalates up to the better part of $1.1k just considering an RX 9060 XT, R5 9600X and all the other standard components. If I actually wanted a "relatively" high end like a 9070 base, that shoots up fast. And it's probably not gonna get any better soon.

It's actually disgusting how reliant the game is on CPU when enemy and NPC AI isn't even very complex, it's just seemingly processing a lot of shit like the destructible terrain and particles and masses of hell going everywhere. I dunno if volumetric fog affected by dynamic lighting is supposed to be GPU or CPU, but the sheer density doesn't help that either. Other things are probably also holding me back like no gaming SSD, just a HDD, but that game is just inexplicably taxing that even top of the line PCs are getting performance problems nowadays due to increasingly bad optimization.

AMD will give you better power and thermals overall and the 9060 by itself (XT and/or 16GB recommended) can clear that hurdle with grace outside of very specific NVIDIA focused titles (Black Myth Wukong) or attempting raytracing. At least, if 60 FPS is your minimum target. NVIDIA is just price inflated and kinda either inept for what their range is around that by comparison, or gross overkill for 1080p. If you're all about that DLSS and RTX then yeah, whatever, Nvid, but value for dollar that only really starts coming into play at 1440p up for the conflict.
I'd say the Intel GPU line isn't terrible either for value to performance in that resolution bracket, but not really easy to recommend those, especially with NVIDIA potentially intruding on their stake now.

Fuck, I wanna buy one now just to have it before it gets phased out. If you haven't actually bought that GPU yet, the rule of thumb is spend roughly half your entire budget on it.

If this is strictly for gaming the 7800X3D is gonna give you more useful life than the 9700X because Zen 5% gains are fuck-all without VCache. See:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/MzMMnQ/thermalright-phantom-spirit-120-se-argb-6617-cfm-cpu-cooler-ps120se-argb

If you can't name specific applications that you already know will use all 64GB of RAM then you don't need it and 32GB is fine. Anyway significantly cheaper same-spec kits:
(64GB) https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/dnCZxr/silicon-power-xpower-zenith-gaming-64-gb-2-x-32-gb-ddr5-6000-cl30-memory-sp064gxlwu60afdg

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/mhWJ7P/gigabyte-x870-eagle-wifi7-atx-am5-motherboard-x870-eagle-wifi7

>SilverStone has introduced the FLP02, a full-tower case that blends 90s nostalgia with compatibility for modern high-end hardware. The chassis sports a distinctive beige color and has 5.25" bay covers that look like floppy disks reminiscent of computing's earlier days. The FLP02 fits today's largest graphics cards, with space for RTX 5090 models up to 386 mm long when you remove the front drive cage. For those who love liquid cooling, the case allows 360 mm radiators on top, plus 120 mm / 140 mm radiator mounts at the back.

>A key feature is the Turbo button on the front, which pushes all PWM fans to their highest speed. The built-in screen shows fan PWM duty cycles in real-time, while motherboard control enables precise temperature management. SilverStone also adds a special key lock for the power and reset buttons to boost security. The case works with motherboards from Mini-ITX to SSI-CEB and offers seven expansion slots plus two more. You can store drives in three external 5.25" bays and several internal mounts. CPU coolers up to 182 mm tall fit inside, and there's room for PSUs as long as 250 mm. Front connectivity includes USB Type-C, dual USB 3.0 ports, and combo audio.

In the case of this motherboard, if you add an m.2 ssd to the 3rd expansion slot that wont stunt the GPU PCIe slot to run at X8 speeds instead of X16 correct? Because this has 3 m.2 slots but the first two are tied with the GPU PCIe. Am I understanding this correctly?
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X870E-AORUS-ELITE-WIFI7-rev-10-11/sp#sp

Additionally would it also be worth it to have the M.2 ssd in sharing the faster slot with the GPU for faster speeds if it means stunting the GPU from X8 to X16? Thinking of getting an RX 9070 XT for this.
Is that reducing in GPU speed even noticeable/worth it? Or equally is that improvement in ssd speeds noticeable/worth it?

Hell nope to both.
You would see low-single digit % drop if you had a 5090 and gimped it PCIE Gen 3.0 so what you do think any weaker GPU that is gimped far less than that would be like?
https://gamersnexus.net/gpus/nvidia-rtx-5090-pcie-50-vs-40-vs-30-x16-scaling-benchmarks
For SSDs the speed your system feels with them is mostly down to access latency and low queue-depth random read/writes by the OS/applications. Large sequential read/writes than can be affected by PCIe bandwidth aren't a concern unless you literally spend all day doing nothing but copy-pasta'ing Game ISOs/BDMVs.

I bought a USB-c -> DP cable just to test, might try the original DP-DP cable but with a DP female->uSB-c adapter, but the result will most likely be the exact same

now I test adapter dp female -> usbc with original dp cable male-male from box, instantly start working on cheapest adapter with just 4k 60hz "spec"
a cheapo dp -> usb-c cable I tried first of all ages ago did not even give me a signal for the display

last time bought a flawed display from the start and it had an annoying desync issue it's entire life, living with annoying things are pretty annoying

The random black screening is a deal breaker, IDK why you've kept it so long.
Return that buggy asap;

Looks like an issues that many users report being addressed in a firmware Samsung pushed out:
https://old.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/comments/1ldhstj/samsung_g80sd_oled_g8_13301_firmware_whats_new/
Apparently up to ver 1332 now, so what version is your dispaly on (should be able to check in the OSD)

I mean the smaller display and more pixels the less problems you see

The black screening thing is that it's consistently every 12-15minutes from starting which is kinda weird
after that it runs
atleast I have not seen anything after that but I might have missed things or not
>IDK why you've kept it so long.
it was cheaper and I had to try it out
