Taking all of Apple's durability claims together would imply it's become like 10x more durable over the years. But EVERY scratch test across ALL TIME shows nearly the SAME results. And every iPhone I have owned has a scratched screen.

>ceramic shield starts scratching at level 6 and gets worse at level 7

No one said otherwise.

As for the aluminium, AI slop tells me that while the oxide is mohs 9, anodising is thicker but softer, anywhere from mohs 4-6, which would explain the very deep scratch with quartz.

>>106635434
the later iphones do much better with mohs 6 picks in jerryrigeverythings tests than the earlier ones

I work around a lot of rocks (frequently quartz and harder) and I've basically given up trying to stop my phone screen from scratching. I want to get a sapphire screen protector but on amazon AU they're expensive and have poor reviews with people complaining they shatter extremely easily.

Kind of bullshit when they claim major improvements every year.

>I want to get a sapphire screen protector but on amazon AU they're expensive and have poor reviews with people complaining they shatter extremely easily.
If you compare just 2 simple sheets of material, there's a simple law:
- Either it scratches easily
- Or it shatters easily
That's because, the harder something is, the worse it is at dissipating energy.
If you drop something soft, like plastic, then it will simply wobble and flex around, instead of shattering. But soft materials scratch easy.
If you drop something hard, like ceramic, then either it will bounce and make loud as fuck noises without damage (the energy gets redirected into the bounce and vibration/sound here), or it will fucking explode into a thousand pieces and redirect its energy that way instead.

Or you go the middle ground, where things have a medium resistance to scratches and medium resistance to shattering.
So yeah make your pick, do you want high scratch resistance that shatters easily, or high shatter resistance that scratches easily.

Then you need:
- High hardness screen (protector) to protect against scratches
- Soft cushioning to absorb impact energy
You can do this by combining a hard screen with one of those thick and soft rugged cases.
The thicker and softer the case, the better it is at absorbing impact energy, and the less impact energy gets transferred to the screen (which prevents shatter)

That's how sapphire works, it's really scratch resistant, but it shatters really easily, you're trading one for the other with that.
You could watch any sapphire glass watch review that tests the durability and you'd find that if you drop them, it will shatter very easily, that's why gshocks use mineral glass.

People who buy phones as a fashion accessory rather than for use case and desired form factor dimensions are nut cases and or pathetic. So it makes sense that half the of iToddlers who own these things get genuinely over a few cosmetic blemishes that were bound to pop up eventually. Notice how Android users don't typically have this particular mental illness.

Air gang rise up
I ordered the air because I don’t need over9000 cameras that can shoot RAW 4k 240fps at 144hz eating up 2gb of storage per minute and I knew apple would make it as strong as they could because autists would go out trying to bend it on purpose to have fake outrage. Now as for the battery id say its last gen level of good, with it being so thin I’m curious how fast its going to degrade but as long as it lasts 3-4 years idk, I’ll buy whatever new techslop is out at that point
I’ve already got 2 wireless battery packs from my last phone (because all cellphone batteries turn to shit after a year of hard use) so I don’t need a fancy super slim apple air one

tl;dr
unless you need max battery life or fancy cameras to be a social media “influencer” or TikTok dancer the air was the right choice to get, enjoy your 2lb brick

it really is. People avoid it thinking it's the "form over function" phone not realizing that function doesn't start and end with cameras. It's a smartphone. Way better one-handed than a thick phone with the same screen size. Works way better in the pocket if it's something loose like basketball shorts or some sweatpants. Much more durable than just about any other phone, so it's reasonable to go caseless. Battery life is great. It's extremely functional.

hate apple all you want but them being a closed system allows them control their hardware and software. Android has to cater to poorfags buying $200 shitbox phones and $1k “premium” phones. It’s just a more polished version of shit
Then you have political shit throwing banning and limiting phones from both sides of the pond. USA (and its puppets) doesn’t like Huawei because (muh commie gutter oil spyware) and china doesn’t like western phones (because muh capitalist pig dog spyware)
Apple can’t even sell the air in Chyna because (muh eSIM capitalist pig dogs might let them bypass your great firewall)

tl;dr
it’s all shit, pick your flavor but android has and will always suck because you have 30 manufacturers building junk shit with a shit App Store and developers trying to write code and apps that will work on a $200 phone and a $1k flagship phone. Just doesn’t happen easily, with apple they have 1 standard and hardware. When it’s deemed obsolete it’s no longer supported and basically a fuck you deal with it, upgrade peasant

It’s the new hotness of manufacturing and production of goods with corporate buzzwords. I mean apple has been saying “designed in California assembled in china” for like 20 years now
But I know you have zoomer TikTok brainrot so let me try and explain in your lingo
It was made in Chyna, some might say the best child labors. I think I could assemble it better, here with the best and the cheapest of illegal labor. We’ve removed the nets from the factory so anyone who can’t tolerate the 16hr work days 6 days a week I say, *inhauls violently, purched lips* I say let them fly. We’re gonna let them fly, gracefully I might add. And we’re gonna rebuild again with a more vibrant and youthful workforce, we’re gonna rebuild and we’re gonna do it with skilled American union workers with big beautiful nets. I know a thing or two about buildings by the way. But we’re going to rebuild, we’re going to build these devices here in America. The best America, south America what a shit hole. If I weren’t president they’d be building these phones in Brazil and shipping them into our country along with the rapists and the fentanyl. Nasty drug that is, almost as nasty as android

such a stupid thing that such an expensive phone is made of such a cheap and common material, but I guess npcs are still easily impressed by "metal"

Get the pro if you want top tier camera and battery and/or gaymen
The 17 is the best value
The air if you want lightweight and less bulk and flex on the poors for having the new thing. I mean you never know this could be the beginning how apple will make non pro phones going forward or it could be the X (10). They never made another stainless steel iPhone after the 10. They took the technology from it and put it into future and current iPhones but never made another phone like the X (10). The only reason I upgraded from the X to the 13 was because it didn’t have 5g
That being said. If I was paying full retail out of pocket price from my McGoy wagie job I’d get the 17. The current promotions and signing a 3 year installment plan with trade in for $0 I’d get the pro
I got the air because I’m not poor. My first iPhone was a 3gs 18 years ago? I don’t gaymen on mobile, I don’t care about autistic level camera specs and I don’t use my phone that much besides basic bitch shit. I wanted a non bulky not shit phone that can sit in my pocket for 10 hours a day and not be annoy me. If I’m doom scrolling and shit posting on a weeb basket weaving forum with fellow autists for 10 hours not needing a charge, this phone will do it. If I sperg out and decide I’d like to play age of empires for 6 hours without being hooked to a wall charger, this phone will do it. If I see something cool a want to take a 48mp picture of it in .8 seconds without having to pick between which 3 cameras do I want to use. Do I want to go macro for a close up in depth. A 1x for a natural 1:1 of what im seeing or a super focused center with a blurry backdrop looking like a professional photographer and adjusting shutter speeds and light capture on the sensor. Then no my air won’t do that and honestly I’d pull out my dusty old Sony aii dslr with a 200mm 12 inch

Since when does aluminium started flaking off in chunks?

it's probably just because of very thin and cheap anodization that's used for pretty colors vs. the thick kind meant as an engineering finish, used on weapons or machinery and can only come in a few colors

I also thought aircraft grade aluminium can't be made out of recycled aluminium? Did Apple invent a new form of reforging? Same goes for Grade 5 titanium for that matter.

That’s a aluminum peasant issue
Titanium 16 pro and air chads stay winning
They only made the X (10) with stainless steel for a year before dropping it
The 16 pro was the test bed for the air. If they continue the air forward they’d have to stick with titanium or go back to steel because you retards can’t help yourself from trying to bend it since you grew up with fidget spinners and need to keep your hands busy
>>106643968
They probably will because titanium is honestly a weird flex. Steel is the strongest metal on earth (besides diamond) and cheaper. Why they went the titanium route is weird besides saving a gram in weight

It's definitely more "premium", more expensive and harder to work with. Not the most practical metal but definitely cooler than stainless steel. If I was paying iphone prices then I wouldn't be easily impressed with the aluminum they still like to use so much but then I'm not some npc consoomer who thinks aluminum is expensive.

Titanium is tougher but is it worth it when 99% of people use cases anyway and the material itself presents heating issues that previous iPhone iterations didn't have?

anodized aluminum is only colored at a thin outermost layer of ~10-25 microns. A slight scratch cuts right through this. Aluminum is also pretty soft and malleable, especially compared to titanium and stainless steel. using aluminum is a huge step backwards for apple

Not him but he means by volume not by weight which is what most people thing about.

If you want to make the thinnest phone volume matters more than weight so titanium is indeed a "weird flex" and no doubt done purely for marketing reasons.

As for being the strongest (by volume) on earth?
I don't know but I think Plutonium might be stronger, but strongest of any readily available, affordable and non-radioactive metal you might actually consider for construction? I buy that.

I'm gonna upgrade my five year old samsung s20+ to an iphone 17 pro max. Not sure if I'm going to get blue or orange. I was thinking about orange, but I feel like it'll be a theft target since it stands out so much. Plus, I think the novelty of having a bright orange phone will wear out pretty quickly. I should've gotten the 16 last year since I like the design better
