South Korea's entire government "cloud" storage just got nuked. No back ups or copies. Dozens of Petabytes worth of national security level government storage gone permanently. Probably the worse cyber security incident over the last 50 years.

The system was probably designed incorrectly so creating a backup was impossible without taking it offline for a few days each time.
If so, then senior people definitely knew this and were given approval to continue without backups because a few days of downtime are "unacceptable" to ministers. Now they know that there are various degrees of unacceptability and that a few days of disruption is less bad than losing everything.

Anonymous No.106813729 [Report]

One ream is 500 sheets and thats about 2 or 3 inches tall. So you could reasonably stack around them to around 8000-10000 sheets.
That reduces the amount of space needed down a few hundred football fields.
And we could stack the paper higher too, and get a bigger building. A football field isnt that big in comparison to a storage warehouse.

You can buy 20tb hdds on amazon fot $350. You need 43 to backup 858tb so that's around 15k USD only.
You could even make it 100 drives times 5 for redundancy and it's only 175k.
I'm sure the poor South Korean economy cannot afford such a large sums of money so that's too bad.

Because a backup is supposed to be an offsite copy of your data, something stored separately from your main system.

RAID is used for redundancy in case one of your drives fails, but it all belongs to the same system and could potentially be corrupted by the same malware, for example. It could also all fail at the same time because of a voltage drop or power surge, and file corruption or accidentally deleting/overwriting files will affect the entire array too.

Basically, RAID is used mainly for uptime, when you cannot afford to have a critical system go down because of hardware failure, but it is not a backup.

You're so busy arguing about the semantics that you don't understand why nobody thinks such a thing is an acceptable form of backup. Like imagine you got called into school because your child tried to stab another child with a knife but you found out it was with a butterknife. Sure it's a knife by the strictest definition but the only jam it's going to get you out of is one in which you need to spread jam on toast.

The first thing you learn when you come to 4chan is that this is not a space for serious technical debates. This is a space for debating the definitions of words and terms. These debates are won by following terminology to the letter the way a lawyer would. The closer your interpretation of a term is to the strictest most pure meaning of it the more correct you are when you speak on things related to it. The goal is not to have a serious discussion amongst people knowledgeable about a topic. It's to try to own the other guy in a debate about semantics then announce that you "accept his concession" as if he's never seen this maneuver before. Everyone is really impressed with anybody who does this on 4chan. It's the mark of a respected poster.
