waiting for T470 & X270 prices tank once W10 is no longer supported
>>106812235
You think that'll be a thing?
X270 seems like an enticing upgrade from an x230. T480 even more so considering that it's libreboot compatible.
X280 would be the best replacement considering it has a similar small profile, but I don't believe that it's libreboot compatible, nor if any other newer models will ever get support. Even then, the T480 doesn't have full one-to-one functionality either, though I'm unsure how trivial the differences are.
I'm not *that* worried about glownigger spooks, but having a custom BIOS/UEFI is a nice thing to have.

I have a latitude myself and find them to be pretty damn nice, I was using mine specifically for work until I installed Linux so I can dualboot and I installed a mobile broadband card to make use of a spare phone line I had.

There's already patches for partial T460s and E470 support so other models from 2018 and earlier don't sound like much of a stretch. 2019 and later is a different story because of the newer, unbroken ME.

Wondering if I made a good choice.
I've used basically every ThinkPad since the 20 series.
My reasons for getting the X9 15 were: centered keyboard (numpad sucks dick), no trackpoint while retaining the clickpad, good battery life, high refresh display with good response times, etc.

Battery help?
I was using my t420 on battery and suddenly the laptop shut down. The laptop can't turn on if i don't put it on AC now. The battery still shows a charge percentage on the OS but when i plug in the charger the battery LED shows three green flashes and then one shorter orange flash and then it shows nothing (while it would usually continue to be either orange or green depending on charge).
Is this how thinkpad batteries die? The overall capacity was still at 78% of the design capacity. If it's really dead what's the brand i should look for a new one?

I haven't tried this, but i defintely will once i get good at soldering (the only soldering job i did is a 3000mAh lithium battery for my PSP)
we should definitely make some kind of wiki for diy batteries in general. Thinkpads aren't the only good laptops of the past, i have some business model HP as well that need some cells.

I don't think I've seen that one specifically but I did see quite a few of these. Much like your link, they mostly all focus on the battery cells themselves when that's kind of the easy part, if you can solder. The tricky part is the BMS.
From what I could get, some BMS have to be disconnected a certain way or else they blow a protective fuse you can't easily replace and some can lock down the battery and simply refuse to charge or discharge regardless of the cells condition. Info on each specific BMS for each specific laptop model is scarce and of course you can't buy replacement BMS, so the only way to have an original one on your "new" battery is already having one on your old battery.

I am currently running on my desktop computer:
Windows 7 without an antivirus or system updates newer than 2013 ( I am a power-user and consider that bloat)
AMD Athlon x4 860K
Nvidia GTX 1050ti
16 gigs of DDR3 RAM
I use this machine for, on the daily:
Small minimalist PHP Web development with Codium.exe, and XAMPP
Minecraft Alpha gaming and development (Eclipse IDE)
Team Fortress 2008 (not daily)
The majority of my workflow is done in a USB stick. The majority of my shit on my computer is not on the system disk.
The things that aren't on my portable drive are only in my system because they just aren't portable. Codecs, shell replacements, etc. XAMPP and f.lux which don't like USBs for some reason..
This results in a very light C drive footprint when this approach is applied to a fresh install of Windows.
People say it's "weak" or "underpowered", but I do everything I need without problems. I have Supermium and Pale Moon open with tens of tabs and I do not experience problems even with my pagefile disabled.
I express interest in the Thinkpad T480, but I own another laptop, the Precision 7520. I am dissatisfied with its strange Linux support, battery life, and weak keyboard, and I dislike the bloat Dell forces if you wish to install drivers.
T480 looks nice but also less bulky than the 7520 and thus less durable. Might have a better keyboard though given my 7520's E key fucking popped off for no reason whatsoever. Technically a hardware downgrade from the 7520, which had 32 gigs for some reason and 8 cores, but I use my desktop machine more than I use that laptop, so I am used to the "weak" hardware that is on this desktop. I do not need stronger hardware.
I like look of the T420 for what seems to be a bulkier form factor and heavier keyboard, but the hardware and battery life might actually be worse than my current desktop computer.
I think I am going to purchase the T480. What would I be in for for with my current setup?

I travel a lot, so I'm aiming for 13/14inch models.
I used to do graphics but my adobe subscription run out and decided to cancel it
bonus points for 2 SSD slots so I can dual boot windows
In terms of budget: I'm not sure if laptops in general can last more than 4 years so I don't want to spend too much, but if there's a good model Im perfectly fine with spending up to 2k dollars.
TLDR a machine that withstands normie life and allows me to do my computer hobbies

The keyboard is better without a doubt. I've never had a key on a ThinkPad keyboard just break from normal typing. Linux support is almost flawless (touchpad works worse than on Windows but I disable it anyway). Performance won't be much worse as both 7520 and T480 have 4-cores with SMT, not 8 cores afaik. What is definitely worse is the rigidity of the chassis.

A long time ago I had a T460s, the batteries sucked so I got "new" ones on ebay and put them in according to the lenovo instructions (disabled batteries in bios and so on). When I turned the laptop back on one of the batteries wouldn't charge (it would discharge fine) so I only had like 30% of the capacity it was supposed to be after that one ran out. So I figured, one of the batteries must be fake. I put the old batteries back in and the exact same problem appeared.
So what happened exactly?

If you want Windows 7 on the T480 you'll need to use some hacked up drivers. I think there's some Chinese driver for the integrated graphics that works from 7th gen to 10th gen intel. Might need to add USB3 or NVMe drivers to the installation ISO as well.
T430 or below would work with Win7 without needing to fuck around with drivers

Is this the good place to talk about U/SFF Desktop products (Lenovo ThinkCentre/HP EliteDesk/Dell OptiPlex)?
My use case is building a NAS. What I need primarily is tons of spinning rust on the order of ~ 4TiB. That's 1, maybe 2 3.5 HDDs worth. Shall I:
> Buy an SFF which has enough internal HDD bays for my use case and swallow the efficiency penalty
> Buy an USFF and use USB-SATA converters to attach spinnign rust
What I'm looking at is either a HP ProDesk 400G4 for β¬175 (8500T, 8 ram, 256 SSD) or a ThinkCentre M720Q fore β¬200 (8500T, 16 ram, 512 SSD).
At that price my Normal SFF option is a ProDesk 400 G5
My midi tover option is a Dell OptiPlex 7060

Is it true the USB-C charging port for Thinkpads starting from T480 and newer have a short life span that will effectively brick the laptop? I bought a refurbished L490 recently but I saw on Reddit just now that failing USB-C ports seem to be highly widespread, I'm starting to regret my purchase, thinking I should've bought a Dell Latitude 5420 instead.

If only they had the courage to get rid of the tapered edges and add 1-2 mm of thickness, they could bring back the SD slot and a fifth USB port and modular wifi. But somehow even the non-slim laptops all have to be as slim as possible.

I have like 6 thinkpads, the last 2 i had to replace because the keyboards fucked up. and you can't replace just the keyboard like on older ones you have to replace the whole top part which costs as much as a whole used thinkpad.
I didn't even notice much of a performance boost between my T420, T480 L490 and T14 but that's probably due to going from windows 8 to 11 plus pajeet code bloat.
I'd probably be fine still using the T480 with windows 10 if it still worked.

Don't think there are any with both, though you might not need a GPU with the integrated graphics of today's CPUs. The Yogas are usable until 2024 when they decided that having a slot for the pen is outdated and people should carry it (and a USB cable for charging it) separately instead.

Its a bit too big and heavy for my taste. I considered the X13, but I really wanted an ethernet port
The framework 12 looked promising, but it came out to be a huge disappointment
Still using the T14 as the X61 is just too old.
Every new thinkpad that comes out just removes the features that used to differentiate it from the rest.
Ethernet port, SD card slot and more USB A ports (at least 3) should be standard on the X13
Removable battery too.
Non soldered RAM too but everyone is way past that.

T480 has the oldest intel generation officially supported by windows 11, so the prices of it will not go down for this reason. Keep in mind that the CPUs aren't that much faster than something like a quadcore ivy bridge from the qm series, just a bit more power efficient. That laptop is definitely a nice package, but NOT fast by any means, it's basically like pimping a 13 year old laptop, just with a type c port and an option to put in an nvme drive (and be restricted by the bandwidth)

don't look for dedicated GPUs in thinkpads, in the era of thunderbolt and usb4 being prevalent, you can use an external one in an enclosure at home, and you're going to be good with a modern AMD APU, especially with it having unified memory, meaning that it's actually somewhat decent for GPGPU tasks if you can get it up and running, which is a bit of a pain

On 8th gen CPUs you can increase the power limits in Throttlestop to the same as for a quad-core ivybridge and get more performance that way.

I think so, it seems like a problem with the extra DRM added in the xx30 generation. The same thing happened to my T470 with its fake battery (empty icon, error on boot) and connecting the battery to a T510 for a few seconds made it work again.

I have an HP ProBook 640 G1, I got the stupidest issue, it turns itself on every time I shut it down. I started plugging out the battery so it doesn't stay on for no reason while not in use. I had the thing since 2018 or something, it started doing this about 6 months ago when I switched it from Winblows to Linux. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but putting it out there.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm assuming the power button might have derped in the meantime, but I'd like some other opinions before I start tearing into the laptop.

Soldered RAM is good though. It's basically a must for high speeds due to signal integrity constraints.
Considering integrated graphics and people wanting to do things like inference on their laptops, memory bandwidth is quite crucial, so it makes sense to just buy the maxed out version of the motherboard and go from there.

Yea to add insult to injury even on the systems with "wifi slot" (desktop motherboards and some workstation laptops) intel merely copied M.2 form-factor for their proprietary CNVio slot that just separates analog part of wifi from digital to cut cost and isolate emi.
AX210 - real wifi for real PCIe slots on AMD or old intel systems.
AX211 - analog part of CNVio wifi system that's only compatible with certain specific generations of intel chipsets and CPUs.

Any suggestions on a ebay special P series Thinkpad I could use as a cad slave? Mostly just doing simple parts in solidworks (it's what he uses) to run on a buddy's 3axis machine. Would be nice to be able to haul it over to his place or I'd just use my desktop. Most of the results I get are for 11th gen I7's with a T500 quadro which should be fine performance wise. Tx10 through Tx30 had ugly screens across the board while the ones before and after these had nice ones as an option. I loved the 1680x1050 screen on my old T500, shame that its hinges had to break.

This laptop has already 32 GB of RAM, which is 4 times as much as my desktop PC which I'm using right now. Even though it's an old computer, the price actually is low compared to the other machines in the same website: the other units are in better conditions, but I wonder why this one in particular is this cheap. Hopefully its battery is in a decent state, but I wish I could check the battery condition from the website.

you're confusing cnvi with pcie cards. ax210 has the phy and radio on one module. ax211 is the cnvio variant with the phy in the chipset and the radio on the module. what i'm complaining about is, regardless of if it's a cnvi or pcie card, dell will solder down a m.2 1216 module on the motherboard so you couldn't upgrade it even if you wanted to. if cnvi, this isn't really a big deal because you weren't gonna be able to swap it anyway, but if the radio goes bad you're looking at a system board replacement.
i guess i just really hate laptops that are SBCs with a screen and a keyboard tacked on.

I've this issue with the screen on my T430 where it had vertical lines then eventuially lead to the image distorting in waves and eventually just becomes white and takes over the whole screen until it becomes unusable (as seen in pic). The computer still works perfectly if connected to a monitor. I tried to see if it was the connection but that wasn't it (also no burnt connectors or anything of the sort). Putting pressure on the screen did manipulate the amount of vertical lines, and it was still present in the bios which tells me that it's a hardware not a software issue.
Would a screen replacement help fix this issue or could the connetor/connection to the motherboard be the issue? If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated; thanks!

you can't put classic T420 keyboard on T440p, otherwise it's a pretty damn good machine. Removing the backcover is piss easy and you don't need to remove the keyboard to install ram/cpu/ssd. Personally it's my favorite T series pads, just remember to replace the clunkpad and screen.
If I could put 11th gen intel on that thing, I'd daily drive T440p for another 6 years.

The connector is the same for all T-series rear batteries from around 2006 to 2018 but the battery shapes are different and won't fit usably or at all into different models.
Older models will charge batteries from newer models, e.g. T60 happily charges any T480 rear battery. In the other direction:
- T430 and later won't charge T420 and earlier batteries
- T470 and later charge most batteries from T440 through T460 (I've seen just one so far that a T460 would charge but a T470 wouldn't)
Not sure if there was a break between T430 and T440 and I don't have a T430 battery at hand to check right now.
T460s/T470s front batteries have the same connector as all the rear batteries but use a different protocol (the same one as T470/T480 front batteries) so they won't charge or even report any data when you connect them to the rear slot.

Who are you quoting? <3
As of now the most powerful corebootable models are T480/T480s which are quite a downgrade from what you have. CPU performance per core is close to X1E G1-G3 but they have only 4 cores rather than 6 or 8. Part availability isn't too rosy for these either. T480 keyboards were basically a one-off and so were T480s batteries. They also don't have a modular power jack unlike your X1E.
Both T480 and T480s have a gimped Thunderbolt port with half the usual bandwidth (PCIe 3 x2 instead of x4), and the models with an onboard discrete GPU aren't very future-proof since the GPU takes so much of the thermal budget. I'm not much of a GPU user so I can't say how problematic the Thunderbolt bandwidth is.
T430 and T440p have 1/4 of the max RAM and 1/2 of the max eGPU bandwith of the T480(s) but fill other niches such as storagemaxxing, key travel and chassis strength.

Depends on what gaming you are doing, retard. If all you want to "game" is old games like half life and whatever, then anything Sandybridge and newer will be fine. Otherwise, look for the one with either a reasonably powerful dedicated GPU, or one with a working and non-fried Thunderbolt port for you to add an eGPU.
