4Chan /g usenet group Thread!
Welcome to the 4Chan /g usenet group Thread!

>What is /usenet/?

Open standard protocols still exist and are what the internet was built on
(http, irc, rss, ftp, etc). TNot owned by corpos, not under
govt control, and are accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
They simply exist to be built upon and enjoyed
by all.

Some, like FTP are outdated and insecure. Others, like rss, irc, http,
usenet are still glorious and wonderful open standards .
Join us and discuss such topics on one such protocol:
NNTP, aka usenet.

>WTF IS USENET
Literally it means the Users Network. It’s an open
protocol for posting and reading messages, organized by newsgroups. It's entirely decentralized, no single server, mpossible to take down.

Today it is split between, binaries and text. The
binaries part is what it’s known for today: piracy. The text part is forgotten and abandoned, until now.

>WHY POST ON USENET
Its open protocol, you can use any client you want or
build you own. No costs, no subscriptions, no money. You can sign up through your ISP, or through eternal-september.org. Then you just need to install a client.

>THIS IS OLDER THAN MY DAD. WHY TF WOULD I DO THIS?

Because its is comfy.
Because it’s decentralized. Because instead of feeding some corpo ai
bullshit like discord or whatever, you can have a conversation with like
minded anons in an uncensored, decentralized, and fun hackerman way.

>DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING?
No, you can use the aforementioned eternal-september.org with any client of your choice, or use the service of newsgrouper.org to access freely online (register to post)

>OK I’M IN - WHERE DO I POST!
Join us at alt.cyberpunk.tech

WHAT CLIENT SHOULD I USE?
>Pan (gnome newsreader - Multiplat)
>Seamonkey
>Gnus for GNU Emacs
>Mozilla Thunderbird

>want to take a peek?

Online Based service @ newsgrouper.org is free and allows to post when registered. Also it can be used in any browser, even on android!

Can I not access usegroups without having to use a service like eternal-september.org? It seems like most of the other services are paid. How is this a good thing?

Check newsgrouper.org to just browse, or register to browse and post in your browser.

You aren't giving personal info to anybody. Just an email account will do, and for that you can use any email service you want.
Just don't use your real name or any real emails and nobody knows shit about you. The server might have your IP address, so if you're really worried use a VPN.
Anyways, yes, you need to create an account with a newshost so that you can get feeds as well as post to them.

I have heard about Usenet forever, including via IRC channels, but nobody ever really explained it like OP (thank you), though the instructions still remain a bit too obtuse. I'm glad the OP was useful.

A news provider simply allows you to read and post on newsgroups, in a way like a mail provider allows you to check and send mails.

There's a few few ones mentioned that allow that for free.

There's also those for pay that allow you to post and download binaries, but unless you are looking for piracy, they have no usecase.

Think of it like an indexer. You can't get what groups and posts to those groups exists without an index of those groups.
So you have to connect to some sort of newshost to pull them. Whether that's Eternal September or Chivanet or whatever. And if you want to post to those groups you need an account to process that post.
However, there are totally free and accountless newsreader sources you can use if you just want to read. For instance Narkive: https://alt.cyberpunk.tech.narkive.com/
This can read and show the current newsgroup we've been posting to. You can't post via this, but you can read it.

So it's not a website you're using. You only used Eternal September to sign up. You need the equivalent of something like what Outlook does for emails (and IRC clients for IRC, etc), except now you need a client for newsgroups. So, from the OP:
>You can sign up through ... eternal-september.org. >Then you just need to install a client.
Then you input the relevant info into the client and you're off to the races.

or I guess Newsgrouper.org instead of client, but I didn't do that

Your newsreader client will download everyting in every subscribed newsgroup that exists in the spool of that server. For capacity reasons, old articles are deleted, though retention time is far longer than in here.

Felt the same way. It feels like home. A warm sensation of technology used for good, without layers and layers of deceit on top of it.

Messaging boards should have never deviated from this.

The way threads are displayed all in a list is so much better than having one random post after the next based on if the algorithm was on it's period that day (twitter and other shitty user interfaces like those)

Reminds me of the old vBulletin boards.

How we went from this to the cancer that is instagram just shows how shitty modern society is.

You might be surprised to find some site or service you use regularly, actually has an IRC channel already. And do not underestimate the value of being a trendsetter; set your quit message to your own server/channel, and bring it up in relevant convos. You can populate your own channel relatively quickly, if it has a personality and legs. But if you have nothing, obviously nobody will keep coming.

You can whois people to see their other channels. And even just talk to people for recommendations. You can also manually see every channel that exists on a server with /list, and I think even sort them based on user amount.

For finding channels, I found many via simply searching online for topic+IRC channel. Using search engines besides The Big One helps. There was a kind-of exodus many years ago, and many people switched from Rizon (I think?) to Libera or others, so seeking defunct Rizon channels on Libera (or others) often yields results.

In being introduced to Usenet here for the first time, I have been thinking how: I actually don't want to talk in an echo chamber of like-minded old-fogie peers. I like being surprised and challenged by new perspectives, it keeps the mind sharp. I personally don't get really worked up over mole hills which others seem to make into mountains. To me, being exposed to new things is more valuable than being put off by minor differences. Usually if somebody isn't solely a smartphone drone, and are cool enough to use something like IRC or usenet etc, they are already a cool person. The rest are naturally filtered, as has been noted, and will just keep squeaking into their preschool toy walled garden echo chambers.

Firs off, the volume of people is close to insignificant. Secondly, a collection of ASD does not a good customer base make, rather this can be dangerous. Even back in the day, people calle din the utilities to have stuff disconnected - on behalf of the spammers.

Official documentation: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/creating-newsgroup-account

Or ask ChatGPT. You need to make an account at eternal september before

Step 1: Read the official documentation i linked.
Step 2: Try what the documentation says, using the account information that you created and the eternal september server

We need media that the neighborhood burghers can rely on. The Roman church is going to overwhelm that place as soon as they catch wind of culture brewing

I think you'd have to set up your own server to get the group going and if you wanted anons posting from e.g. Eternal September you'd have to find the admin and ask him to add you to his list of peers, otherwise everybody would have to go straight to you over the internet.

OP, I worry about the quality of users you are attracting by making threads here. It will be interesting to see if Usenet will get infected by the same elements present here.

The great thing about usenet is that the setup is trivial but just complicated enough to filter schizos like these.
Anonymous No.106882902 [Report] >>106883430 >>106883603
> Over time, the original, truly decentralized model of Usenet evolved. It became difficult to maintain a consistent, high-quality network with so many independent servers. Commercial entities stepped in to create "backbone" servers. These are incredibly powerful, interconnected servers that hold the majority of Usenet content and handle the bulk of the traffic.

> These backbone servers are not open to the public. The companies that run them restrict access. They require authentication and charge for the service.

A re-centralized protocol? No thanks

OP here. Not worried, these people are too stupid to get in and even if a smarter guy helped that idiot he could at most post subs bullshit and be filtered by users.

That's talking about binary servers, which need to transfer hundreds of terabytes every day.
Text-only servers don't have this issue.
