How open source gets "political" is when you decide to run a project like you would 15 years ago. You decide to start a project or fork one and generally accept valuable contributions from anyone.
This is political because you are letting contributions from anyone, including undesirable people when the "correct" thing to do is to adopt some sort of code of conduct to drive these people away from your project regardless of code quality.
How people are driven out is through the same people who seek to control your project. By adopting some sort of code of conduct you give them the green light to make light of the undesirables and because you adopted a CoC it's up to you to uphold it.
Failure to uphold your CoC or failure to adopt one as a large project and suddenly your background, your politics or anything you say will be heavily scrutinized in order to discredit you and your project/fork.
