The memory and SSD are integrated into the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. It's why Apple recommends making sure you adjust for your needs at the time of purchase.

And it'll cost you $200 to upgrade to 512Gb, but you can't do that with the discount model from the store, you have to buy direct from Apple so it's $999 not $799, so that's an additional $400 to get a piddly little 512Gb SSD.

In 2 years you will have paid $400/yr for 16gb ram and 256gb storage. Pretty shitty, 2 years from now low end tablets will have that.
You need to buy something that will last into the future which means overpaying up front without knowing how much you'll need. That's why some people pay out the ass for 64gb ram thinking they'll need it in 5 years but end up not needing it. Likewise some buy 16gb of ram but find out it's not enough and have to sell for a loss and upgrade again.
You can't even follow trends because apple will make the next macos upgrade take more ram if they think it will incentivize you 16gb ram buyers to upgrade early. Apple owning your hardware and software gives you 0 power as the consumer.

How much more important is ram over the cpu improvements when it comes to apple laptops?
Anonymous No.106843920 [Report]
>>106843830
It depends on the usecase. Browsers eat up ram like crazy so 16gb won't go very far. I think Apple cpus are quite good but the lack of cooling means its gonna throttle to basically nothing pretty quick. In 2-3 years when a fucking webpage takes 10% cpu to run your base spec mac is gonna chug along and thermal throttle constantly.
Also lower end cpus limit how many external displays you can run. I think only pro and up cpus let you run three monitors including the internal display.
Their online mac builder tool also makes arbitrary limits on what ram you can pair with what cpu. You play their little pick and choose game until you realize your perfect mac is over double what you originally wanted to spend because you were forced to move up a tier to the pro lineup and only the 32 core gpu lets you have 32gb ram. It's fucking retarded.

Most annoying is storage cause it's already so cheap and easy to just put in 1 TB. It's definitely designed to bait you into getting upsold. And yet it's a pain in the ass to use a separate drive.
