I started using Linux as main OS more than 15 years ago. Initially, I only used it because of tools like gparted in live distros, then was curious what else it could do. Turns out, once you leave the idea behind that you absolutely, positively need that one specific Windows software and start exploring, you'll find a whole new world of interesting and useful stuff. Even better: most of that new and interesting stuff is available on Windows, too - so once you switch your entire workflow over to free software, it doesn't matter anymore which OS you're using - might as well fully switch over to a Linux distro that you're comfortable with. For me, that's Linux Mint.

literal troon distro doe, it has a 50% chance of a mass suicide happening (in their distro chatrooms as they don't even have a office) where they ship a update that wipes all your drives and uploads all your private data to some troon site. i cant treat anyone seriously who leaves their biggest social media presence that can get eyes on their project and get them sponsors or donations like xitter, just to own the chuds. they're like every linux project beyond the main linux kernel a security risk at any point that could do something incredibly mentally ill or dangerous, these people are deeply damaged and unstable, trusting them with access to your PC is beyond mentally ill.

Not really, when you use linux, you are no longer using your computer to get specific stuff done, you are at that point using linux to get linux programs to get stuff done on linux. Everything you do from that point onwards will no longer be simple user centered computing where you do things nonchalantly and everything just werks, no your entire workflow and everything will be centered around your troonix distro, every time you want to get any new software or hardware, you can't be a unbothered aryan just adding it and going on with your day, you have to be a pent up leaking troon that checks first how to install it, whether it works, whether you're safe to buy it and whether it supports troonix and your distro specifically.

W10 is dead and after trying W11 i didn't feel like it's a something that you can work with even after applying everything to turn off telemetry, AI and other crap after verifying it with fiddler it still did a lot of connections after just basic search for file. So i installed mint... and im pretty happy anything adobe is handled now by VM and games here work pretty good beyond Tarkov and Valorant etc which i don't play anyways so im happy. Linux feels extremly stable at least mint for now... i tried Arch but after i seen what was happening with AUR i didn't feel good about it so retracted back to Mint which is where i stay for now at least it just werks.

fedora is not ibm, unless you are using redhat enterprise linux it's the same as running Nyaarch or Hannah Montana linux that some morbidly obese indonesian or pakistani tranny made in his basement while giggling and playing with his two incher. openSUSE is the same story, especially with Leap practically being dead and having like 2 contributors so if you're stupid enough to install it have fun with your deadendshitos, and Tumbleweed is practically factory upstream with barely any testing that breaks every week if you use opi codecs. Ubuntu is literally a niggerhell african word for globohomo, that comes with nagging in your terminal to use Ubuntu Pro and give them your email. There's nothing good in linux, it's deadendshitos.

That might be the case at some point while learning how Linux works, but I've passed that point pretty quickly. I can't even remember when I last had to compile something from source that I didn't write myself. I do a lot of actual, productive work on Mint and general OS management stuff like making sure the most recent update didn't break any of my settings is less work than on Windows, actually.
Sure, it might be even better on MacOS but I don't like that for other reasons.

You can't get past that point, it never ends because linux desktop is not even 1.5% of overall computing devices. And it's mostly used by third worlders or piratefags that won't purchase anything anyways. No software or hardware will ever go out of their way to support it. The transition pain never ends, you will never feel comfortable in your new postop body or OS, or feel accepted by society.

there was this wiki for aib memes which's dead. it had articles for linux where loonix tinker trannies were called deranged but also said tinker trannies had a subsection where they laughed at winshitters, everyone agreed that bsd was cuck lisenced and ittodlers were gay, and it all was mixed with some objective facts. this is where i've learned about linux.
a few years later i began to become interested in coding and generally being a powe user. except i'm retarded (really naturally bad at programming) and my first choice was k&r with an ncurses snake as a pet project, all in cblocks ide. naturally i've failed. i was discouraged to code for a while, but was still interested in computer stuff in general, so i remembered about linux and decided to research it. a few days later i had first got ubuntu iso and booted it (it was shilled as the user friendly choice which just werks), then made a debian vm with no graphics (because ubuntu also was shilled as a choice for mentally invalid). though initially confused, i did have access to internet, so i lurked and adopted (i genuinely liked cli interface since it and had and has no distractions, yes man pages and you could/can just install software via a package manager, a wow for a windows casual like me). since then years passed.
i think a great deal of /g/tards are prejudiced against everything but the os of their choice. and since windows, macos and android (which's not linux and never will be) have the majority of humanity using them, linux, bsd or any other alternatives got rejected simply because they're not these systems. now everything's gay and s you get both loonix shills and people who ditch their os for linux because they have no other viable choice. this isnt natural and the future is grim.

RHEL is not free, and even if you installed it it's barebones with a tiny repo focused on enterprise and servers, and not general desktop use programs that you'd expect to have access to. If the average fedora/ubuntu midwit troon can access around 2% of all software/hardware that windows/macos users have access to, then the average rhel troon after signing up for rhel and bottoming to get the license would have access to 0.5%, or you'd have to rely on flatpaks, that are complete security risks that ship outdated packages without any testing and are usually considered wrong to use (example: valve doesnt recommend them, chrome/firefox/brave don't recommend them as they break sandboxing, fedora maintainers don't recommend it and ship their own tiny fedora flathub repo as it's a security risk and has low testing control in flathub)

Sure grandpa, whatever you say. There's a reason that if you go on linux youtube channels the only people using them are either ecelebs testing them out for views who on the side use proper windows/macos laptops, or it's some indian teenager trying to become a pajeetgrammer, or some old pensioner nigga in his 50s-60s-70s talking about how troonix is the future (nigga doesnt know he'll die in 2 years and troonix is a deadendshitos that will never be anything but some vague promise of a future that will never come)

After about two weeks of using it on my home desktop, my work computer laptop forced the Win11 update and Copilot everywhere. I submitted an IT ticket to and had my work laptop (windows ThinkPad) replaced with a MacBook Pro.

Now I'm fully Windows free.

This seems like the right thread to ask in.
MS cracking down on local accounts is the last straw for me on my desktop (with Nvidia GPU). I've been running Linux on my laptop for a few years now and really enjoy using Hyprland currently as it reminds me of when I used AwesomeWM in college in 2012.
Are Nvidia 's proprietary drivers consistent enough to not be a problem on Wayland/Hyprland at this point? I will still need them for some games, but none are AAA/anticheat-ridden so they should be fine in Proton. I'm also very comfortable using Linux already but less with a graphical environment outside the laptop as the other machines are all servers.
Going to do Arch if it matters for the question.

When the end of support for XP was announced is when I jumped ship. I knew Ubuntu existed, I had heard of Linux but that was the extent of my knowledge on the subject. I had a Dell Pentium 4 and a Pentium M laptop at the time and my search for a free (as in free beer) lightweight OS led me to Lubuntu. For some reason Ubuntu kept getting worse with each new release so I distrohopped a little bit, tried Arch, Opensuse, decided I would stick to APT so now I'm on Debian since the release of Buster. For me it just works.

>But HDR only really actually works on KDE Plasma because I guess I have a specific nvidia GPU and specific monitor that nobody has that make GNOME HDR not work
>KDE Plasma only has options for fractional scaling, not font scaling
>Fractional scaling fucks and ruins fonts here and there
>Firefox (exclusively on nvidia, as I tested it myself) shows very deformed fonts, and when wayland fractional scaling is enabled on it, the scaling makes it so font sharpness is up to window size for whatever reason (sometimes really blurry, sometimes really sharp)
>The moment I set up my monitor to the highest refresh rate, adaptive sync misbehaves and makes the monitor blank out at times
>Get random window and panel artifacts that won't always easily go away
This is all headache inducing and sure, I fucked up by buying nvidia, and like I tested myself, AMD does work these problems out, but 1. I'm not switching to my older AMD GPU and 2. I'm not buying a new AMD GPU until it's considerably better than the shit I already have and 3. I'm not getting rid of HDR specially when to some extent it does work, and really works well when properly set up.

Anyways OP, there's this thing called NVCleanstall. I'm surprised you couldn't look that one up.

it is a difficult position to be in if you want to switch but have both recent and expensive hardware that isn't ideally suited for linux, and this is probably reasonably common as nvidia is a very popular option.
i'm not really sure what the solution is, it would depend on your preferences and situation. you can either;
- deal with the downsides and use it anyway
- sell your card and replace it
- dual boot/passthrough/use another machine in the mean time
- just wait until you're ready to upgrade
i've probably done a bit of each of these in some form over the years, but for some time now my computer has been comprised of parts purchased with the intention of using it in linux. it's a first time user problem which you won't need to deal with at any later point

I considered setting up an x11 desktop session and separately a gamescope session to have HDR working on games and maybe some video player through it like mpv. Basically make it work like my deck (which has KDE running on x11 on desktop mode). Kind of an annoyance but I doubt I can benefit from having HDR on desktop just for editing tools.
I considered selling the card but I'm shit at selling practically anything.
Dual boot is more annoying than the first option I thought of. It would open up using some software I know doesn't run on linux well at all, but I'm not that invested, it was just 20 bucks lost on a lightroom alternative full of AI bullshit.
I've been patiently waiting for a while for nvidia drivers to just get better. These are issues that don't happen outside of that, so if they just fucking fixed these I wouldn't be inclined to fuck off from Wayland.
Or, or, if Plasma devs decided to restore a setting that was there before Plasma 6, and let me change the font scaling factor, that'd be a huge help. It wouldn't solve everything, but GNOME has this (through GNOME tweaks, so it's not exactly exposed) and it gets overly criticized for not having fractional scaling support, but increasing the font scaling factor doesn't fuck up my fonts the way setting Plasma to 125% scaling does for whatever reason.
