Yes. People buy them to support a company that acts in good faith and is pro-consumer, as opposed to buying products that are objectively a better deal but support companies that will fuck you over every chance they get. It's okay to not buy them if you're evil, poor, or stupid. The rest of us understand and forgive you.

If you're doing a lot of travel the only really repairable laptop will be a MacBook since it's the only one parts will be on hand anywhere in the world.

Same generally goes for smart phones although popular models from Samsung, Xiaomi the parts are ubiquitous everywhere also.

OP is right. A t14 gen 5 is 200 dollarinos cheaper than a framework 12. After 2 or 4 years, I could resell the T14G5 and add a few more to get whichever was the new kid added to the used markets.
All this while having the peace of mind of having local support and cheap spare parts availability nearby.

I travel a lot for work, just left Korea actually.

Last year in Japan my L14 gen4 I think(?), you know what I did and most companies do? They tell you to grab your company card out go find a laptop you need and redownload everything from the cloud/profile/settings/etc. Expense it and then bring the old laptop back with you till you get home or a place you can ship it back into the office.

That's it.

If your company while traveling doesn't have some plan for accidents that happen or cloud/server based file backups/copies for any work. You're doing it wrong.

lol no

Their cheapest model is an i3 13th gen for 550 no anything, to add ram/ssd and the expansion slots for basic functionality you're looking at around 800 1x8GB stick/512SSD.

For what is essentially the basic model in cost, I can get picrel w/ 1 year warranty and go.

Replaceable laptop batteries are not as expected as they used to be. That's at least not a knock against them.
The cells themselves matter less in this case since obviously they can be replaced. And since their specifications are open, anyone could design and use a better cell once developed. And from what I can see from the news, multiple non-Framework people have been making advances in battery tech.

You may consider this a cop out but I'm trying to highlight that we as consumers are not soley dependent on Framework itself to solve all the problems, the benefit of their open designs lets anyone outdo them at their own game, for the benefit of us all, at any point in time.
I.e. I could just buy their shell and then get some experimental nuclear battery bullshit from China and slot it in myself.
I don't have to be an important person at a big company and make vendor specific requests to companies like Dell, IBM, et al. anytime I want something custom made. Whether its the main board, battery, whatever.

I really admire this as a cheapass who prefers to keep and maintain things long term.
I don't like getting used to a product and then switching to a new one every year. If it's good and I'm familiar with it, I want to keep using it forever just with component upgrades.

>>106849080
Adding something that may or may not be obvious
>And since their specifications are open, anyone could design and use a better cell once developed.
This extends not just to innovations, but costs too. It's possible for someone to make and sell framework compatible components that are cheaper than Framework themselves can.
I don't know if anyone is doing this, but if someone out there looks at their business model and thinks they can do it better, they actually could.
It's not hard for me to believe the Chinese are already doing this, but I haven't actually checked myself yet. But surely you can imagine cheap modules being made and you could compromise and use those over first party ones if it mattered to you, or go the other extreme and make your own high quality ones better than theirs while still being compatible.

Yeah, I was going to say...I've been to a lot of countries(admittedly mostly Asian and NA ones, so there's a bias here), and in my experience essentially if there is an Apple Store there, there's also always going to be some massive extensive 'tech mall' full of little specialized booths and shops that will likely have whatever you need.
And places that don't have Apple Stores are seemingly more likely to still have those specialized tech malls as well.
I'm not sure on the exact state where Apple Stores are located, but there's always some tech scene since people need computer and computer repair.
Trying really hard to think of an example where you could get an Apple device repaired that wouldn't have something like a 'tech district' where people get their lower cost devices repaired(as well and buy/sell/trading).
Maybe it's different in Africa or EU or something?

this is genuinely something i pondered
a decently specd macbook can last easily 6 to 8 years, and I've seen plenty of people still rocking their 10-year-old macbooks pro without hiccups, even older
so ultimately, is it better to buy a high quality laptop with long lifespan or a thinkerer laptop that can easily be repaired during its lifespan?
i don't have an answer, and I wanted to buy the framework, but I ended up with a macbook pro because frameworks ended up costing a fuck of a lot more in my country thanks to retaliatory tariffs.
