I'll tell you what, I'm 100% in favor of open source, open source is like medicine, in fact I think many of the so called "copyright laws" or patents that are applied to medicine should also be applied to software.

You can patent an algorithm/software but after 5 years it's free game for all of humanity, I wouldn't want medicine to be 100% closed source in the hands of 1 company, this is why competition is good, open source means more competition, you can just fork a piece of work and modify it and do something better with it.

1. Just anyone cannot start programming and make tens of thousands of dollars because of the efficient market hypothesis.

2. Good programs will never be cost effective because they take decades to create. Money cannot buy good code, just expedient code.

If there was no free software, it would be very hard to host/share services that exist today since everything would require money (and identification/auth). Today it's easy to find well documented code on a git repo and clone-install. In a way this is a good timeline thanks to that.

- companies selling open source software make bank by selling support contracts, which are mandated by insurance companies' cybersecurity policies
- Microsoft's position has been "won" by using monopolistic tactics, not by innovation
- Apple has _never_ innovated, only refined existing concepts, and it's current stranglehold on mobile devices has been won mostly by positioning itself as a luxury brand. The most it can claim is releasing products at the right time (iPod)
- as true as "free software is bug-ridden" is, so is proprietary software, especially when you mix indian programmers into the mix
