Anonymous No.106853706 [Report]

I'd reprogram the knob to some unused f-keys (e.g. f15 and f16, and f17 for pressing it down) and set those as global hotkeys for foobar volume up, volume down, mute. That way there's no context in which they do not alter the music volume the way I intend.

The thing that makes windows volume controls useless is that they are unpredictably context-dependent and sometimes do nothing.

Literally the only 4.5U PBT spacebar I could find was white so I had to find some set that works with both black and white for the rest of the case.
Also what should I do about the case and retarded 0.75U keys that are still disgusting ABS? Plastidip the case so it feels like old thinkpad exterior?
Cutting navkeys to fit would leave huge gaps on the sides. Opinions on mixing profiles? Would super low profile flat nav cluster and f-row work with the rest of the keys being normal profile?

I've lived a full life. I'm a virgin, I'm well over 30 years old, and I earn my living working from home. But when I am old and seconds from death (ideally), I know perfectly well what I'm going to be thinking about.
My parents. My friends. The pets I've had.
Hah, got you. I will think of my oneitis - GOT YOU AGAIN!
I will think of my parents, my friends, the pets I've had, and then I will think of the one thing that gave my life meaning outside of these people, these beings and the experiences I shared with them.
GMK.
That's right. GMK. I will think of the group buys I endured, I mean we endured as a community. Our shared suffering, our mutual misery, the pathos of not receiving my GMK Hyperfuse, the bathos of unboxing GMK British Racing Green R2 and finding all the keycaps in their proper place.
The joy of finding extras in a random Discord announcement after you missed out on a GB, the sheer bliss of holding a box of the finest double-shot ABS plastic that mankind has come up with. And finally, when I see the light, I will remember (verbatim!) my favourite product description of any GMK set ever (CYL FTRO)
>Is the future shiny? Is it chrome? Many may wonder, but rarely do we receive answers to such questions—until now. Through a garbled transmission from a date unknown, Earth of 2024 has been warned. Divert course; take back the joy of digitized input before the oppressors take over!
>Hard-coded into this message were the blueprints necessary to create a set of keycaps to aid us. Enlisting the support GMK electronic design GmbH and leveraging their techniques, this double-shot ABS keyset has been enhanced with UV printed APL operator sublegends. Take up the call with the ORIGIN base kit, or add some extra boost to your signal with the optional ALERT add-on kit.

It greatly offends my sensibilities.

I'll admit it's pleasant that the dark gray matches the gray of the board reasonably close, and the color scheme is attractive. The legends (where they are normal) are good, the caps don't show any warping or other failures to be uniform, the shined ABS with that profile is a good look. All of this I freely admit.

You can call it "autism" to have aesthetic standards which can be violated, but you would thereby relegate nearly all aesthetic criticism to the domain of the psychiatrists. I contend that it is healthy to have certain lines which, when crossed, produce revulsion.

I will never accept a violation of the purity of the alpha cluster. I will always be uneasy at a mismatch between a key's face value and its actual use. Etc. And I will always feel contempt for those who view these as personal eccentricities, and who think all is a matter of "taste", and "subjective", and arbitrary.

Also I like the unique Apple style font on your Photon, it looks weird but in a good way because it's consistent and the print quality is pretty sharp for such a small font.

>cleaning and chemicals and shit
That's really the worst part of resin printing, it is a chore and it's messy, you need a good organic respirator, which isn't expensive (like 20 bucks?), but still a health hazard.
Again, if you don't want to mess with the stuff, you can always send the keycap models to a shop that prints them. Just be sure to print it in a durable resin or the keycap connector columns might be too brittle.

Here's a close-up of a failed batch I made recently for a prototype.

Can't vouch for it because I've never bought Vortex but this one with double shot PBT keycaps and Cherry MX2A Silent Red switches is $115 and doesn't look particularly flashy/desirable for theft, maybe a good pick I don't know:

https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/products/vortex-type-wireless-hotswap-keyboard

Vortex themselves are allegedly a nightmare to deal with, so don't expect any customer support from them (as you wouldn't really expect with most Chinese companies), but in the case that it's defective it can be returned to this American vendor. it's a reddit hobby
your keyboard isn't at it's best till you
>inject lubricant in the stabilizers
>disassemble your switches and paint lube on each part by hand
>lubing the springs too because your mechanical keyboard actually making mechanical noises triggers your autism
>fix the shitty manufacturing tolerances of every switch part by stuffing plastic shims in between each switch housing so they won't rattle even a little bit
>cover the bottomside of the PCB with painter's tape
>fill the open space in the case with foam or sheets of rubber
>fill the underside of the keycaps with sound dampening material
>all so you can type as daintily and as softly as possible
all this work gets invalidated the second you try to bottom out the keys like a normal person btw

To be fair the major players didn't make any improvements in design, especially manufacturing tolerances, for decades. Imagine if Cherry actually gave a shit about refining the MX platform instead of sitting on it for years.
MX2A is literally "new spring WHOOOOA", years and years after people were doing that themselves. Meanwhile some Chinesium switches have tighter housings and are better in other metrics for a fraction of the cost.

I've been doing this for numpad on my 65% and I'm surprised by how well it works. (My normal fn key is next to the arrow cluster, but since I use R3 control I have another fn key in the lower-left corner.) Getting used to the key locations is a little awkward because of the stagger, but now I can type my ○ — é etc. without serious difficulty. I'll have to practice a little more for it to be a serious alternative for fast number input, but for uses where the numpad keys were absolutely required at least I have them. I might try doing a custom monkeytype of numbers and operators to practice.

The idea of adding a tomatometer to the Netflix browser is so fucking funny though. It takes two seconds to check this in another tab, so the utility implied here only makes sense if you watch a TON of Netflix (ie, you are a woman). And besides that, who cares? Oh no, I can't decide whether to watch Sinners (2025) dir. Ryan Coogler or Eddington (2025) dir. Are there any companies that offer PCBs similar to the K95 Vengeance layout but with better positioned and profiled media controls above the numpad and something resembling those 18 extra programmable macro keys on the same circuit board as opposed to a seprate daughterboard?

If not, then I'll probably just get a separate alphanumeric pad of some kind on a separate USB connection anyway. Having the entire keyboard be programmable on a hardware level with more modifier keys and macros are more important to me so I don't have to use proprietary Windows-only software.

Oh yeah, and if they support those magnetic hall effect switches then all the better.

He wants a full-size. Why should he care if there's another four pages of wrong-layout keyboards?

Let's put it another way. If I were a French guy, and I bought these keycaps to put on a full-size keyboard:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007307683294.html
..could I even find an appropriate-color keyboard to put them on? (Putting aside the question of whether black works with beige, which some do believe, but I don't.) After some looking, the only thing I can find is the Cherry G80-3000 in gray.

And this is one of the most 'classic' and popular keycap colors. If I were a US-ANSI guy, I could right away point to a slew of options from Keychron, Ducky, Leopold, 8bitdo, Filco, Vortex, FL-ESports, maybe more. This while it's generally acknowledged that the full-size options aren't very good compared to, e.g., TKL.

For ISO there's... black keychrons, maybe a white keychron if you're lucky, Cherry G80-3000, Varmilo, some gaymer brands like Corsair, Razer, Designed by GG. Almost none of it goes with beige. Why do you feel the need to gaslight our French friends and pretend this is lots of good options?

>and switch a few key around.
That fucks up the sculpt, so unless you mean "buy a new set of keycaps" or they happen to offer an azerty add-on kit, no you can't.

Before I gave away my old Daskeyboard with failing end-of-life MX Brown switches I soldered in a new set of Xinhais that I wasn't going to miss. It kind of became a vehicle for getting rid of some ill-advised purchases from when I was new to the hobby, including a set of ducky OEM WoB keycaps. I put a thin layer of felt in the bottom case and it actually sounded pretty OK, looked reasonably new too with new caps.

I would never, ever do Xinhais in a hotswap board, they are just so undersized. And I wasn't into linears enough to solder them into something of mine permanently. So they seemed like a perfect fit.

That's not all. The BAL-27 with the Deathmarch mod gets a wider shotgun-style reticle that breaks when you use the scarlet laser. You can move around with it without expanding the crosshairs, stack it with the hipfire attachments and you get insane bonuses for min spread. Disgusting.

Caps look high quality. Some dislike icon mods but I think they're OK. I'd prefer nav sublegends on numpad keys if this weren't a full-size, but it is, so number-only is nice. / * on numpad is ideal. Good board-caps match. Brown accent doesn't make sense to me but it's not totally offensive. Accent spacebar I dislike because there is no thematic unity between spacebar, numrow, f-keys. Rubber finish on cable is good, shame the usb-c housing isn't darker, but cables are never perfect.

Overall ok.

I come from a couple of backgrounds on this question, both of which inform my feelings about beige.

The first is a hipster creative sort of background, where "showing one's creativity through colorful extravagant objects/clothes/etc" was totally out of fashion, an inferior and cloying kind of "creativity" in which stupid people indulged; partly, this comes from a fatigue being around other constantly-signaling 'creatives', and a need to discriminate those who "get it" from those who don't.

The other background was MMORPG video games, especially WoW at the advent of "transmogrification". When players had the freedom to decide what they looked like, every average Joe decided to look flashy, big, and ornate. Google "WoW tier transmog" and you'll get an idea of what these players looked like. To stand around in Stormwind was to be surrounded by a million epic badass video game superheroes, and it looked like shit. In this context it felt radical to eschew everything 'awesome' and opt to look like an NPC instead. This was the mark of the superior aesthetic sensibility.

"Personalized" keyboards exist because people are vain. All of us are using them to advertise our sensibilities. My keyboards announce my judgment of everyone else's. Mine are thoroughly Puritan, demonstrating a high degree of aesthetic restraint, with no flourishes, no jokes, no "pops of color". By this absence of idiosyncracies they are also, as it happens, very anonymous; by so being, they express humility. For humility's sake I also like to see a maker's mark on a keyboard, though sadly they're rare today. Allowing a bit of branding on the face of your keyboard is allowing the maker their due credit for the piece that they have made, and I think the trend toward 'minimalism' (thankfully dying) is the height of consumer arrogance.

But most important of all, I think beige caps are beautiful, far more beautiful than every desperate grasping GMK set

Soldering makes sense when you're buying a custom and you want some obscure non-standard layout like split space or something. Soldering does not make sense in any other situation. It just doesn't. There is no good reason not to include hotswap sockets, even if the board comes fully built.

Cope. It's democratic now. Everyone knows what switches do, what stabs are good, or how to lube stabs, use evergreen PE/tape mods. It's a very good thing. It used to be gayer before with YTers using tiny ass stab keycaps and going CREAMY MARBLY SPACEBAR IT SHOULDN'T SOUND THIS GOOD THOCK THOCK
It is infinitely better now.

>no GMK stranglehold for quality caps
>endless stabilizers so you're not SOL if your faves aren't in stock
>no more tangerine oil kang gazzew stranglehold, there's dozens of switches maximizing the diversity of linears in particular, fags can't cope that linears are all the same
>keyboard manufacturers offer different plates and weights so no need to DIY that shit unless you want to
>brands like qwertykeys release relatively cheap bangers so no one has to suffer shitty prebuilts
>even GMK is less of an ass, lead times are much better now and scalping is practically gone unless you're looking for decade old sets
>even cheaper keyboard kits come with different mounting styles, stab pads and accessories, I really like the ball catch shite they have nowadays
I'm sure there's other improvements but these alone demonstrate how it's better than ever today if you're into mechanical keyboards.

Anonymous No.106896854 [Report]
I needed something small and compact, so i got the logitech 515 and it works great. apparently got a later release that fixed some issues, so that might be the case. Works great wireless or bluetooth. What switches does it use? Seems to be brown or red.

Also got a m55 mouse and can recommend that as well.

Corsair and steelseries have a few good, cheap mechanical keyboards. Generally look for something in the 40-80 dollar price range. Certain iterations of the k55 can be gotten for much cheaper than that even.

Just got this thing for gaming. It's not bad and it's a big improvement over using my 100% Das for StarCraft II but I really don't get their logic:
>They basically implemented a full keyboard left of the T including the... capslock key? Why on earth is there a capslock key like that's needed. I just rebound it.
I had expected the fn key with the keys to at least unlock some common letter sor a very useful key like an enter key or something with something but not really It actually only works with the space to cycle through color patterns and with escape to do a factory reset. Feels like that caps lock key could better just function as an enter to begin.
It apparently be configured to do map to arbitrary things with various keys but that needs some software that only works on Windows.

The macro keys by default are just bound to the same F keys that are already on the keyboard as well.

Basically, insane defaults that need some windows-only software to fix but it's not like it matters for my use case but it's weird all the same.

Would make far more sense to at least have an enter.

Also, it's my first time trying browns rather than blues, not sure yet.

You are just so wrong, 10 years ago it was a faggot hipster only hobby with gatekeepers everywhere. EXPENSIVE gatekeepers

Now is a normie tier hobby with a well understood keyboard creation pipeline, cheap but quality parts, and well defined use cases for each piece.

You used to have to suck keycult's dick for an aluminum board and now china shits out keycult quality aluminum boards for 30 dollars a pop

Its straight miraculous

Because many games by default bind important functions to the caps lock key, since it is close to WASD
