China has more rare earth elements than Africa. It doesn't surprise me that China mines in Africa because they are cheap, have even fewer regulations, and you can mine for rare earth anywhere. They could sift through tons of earth in the US as well for these same elements, but it would be catastrophic for the environment. It just so happens that China produces more than most other countries / continents. They don't have to dig as much.

This is just geopolitics. The US is squeezing China with semiconductors, limiting access to its markets though tariffs to bring up domestic manufacturing capacity and China is pushing back with rare earths, which they have built a monopoly position with. This isn't going to get solved short term.

They were "good enough", that's all they ever had to be. All anyone ever asked from these services was that they were the baseline minimum when it came to human communication. Now, they can't even be that because of their constant race to SEO and market themselves as advertising platforms instead of social media sites.

Considering this is the primary, sole reason these sites even exist in the first place, then it's reasonable to conclude that they have degraded as to be useless. Same goes for Search Engines, having to use Russian search engines to find things on the English internet is not a good feeling.

The minerals are not actually rare.
The US actually already has a reasonable mining market share for it's size.
The issue is refining.
Refining is very polluting, and it's very expensive to meet regulations and clean up in the West.
So basically: the world outsourced their pollution to China, and now they have a monopoly.
