Microsoft won
Before the end of 10, I saw so many people claiming they wouldnt upgrade to Windows 11 or would just ignore the support end. But the truth of the matter is that most people ARE updating their systems. Be it by updating the current PC or by ditching it and buying a new one. And not a single soul has switched from Windows to Linux or MacOS during this whole transition

What's causing that jump in 7 usage? Is there some custom ISO based on it that's making moves?

There wasn't ever a reason to stop using W7 aside from security.

this has got to be a bug in the chart, right? That would mean 22% of active Windows versions are Windows 7 again. Or maybe a custom ISO as >>106886834 said. I cant imagine tech boomers not knowing how to upgrade to Win11 but then going "hrmpf alright let me just downgrade to Windows 7!!"

People aren't orgs
Orgs need AD
until there is an actual replacement for AD whatever the latest version of windows marketshare will always be the winner
And anyone buying a new PC/Laptop will be getting w11 anyway

Windows 11 runs worse on a new high-end machine than 7 does on a mid-range one from 10 years ago. 7 also does not fuck with the user, it's still "My Computer" in lots of ways.

I just spent some time looking into this, because you're right; it absolutely cannot be right.

It turns out that it is proper data though.
The pic in OP has not been altered, nor been filtered to show in a certain way.
As it turns out, there HAS indeed been an uptick in W7 installs in Q3 2025.

The interesting part of this, though, is the fact that it's only 1 region, which skews the data for the worldwide view.
In North/South America, Europe, and Oceania, W7 installs are at a near 0% (as to be expected).
There has been no uptick in W7 installs in these regions.

In Asia, however, there is a sharp incline of W7 installs, starting from July 2025.

Statcounter is a bit shit when it comes to displaying data, so I had to manually go through each country to check.
But it's not China, India, or even Pakistan, which you might expect.

W7 installs in Sep 2025:
- China: 4,9% (declining)
- India: 1,47% (stable)
- Pakistan: 1,46% (stable)

It actually seems to be centered around the Middle East.
- Iraq: 12,56% (up from 3,9% prev month)
- Saudi Arabia: 2,52% (up from 0,67%)
- Iran: 15,65% (up from 14,25)
- Uzbekistan: 12,97% (up from 2,25%)

I tried looking for that one country, which probably skews the most, but I was unable to find it.

My personal thesis, is that it has something to do with US sanctions, somehow.

Also...
>not a single soul has switched from Windows to Linux or MacOS during this whole transition
Linux is up to ~13% of market share from ~9% at the start of 2025.
It has even overtaken MacOS (sitting at 7,9%)
