It's objectively worse than the old layout.
But what irks me the most is that black bars on videos used to just disappear (OLED laptop and TV), but now they're this gay "ambient" colour.

It's awful.
Youtube claims that the new UI covers up less of the video than before, but because it's transparent and overlaid on top of the video it's actually covering up more of the video than ever before!
