what is the most brutal, hardcore Linux version
I'm looking for the least accessible, most esoteric and most niche version of Linux. I am not an experienced computer user, in fact I don't know anything about what goes on under the hood. I see a walk of code and it just looks like the matrix to me.
Well I want to download a version of Linux that leaves me feeling completely lost, slackjawed and dumbfounded when I try to use it/install it. I want to dive straight into the deep end with no guard rails, no clue and no mercy.

Hit me

Linux is easy actually. I guess Linux from scratch is what you are looking for

LFS technically isn't a Linux distro but if you want to feel even dumber than you already are it's a good pick. I'm actually shocked that no one said "Install Gentoo" because that's the distro you're looking for.

Gentoo is a normal distro that allows you to have fine grained package control, there's really nothing harder about it. One could argue about compiling your own kernel but that can be done in other distros too. LFS is the most barebones approach OP could have, or Slackware that requires you to maintain all the dependencies yourself.

This. And you /will/ learn a lot from it. Everyone should try doing it once. If you haven’t built your own glibc and kernel for your own machine and the foundation of software, you aren’t shit. Get the basics right before doing any GUI.
