There really is no special keyboard type for typing speed. Some typing techniques can utilize 60% boards, but world records have been set by Brazilians in mud huts using 10 dollar membrane keyboards they found in the trash.

And a split keyboard MIGHT be more comfortable for you specifically but there is no proven ergonomic benefit to a split keyboard.

Personality I think they are useful in gaming when you need more space for a mouse, and find their positional adaptability useful as heck. But find them no more comfortable than a normal keyboard and slightly discombobulating.

I have a minor issue with my keyboard where the spacebar will sometimes double tap. This is inconvenient particularly when I play Scout in TF2 but is otherwise mostly ignorable. Is there anything I can do to fix this? It's not a recent thing so I don't think it's related to switch wear.

I'm also looking at getting some new keycaps but am having difficulty finding some I like, so I'm thinking of just getting generic pale grey or blank pure white - not beige, greige or milky white - ones. Is there a practical difference, including wear resistance, between a $10 set from Aliexpress and something from a Chinese vendor Kbdfans or KPRepublic? These PBTfans Beluga Whale ones look nice but I can't disentangle if that's due to the photography and presentation.

I would be open to getting different switches that are quieter, but I am quite happy with how these have been otherwise. As I'm typing this I notice that my frequently used WASD cluster keys feel like there's a bit less resistance when I press them. Maybe I need to replace them.

I would try putting a linear switch in the spacebar and see if that fixes it. Some boards are more susceptible to double-press problems for reasons which I struggle to understand; a tactile switch like the T1 will exacerbate that because it has more contact bounce (due to the way tactile bump loads up the leaf spring and makes for more forceful contact)

If e.g. a hyperglide black also has problems in the spacebar, then it's a serious problem.

it's pretty simple, I designed a 65%. usb, esd protection, some power filtering and micro. have enough GPIO (input) pins for rows/columns and a GPIO set as output for LEDs. and maybe a driver for the LEDs signal. and diodes.
I was more curious about DIY'ing a hall effect/tmr keyboard but I think I need a multiplexer and an ADC. RP2040 has a 12bit but probably 10bit in practice or smth. curious if enough for tmr. from what I've seen tmr is 0.01mm precision for 4mm travel which means 9bit should do it.

Because keyboards that do try to have polling rates use an MCU that scans the Bus at a certain speed. Typically most MCUs scan at 1 frame every 1 millisecond (this is limited by your USBs type most run at Full Speed.)

But more advanced keyboards like the wooting he80 scan at High Speeds, which allows them to scan the Bus every 125 microseconds. THE MCU then turns your input into a HID Interrupt OUT that your computer listens for and accepts as input.
Anonymous No.106903262

Well yes, in a way even if you smashed your keyboard as fast as you could and could move your arms at the speed of sound you would have a hard time sending more than 50 reports every second.

But the real difference in reaction speed, 1000hz vs 8000hz is 850 microseconds, this turns in the a considerably quicker reaction speed over the span of 100 inputs.

But yeah if you were just typing you don't even need an MCU some sort of switch matrix could handle the 3 to 6 inputs you could possibly manage a second

Pulled apart my keyboard to put bigger pads under the spacebar stabs; the 0.2mm pads quickly get squished down to where they're barely softer than bottoming out against the PCB. In future I think I'm going to default to 0.3mm stab pads on the spacebar, even if I'm not doing a silent build, just because the sound of the stem piece hitting the pcb is so unpleasant. 0.2mm seems to be ok for 2u stabs.

After 3 hours (total across 3 monkeytype sessions) of forcing myself to use left thumb exclusively for spacebar I still find myself gradually falling into exclusive use of my right thumb. At least I'm not using my index finger anymore...

I think I need to get a keyboard with a split spacebar and write some sort of program to put a couple of 'bars' on the screen that fill up, with a threshold for each, and if I use too much of one or the other thumb (I'll probably set it to prefer 60/30 right thumb to left) I'll exceed the threshold and disable that spacebar until I bring the balance back with the other one. In this way maybe I can teach myself to use both together, which I find very difficult to practice.

What's the best cheap board (let's say under $150 for the kit, I can supply my own switches/caps) with a split spacebar? It can be more expensive if it's really beautiful. Might be willing to try Neo Ergo type stuff, unsure. Not down for a split keyboard.

well shit, anon. I've used Knights in both Intros and my Monsgeek and I've had no issue with it. If you used it in your Apple font keyboard, is it possible the wire is bent or if there's some hollow underneath that's making the backspace ping? It's a small key compared to the enter/shift/spacebar so QC can't be an issue, right?

Rattle is caused by much more than just ungreased stabilizers. In some cases it can be something as simple as keycaps being too loose, or too tight. It can be from overlubing causing a high pitched noise when bottoming out. It can be from stabilizers that aren't seated fully (and sometimes not seating them fully can make them NOT rattle, too), it can be from unbalanced stab wires -- if you removed them it's possible you flip them the other way, perhaps that way is more even than the other side. It can be a lot of things.

https://www.keychron.uk/products/keychron-k2-he-wireless-magnetic-switch-custom-keyboard?variant=46328157831338

I tried looking around to see if there's any good stuff in UK but wasn't so successful. Even something like a V3 Max ISO breaks your budget significantly:
https://www.keychron.uk/products/keychron-v3-max-qmk-wireless-custom-mechanical-keyboard-iso-layout-collection?variant=46132506624170

I type long sections of things I intend to read or re-read. It's almost as good as reading, if you can type quickly enough; and it reinforces a more correct English style in my own typing. Ten hours' practice typing Dryden or Charles Lamb or Carlyle cannot but improve one's own choice of words when one takes to type something for himself, habituated as you inevitably become to typing things in their voice.

But I want a new keyboard for the office and my first thought was to just buy a cheap wireless logitech normie keyboard because mechanicals are just too loud.

I recommend getting Lichix raw silent small bump tactiles. They're going to be significantly quieter than MX Browns but otherwise feel sorta similar, and they're quieter but not completely "silent" and mushy. I think Geon in South Korea is the only one who still has them though:
https://geon.works/products/raw-silent-switch?variant=43516367175843

Then get whatever sort of plastic Keychron is the right size for you I guess. This one's probably just fine:
https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-k10-max-qmk-wireless-mechanical-keyboard?variant=42220422398041

Just make sure you get one of the hot-swappable ones. And I'd recommend removing some of the foam with these switches because it will sound better having a nice hollow keyboard case.

There are cheaper ways to do this of course but Lichix switches are really top-notch, they have a nice firm bottom-out, no spring ping, minimal stem wobble, very nice switches. I'm using them right now. I got the big-bump version and they're nice too but as an mx brown guy you might find them too tactile.

Nice this thread is here, never visited the board but was just about to ask one question regarding mechanical keyboards.

Do you guys think it's still worth it? I'm using a shitty membrane keyboard right now but it was SO CHEAP and it does it's job alright. I bought a cheaper mechanical keyboard and one of the switches came out of the box already double-clicking or not clicking at all, so i returned it.
Another one i had endured a bit longer, but at the end i also ended up having issues out of nowhere. Like, i didn't spill anything on it, it didn't fall, nothing like that, some keys just stopped working.

My opinions on these types of keyboard kinda soured lately, feels like you pay a premium to get a product that, while nicer, will have problems in a 1 or 2.

>why do you think "they" are pushing HE over TMR?
What? They operate the same in the sense that they both detect the magnet field. TMR is more precise. And companies are migrating to TMR already. All new Keychron designs are with TMR. 10 times higher resolution for sensor position, lower power draw which helps battery on time.
Keychron calls their TMR design as "HE" in the name so people know it's still with magnets, but they use TMR sensors:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/keytron/keychron-q16-he-8k-worlds-first-fully-ceramic-keyboard
They kept HE in the name but clearly stated TMR sensors + magnetic switches.
> HE can be ease dropped on just as easily as wireless keyboards
With directional antenna they can pick up radio signals from further away. Not sure how they'll manage that for small ass magnets in the switches. Bluetooth/Wifi emits at higher radio power than cable leaks.
You'd be less confused if you actually learned about these things instead of parroting random shit schizos say online.

Does it make you feel better if others also do what you're too lazy/retarded/comfortable do? You're just dragging everyone else down to your retarded level so you don't feel as bad for acting like hedonistic moron.

>magnetometer
That's ... what HE/TMR sensors are tho. And they work on small distances for the strength that your switches magnets have. Your speaker magnets drown any switch magnet field anyway, or other EM shit.
>Nah, give up, be comfy, stop resisting
Stop using passwords, stop locking your car, bad guys can get in anyway etc etc bunch of retardation.

>Your wire acts as an antenna if not highly insulated
your bluetooth signal could be read by some retarded kid with a flipper zero that got an update to read wireless keyboards, from your driveway
compared to some Boston Dynamics lab setup decoding your keyboard cable signal from 3 feet away with 10 million dollars gear specifically calibrated for one month time to manage to decode something.

ABS doesn't look like shit after years of use, it just looks shiny.

ABS is fine. It just shines up faster. Just think of it as a patina.

Yes. A lot of people even manually shine them. It's fine.

That pic looks fine because it was manually polished so every cap looks consistently glossy across the entire top surface. Just typing on it normally makes it look like the blue GMK set from the other pic.

so with abs ablating away you're basically breathing in and getting microplastics all over your body and workspace?

I mean, PBT does it too. There's no escaping microplastics.

I know English dictionaries give the false impression that this is a good use of "ablate" but if you had studied Latin you wouldn't dare choose that over, e.g., abrade
