>Apple starts selling Macbook Pros M5

I technically have 2 weeks to return it but I'm conflicted, shipping it back is a bit of a hassle and I'm not sure the upgrade is worth the effort.
Also waiting an extra week to get my hands on a new laptop is pretty annoying.

They usually release the new models in the 2nd/3rd week of november and waiting more than a month for a laptop (that wasn't even announced yet) just wasn't feasible. There were also rumors about possible delays making it even harder to simply wait and hope.
Instead, both the announcement and release came earlier than expected.

I know it sounds like a no brainer but I got the M4 with a 400€ discount and I'm already behind schedule on a couple of projects.
So I'd have to fill all the forms, ship back the M4 at my expense, probably wait 1-2 weeks for the legal/payment procedures and pay 400 extra euros for the new model.
Meanwhile I'd have to put two clients on hold and hope I can find a colleague that's available to cover for me (surely not for free, he'd get the cash for next 1-2 weeks' worth of projects).

So it's a shitty deal short-term, I just wonder if it really makes sense in the long run. It sounds like the M5 is mostly an upgrade in terms of AI stuff (at least that's how it's marketed) but I already use my nvidia-powered desktop for local stuff, and the fact it's still unreleased means we don't have actual benchmarks to look at.

Yeah but it would be ARM Windows. Windows 11 is shit in terms of user interface, and without the compatibility benefits of x86 Windows there's no point in using it.
Now if Windows 7 would run on ARM Macbooks and it had x86 emulation then maybe it would be worth taking the compatibility hit, assuming at least a web browser and a few useful programs were available native. But AFAIK there's no ARM build of Windows 7 in existence.
Anonymous No.106906731 [Report]
>>106906633
I would agree if Windows 11 wasn't also so bad.
If you regularly use both on comparable machines, chances are you'll prefer macos for tasks that are doable on both systems. I found it easier to come up with a comfier and more optimal workflow on mac because of UI/gestures/shortcuts alone, at this point I only really use Windows for Windows-exclusive software. Also as a media station because of my big ass monitors

It's honestly kind of fucked how good macbooks are at being general purpose machines for basic programming, work, and school. MacOS genuinely just werks and their walled ecosystem is fucking slick once you're in it. I just wish other companies could match them on build quality, the last time I felt any real design inspiration from notebooks was fucking VAIO and they're long since irrelevant. That said if you want to do anything with the hardware Tim Apple doesn't want you to do, you're going to either have to pay some singular dude 10 bucks for a program that would otherwise be open source or freeware on Windows. Kind of annoying, and despite how top tier apple silicon is turning out to be, missing out on x86 along with native bootcamp compatibility fucking sucks. Relying on compatibility layers is annoying. Despite this the ideal setup feels something like
>iphone/macbook
>High end PC for fully efficient shitposting/gaming
>shit tier work laptop provided by your job and a KVM for your desktop

Blogpost aside, upgrade to the fucking M5. They'll likely honor your discount. My pops got us our first mac all in one system around 2008 after owning two vaio desktops, a gateway win95 system and a NEC PC in that order. They were just transitioning from the pic related to the silver ones that they ran with until very recently and they simply upgraded us to the new system for free.

If you care about performance, then they haven't released the good M5s yet, the base M5 is worse than the M4 max
If you don't need the best possible performance then the improvement from the M5 is incremental and not critical. From apple's own marketing, it seems like the main point of this gen has been the ai unit, while the actual CPU provides marginal performance improvements. There is no reason to get a base M5 unless you really really need local ai on your macbook.

Wait for the M5 max, which it sounds like you can't, so just stick with the M4 then.
Anonymous No.106910391 [Report] >>106910588 >>106914647
M5 improvements are centered around the GPU and memory bandwidth. If you do any AI shit like a local LLM the upgrade is huge but if you're not it's negligible.
From what you've said you urgently need a computer to work on and it makes no sense to return the M4 and buy the M5. I think you just have FOMO and want us to validate your decision to keep the M4. Honestly, your situation sounds like you hardly have a choice and must keep the M4 either way. If you're the type of person to think back on things all the time, maybe go through the effort of getting the M5 or you'll be constantly reminding yourself of not swapping when you could.

it's not easy buying something with the knowledge it's about to be replaced. i can't think of a time i bought something with no knowledge it was about to be replaced, that would naturally be more shocking.
since he got it at a discount, he won't be as cut up about it, he has stated already he'd have to pay more for the new one even if he returned it, so he just has to look at it like, if they were both an option, would he have still taken the M4? as if not, is the temptation worth the clock time and downtime of getting the M5? this is something that only op can answer, ultimately

Remember, Apple tech rot means your current laptop will last a year as they intentionally slow it down to unusable. The convenience you have now will be negated by the inconvenience of having to buy the new version anyway in a year, and potentially running into this problem twice.

What?
I got a 2021 Pro M1 with Monterey. NEVER updated until this summer, out of fear of apple fuckery.
Skipped Sonoma and Ventura and went straight to Sequoia, fully expecting "upgrading" the system would fuck up my laptop beyond repair. But it was my last chance before Liquid Ass dropped, and I obviously didn't want it.

In the end it was a painless 20 minutes process and the OS is fucking snappier than it was before.
Been using it for a couple of months and it's noticeably faster, battery is also roughly the same.
I bet most people (including me up until this update) are still paranoid because of Steve Jobs-era iphones getting slower and reports of planned obsolescence, thinking it's genuinely their policy to fuck up your purchases.
