In the good timeline Windows 7's source-code was leaked/released and it was forked into multiple specialties, regularly updated by a massive throng of enthusiasts and this was the most used OS on the planet.

Windows 7 source code is useless for anything other than studying and research use. Methods have already been developed for extending the Win32 APIs transparently and without modifying system files. Decompiling Windows 7 DLLs is trivial and having source code is of limited help. No one is going to reinstall Windows or fuck around copying DLLs when they could just install a DLL overlay, which does not require source code.
What would be useful is Windows 8/8.1/10 source code. That would significantly ease the backporting of new features.

The hard reality is that that what you're describing wouldn't work OP. The only real reason to use Windows is gaming (practically everything else has an equivalent or better on other systems) and considering gaming needs constant driver updates and driver creations for new hardware it wouldn't happen. None of the GPU brands of today would go out of their way to support 1, much less multiple, unofficial Windows versions and the second they drop that support is the second having a long-standing W7 becomes irrelevant. Not to mention other dependencies.

8, 8.1, 10 and 11 would have never been made in that timeline.

In my opinion all OS extensions and mods to Windows 7 should be layered on top of it like lasagna, not spaghetti-tangled throughout the source code.
Having lots of "distros" and shit is just a recipe for disaster and will turn Windows 7 into a Linux-style piece of shit where nothing works properly because some pajeet dev decided to reskin and theme and fuck it up because he wanted his own "edition".

My brother in Christ, every other linux distro, from just werks to autistic ones, are plagued by trannies who want to boss people around. Nix is the best example of that, along with Arch, Chimera and so on. Devs of common troonix software, like Gnome, are incompetent commiepedotroons who literally fail to deliver features present in Windows 98 already.

Both OpenXP and stock XP are fine. You have working web browsers, you have all the good software from its era and can even run some nuslopware with one core api. Unless you for some reason absolutely need to run big nuslopware on your personal computer, or maybe fell for the meme of modern hardware (even though there are people using it on new computers), then its fine. ReactOS is still a meme.
