Are people finally realizing this? Sitting actual TV-watching distance from the screen (you know, the way it was meant to be played), CRT just looks dark and blurry.

The problem here is integer aspect ratio correction which can be technically nonviable for many resolutions (a 640x350 vga image is going to take at least a 22400x16800 display just for that alone) and the extra size required to simulate the leaking of the light emitted by the phosphors and also the lack of proper blanking which makes shit either blurry or actually darker if you try to simulate it. Too many things, and that assuming top of the line consumer monitors in 2025.

I love this varying width scan-line effect of Trinitrons. The brighter the pixel is the wider the scan-line becomes, which happens to interact with eg anti-aliased text so that it creates smoother curves than possible in the input picture itself; literally analog super resolution.
Picrel, eg the top of the letter P demonstrates this effect very clearly. A very objectively picture-improving "artifact" that only happens with CRTs.
Anonymous No.106919664 [Report] >>106919720
>>106919290
this isn't a trinitron-specific effect. it happens with any crt. like see >>106918800. that's a video of a common slot mask crt tv. the beam power affecting the width of the line is a property of crts in general, not what kind of colour mask it uses

Tue but it's the most visible and clear on AGs since they have no vertical phosphor segmentation.

sure, it's more pronounced on trinitrons (or equivalents like diamondtrons made after the patent expired), as they have cleaner lines.

it's a bummer most people don't seem to care about motion performance, like it's not something i see bought up outside of blurbusters... or /g/ crt threads.
i could understand it from people who've never seen a crt before and just can't imagine non-blurry motion, but crt>lcd didn't happen overnight. it doesn't make sense. people can't be that blind, can they?

ps. what monitor are you talking about? do they make 240Hz+ 4K oled monitors? i've only personally tried crt-royale on a 4k oled monitor at 60hz (before the beam simulator shader was made), and it looked great for stills. didn't do anything for motion of course, but it did look nice

yea absolutely, i'm by no means against something replacing crt's, but they have to be at least as good as crts first.
i'm not oblivious to lcd's advantages of course, they're lighter, cheaper to make, larger screens, lower power, sharper, perfect geometry, etc. but this was all at the expense of image quality (except sharpness i suppose), which is a big downside considering we're talking about monitors, where image quality is or should be the first priority

>There simply isn't a game where crts are better.
you seem to be coming from a position of "high level play", and sure, high refresh rate is more important than most other metrics for this use-case. but i don't care about such high level/professional play.
a 480Hz tn lcd being better for a counter-strike player doesn't really make me want to get one, since it won't make any of my games look better
Anonymous No.106920859 [Report] >>106920954

i don't play many newer games.
i'll be clear in that i've never said a crt monitor is "better for gaming" as a blanket statement, there's certainly different kinds of games and goals that benefit more from one or another type of display.
for older games, especially ones locked to 60Hz and lower resolutions, i don't think there's a question that crts are better for those, but for modern games it depends. perhaps you just wanted to call attention to that.

"digital display" is ambiguous. displays are by definition an analog output device. it's like saying "digital speaker", the end result is analog information.
there's nothing stopping someone from adding digital inputs to a crt (there even do exist crt hdtv's with hdmi input)
i can only presume you mean displays with discrete pixels, but even then there was the unreleased SED, which used crt-like technology but with fixed pixels, is that "digital"?

You must be legally blind if you don't see the difference between SDR and HDR, or you're legally retarded and you think you can just turn on HDR, boot any game or movie, and it will instantly work. Actually just retarded, even the legally blind can still notice something as obvious as the huge spike in peak brightness.

You need to enable HDR in your OS, then boot up a game that supports it, then enable it in that game (or use autoHDR, or RTXHDR, but considering you're too retarded to use normal HDR, I'd avoid that). Go play something like Path of Exile 2 with HDR and cast any lightning spell and tell me HDR doesn't make a difference.

Color, but the easier to see is just brightness. Something like a lightning bolt in a game will be multiple times brighter (OLEDs generally have 1000nits on small areas) than in SDR.

There is simply no way to not notice, the effect is strong enough to make a very noticeable difference even just looking around your room instead of at your screen because it will light things up 5x what SDR does.

No, but a lot of games do look better with them, or at least with scanlines.
>>106918891
I know you're trolling, but the difference does seem that severe for some games. I've taken to playing anything N64/PSX and earlier with CRT shaders and PS2 games with scanlines. Really does make a difference in the majority of cases.

Even on my crt monitor I'll inject ntsc filters in any game I play at 480p. It legit just looks better at such a low resolution.
Anonymous No.106924843 [Report] >>106925979
>>106924183
I don't think it's the resolution so much as the graphics being designed for that kind of monitor and looking better with a CRT filter than without. I play PSX/PS2 games on 1080p/1440p/2160p, and they universally look better with a filter.

They do whine but you can't hear it. I heard it as a kid. Don't hear it now. I can hear about 18khz too at nearly 40 years old, and at my age that's pretty fucking good, not sure how I can do it considering all the loud shit my ears have been exposed to. I don't know what frequency that whine is, but it must be super high.

tv's have horizontal deflection yoke whine at 15.7kHz, pc monitors begin at 31kHz and only go up from there.

For DuckStation, I use CRT-NewPixie. For PCSX2, I just use a basic scanline filter. For older systems on RA, just try different things in the "crt" folder in the shader menu and see what you like; I use different things on different machines for that depending on how powerful the GPU is.

it's the motion clarity.

it comes from poor quality transports, namely composite and RF
that video clip is one i made myself, quite a while ago now, but what you're seeing is a totally boring 1999 consumer television, but the picture is from a linux pc running mame, using a homemade cable going from an hd7850's vga port over to scart. i.e. it's RGB, same as what an arcade machine uses. that's as good as a consumer tv's picture gets. (i believe component would be of equal quality, but i haven't personally owned a crt tv that supports that)

The reason why is the original pixel art was designed to have more details and shadows utilizing the crts modern problems (scanlines etc, lowres etc). However a crt emulator effect on an emulator could replicate this. More comfortable pc compatible controllers have also been built for each console, too. Its easy as fuck to load up an emulator game with a desktop shortcut. On pc you can also use reshade to add insanely impressive shaders applicable to every game. Emulators also give you more control of the game than any console (change framerates, custom resolution, add mods, etc)

What does this all mean? Pc is better than console, even for emulation.

it's pretty difficult to define what a pixel is on a crt. the definition of a pixel (picture element) is the small unit an image is made up of. because a crt line is a continuous analog signal, it's not made up of discrete parts. the number of lines is countable however, which is why crt resolution is usually only defined by line count (as in for example "480p").
however that doesn't mean a crt line is infinite resolution, there's only so much information you can put in one before they start to blur together, so you can quantify it in digital/discrete terms roughly, this is often done by displaying alternating vertical lines at higher resolutions until they are no longer visually separable, and the result is called TVL (television lines, not to be confused with horizontal line count.. i didn't invent this term)
note that even that isn't really perfectly fixed, it is affected by things like brightness and focus
