Do you guys hide your power level at work? I find that being competent just causes problems. Pisses off your seniors when you have to show them what to do, makes your peers standoffish and insecure because they think you make them look bad, and in 90% of cases your boss CAN'T promote you or give you a raise anyway, but they'll happily lean on you for everything anyway

Do you every just work a long shift and wonder what your deceased mother would think about what you are doing?

See, I'm an unlucky sort, my parents are blood related; first cousins. My mom would walk around our trailer park in cheap lingerie from goodwill. She taught me well enough, but she also made getting laid impossible. In high school I asked out my crush and she laughed that the inbred had a crush on her. I got rapped in the locker room by her brother later. My dad died from prostate cancer soon after my sister-cousin was born. I'm 38 years old, never had sex with a woman and working at a start up. He wants to jump from Java 6 to Java 21.
Shit's mad old.
There are no replacements for libraries.
And even if we crafted our own, "the architects" made such shit apis that they are shit to extend AND they leak the implementation, so you can't just replace the implementation behind the api, you have to go play whack a mole on the codebase.
Yet another case of Clean Code retards that should have kept it simple.

>not sure what you mean by "they leak the implementation"
You have a library called Apache POI, it does things with Excel.
To avoid importing it everywhere, you write a wrapper class ExcelWrapper. The methods it has are newPage, writeOnPage, saveFile, rather than apacheNewWorkbook, apacheWriteBytes, apacheSaveOutputStream.
You import ExcelWrapper from other places and you never see the Apache library, it is encapsulated.
Well, now you want to do writeOnPage(..., int extraFlags) to extend functionality. And rather than doing int extraFlags, they did writeOnPage(..., ApacheFlags extraFlags), so now you have to know about ApacheFlags and bring POI everywhere and make sure it's a POI version with valid ApacheFlags. You know what's behind the api, it leaked the implementation.
>can you use LLMs at work?
Yes, they use them.
>maybe that could help speed up things a bit
I have to clean their slop and it slows me.
>can you re-architect the whole thing?

There isn't a thread up right now, and I'm still technically employed until the end of the month so you have to deal with my presence in the thread until at least one of those things changes

Not worried about finding a job or getting interviews because I have worked at a household name even normies [non-tech men] know, and this job was at a company everyone in tech knows, or at least their flagship product

So I guess the plan is to apply to 30 jobs a day while doing a little neetcode and a little bit of actual learning too (I want to go through karpathy's lectures and the fast.ai course and learn how to build a GPT). But I'm assuming that actually getting an interview will come from reaching out personally and from my network. Either that or out-jeeting the competition with AI fleecing like hidden prompts with white text on white background etc

Alot smaller ceiling than programming but grand scheme of things pretty decent pay. Lower end jobs are have alot less responsibilities for the job but require more customer interaction. There are tons of fake job postings and numerous reason why they happen

1. Headcount signaling
They just want to keep getting budget, so they have the possibility to hire in the future

2. Talent pool farming
They are building talent databases so they can easily hire when they need someone

3. PR / investor optics
Some public or growth-stage companies want to look like they’re expanding.

4. Contract or funding dependency
Sometimes hiring is contingent on external approval
The role exists only if the deal closes β€” which might never happen.

5. Internal candidate or promotion in progress
The job is technically β€œopen,” but they already have someone in mind, a transfer or internal promotion.

6. Bureaucratic inertia
Nobody takes ownership of cleaning them up.
HR may not even realize half of them are outdated.

7. Benchmarking / salary research
Some firms post roles to see what salary expectations or skill profiles applicants have.
They’re collecting market intelligence, not actually hiring.

8. Hiring freezes mid-process
A team plans to hire, starts interviews, then gets hit by a freeze or reorg.
The posting remains because removing it would signal trouble publicly.

How many days have you been studying and have you used multiple sources? Generally certs are harder than college classes due to its thicker content you have to get through. If you are arrogant then the studying is going to take longer, you take it holistically then you will study in depth all of the subjects before focusing on pain points for the test. Then if everything is done right within 2-4 months you should be ready for a cert test after getting 80%+ on your tests.

I have a degree in bioinformatics but I don't know what job I am supposed to do with this degree.
Am I supposed to code the frontend and backend of apps? I used to do low level IT work but that dried up recently so I got fired. I have become one of you tech workers.

Whenever I search for bioinformatics jobs so I can leverage my background for a job, I don't find anything that looks like what I learnt in my degree, and the IT jobs I apply for don't want me because I didn't study computer science. And all the research jobs require PhDs and somehow bioinformatics is all research work at universities or at pharma companies who hire maybe 5 people a year for R and D.

Is this a useless degree? I was told 5 years ago that it was useful. But I became one of those who pivoted to tech jobs because they were easier to get and then got kicked out of them when their skill floor was raised. Now tech jobs only hire people who are senior programmers. Since my only programming skills are related to data analysis and because they're just academic then it's an issue.

HELP HELP HELP HELP

My company has a policy on metric based promotions.

Every 3 months, the lowest 30% are screened for dismissal, the highest 5% are screened for promotion, and the highest 10% get automatic contract extensions with double inflation wages.

I have spent 3 years happily sitting in the top 10% but not top 5%, the performance metrics are available to create competition. I work night shift, so I go to work, clock in, and am left alone all night. It's been great.

On Friday I was called in to a meeting to discuss my metrics. They changed the algorithm to take into account ticket difficulty and if it actually solved the problem, escalated it correctly, or was just a temporary work around. And they are applying it retroactively. Instead of being in the top 10%, I've been in the top 2% every quarter for three years. And now they are promoting me to management, I'll be on a different floor, during the day, during business hours, with a team of 30 people managing projects.

I am massively autistic, i have panic attacks when i order food from a real person, i deliberately avoid all conversation and interaction with people. Sometimes I go weeks without talking to anyone outside of tech support calls. People do not like me, they find me creepy and weird. There are WOMEN up there, The only woman i've spoken to in over a year that isn't immediate family is my landlord who is 60 something and asks me to feed her hairless cat when she goes on majong cruises.

I can't turn it down, they say I'm being underutilized and it's not an option to leave me "languishing" in tech support.

Calm down. You are in control of you. Realize that you will never be forced to do anything without agreeing to do it and then doing it. Simply state that you will not perform a management role because you are not comfortable performing a management role. You like the night shift. You are an introvert. You like your current role and are keeping your current role. If they want to change your title and pay you more money, sure they can do that, but you will continue to do the same role you are doing. Then tell them "I am sorry, I am not trying to be difficult, but I will not be promoted to a management role because after much self-reflection I am not comfortable with it, and I do not wish to be setup for failure. I am sorry. Is there anything else? If not I will be going back to my desk now, I need to stay on top of these tickets so that I can continue to do a good job at my current job." Then wait for 10 seconds. Then get up and go back to what you've always done.

There are three reasons why we recommend ending your resume with a single-line "Interests:" bullet point underneath "Skills:"

1. Interests force the screener to see you as a human, and not just one of the thousands of faceless resumes they see every single day.

2. Interests allow the screener to visualize you as a coworker / understand if you're the type of person they'd want to spend time with every day. 40 hours a week for years on end is a LOT of time to spend with another human being – your coworkers influence your mental health more than anyone. Interests show them that you're fun to spend time with, or at least that you're not a psycho loser.

3. Interests are perfect icebreakers for the interview, which will help it go more smoothly (and therefore give you a better chance of getting a second one). If you put Seinfeld as an interest, we guarantee you that every single interviewer over the age of 35 will open by asking you what your favorite episode is. (Mine is The Marine Biologist.)

You should be grinding personal projects to please yourself. A venn diagram of what i do for 'work' and as a hobby would be a perfect circle and some employers like to see that since it shows that not only are you good at it, but you enjoy it enough to do it in your personal time

Both my boss and my bosses boss interviewed me and both specifically asked me "on a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your skills" and I told them "6" because im knowledgable enough to know what i know, but also self-aware about what i dont know which is a negating factor.

I'm in Big 4 and I'm in a unique situation where I've got my bosses by the balls. There's been plenty of misunderstandings and basically, I heard from a very friendly higher-up that they could not afford to lose a single person from the project.
I applied for a Junior position, got a Mid title and eventually it turned out that my responsibilities were that of a Senior or even Team Lead (before you roll your eyes - do Juniors/Mids mentor other Juniors and take care of them, create frameworks for learning a completely new system, have full ownership over a crucial department of a system etc?). The rotation is also up the ass. These are the two main points I brought up when telling my boss that I wanted a serious raise. He will tell my arguments to his boss.
Anons, how do I take advantage of this and squeeze all the juice out of the lemons? I think I've got a pretty big chance here. I would like a Senior-level salary and maybe a promotion. What do I say? I've got plenty of other supporting arguments, like doing two weeks' worth of work in 2 days, but I'm guessing those two are the most important. Thanks!

i mean you already asked for a "serious raise" so there's nothing much you can do here other than pestering your boss about it every day

Cool! Well, that's what the local director himself said, so I think my position is actually quite good, surprisingly. I'm really surprised at all of this. Even finding a replacement would be very hard, as we are working with a technology so niche I bet 99% of /g/ has never heard of it. Thanks, anon! I'm new to corpo games. I said I wanted a "serious raise", because I kind of sort of got one already, but it's peanuts and it's a way to lower the taxes paid and not an actual salary increase, but I'm just giving some more context here. Thanks a lot!

What is a "crucial department of a system" exactly? But I'm going to go with yes. You've been too vague for me to be sure.
It all depends on what your organization considers a senior level's responsibilities to be though. Maybe you should compare yourself to what others at that level are doing.
