An LLM's pretraining objective is "predict how this arbitrary piece of text continues". This makes the base models into amazing chameleons, capable of picking up subtle nuances of tone and setting with just a few sentences and then continuing on from there.

That capability is then almost completely obliterated by Assistant / instruct-training, which teaches the LLM that one, all text is actually part of a conversation between a user and the "Assistant" persona, and two, the Assistant writes in a certain way.

No matter how you prompt the model, it will still have this bias baked in to some degree.
