Yes, I do operate a VPS as well, but I only spend like 3$/month, so 100-200x the amount should be doable for serving static files, even at a high volume (terabytes of traffic/day). It's not like you're resolving complex database queries for hundreds or thousands of clients at once.

Image hosts can be petabytes a day. A single 2MB image posted on social media that goes viral can be viewed over a million times in the span of a few hours. That's several Terabytes right there for a single image.

Catbox lets you upload stupidly large images and general files. I've seen dumps of 100+MB raws that totaled over 10GB. Even a hundred people downloading that is a TB. If 5,000 do it, that's 50TB.

I imagine its pretty accurate for the performance and the fact its hosting a lot of user content which means both a lot of bandwidth and storage. There's also probably a lot of other services too to deal with DDoS attempts or CP or whatever the fuck else.

Yes, for a warm storage service like that the cheapest way is probably home hosting.
You would want as many SATA ports and disks as you can get for the cheapest price. And then power off all the drives except for the ones with the files being accessed. And you would also want to keep the files sorted by access frequency, so you would have a set of disks that are on 24/7 for frequently accessed files, a set of disks which turn on and off a few times a day, and a set of disks which are almost always turned off except when the system boots or for a SMART test, or for the rare occasion that the files they contain are actually accessed.
And you would probably also want to do striping with generous ECC, so you don't have to fully duplicate the data but still can survive losing some drives without losing data.

Colocation is expensive, yes.
I considered putting my NAS in a datacenter.
Can't remember exactly but I think the cheapest option in my area was something like $150/month for a "cage" (to put a consumer grade NAS in).
$1k/month for half a rack or a quarter of a rack wouldn't shock me.

I don't see cost for internet but I assume it's part of the "colocation".
Normally when you rent a server you have to pay per TB of transferred data (after a small starter amount you get for "free").
Your VPS won't have much traffic but a video site will obviously need massive amounts of data.

Unfortunately due to the overall design and popularity of the internet, it is now very expensive to actually host a publicly accessible image, way more expensive than it used to be prior to 2010, and AI is only making this worse because algos are constantly scraping any publicly hosted media content constantly, over and over and over again.
