Anon finds SECRET HIDDEN USB and SD
I run a cleaning business that specializes in clearing out derelict properties. Today we were deep in an abandoned flat's basement in Rotterdam.

Behind a desk drawer, I found a clean USB stick. And Two SD cards were also on the floor nearby. To be precized they where near a closet. We want to return them, but my wife is screaming "VIRUS!"

The question: Is it safe to plug this into my main computer, or is this a textbook example of a shady usb. i have absolutly no experience in Tech stuff and my wife watched Mr.Robot and thats really it.

Need advice on the SAFEST way to check these without F-ing something up.

PS:
i am not a very well english writer i used AI to write this and added some sentences my self. I am very sorry for this. I also made a picture i dont know why but they look so clean.

I'd say its pretty safe considering where you found it but there's always a non-zero chance its malicious. You could find a public library/computer to check whats on it before using it on your main PC.

>Really nothing to it.
The fuck you mean, Anon?

Quick ChatGPT analysis;
The .txt content contains real Latin phrases mixed with invented/coded words:

Clear Latin: Porta Mortis (gate/door of death), Clavis Portae Mortis (key of the gate of death), MorsAperitPortam (death opens the gate).

Non-Latin / suspicious tokens: Zodum, Zodacar, Vovim, BUSDIRDEOL95, and numeric sequences 754 & 321 (and their reversal).

The other files show exact sizes that stand out:

4,194,304 bytes (exactly 4 × 10242 = 4 MiB)

2,097,152 bytes (exactly 2 × 10242 = 2 MiB)

Exact power-of-two sizes usually mean files are padded, generated, or are binary blobs/containers — not typical for real video files, which rarely hit perfect MiB boundaries.

Filenames and content: Clavis = key in Latin. Someone naming a file “Clavis Thil.txt” suggests that file is meant as a key/clue, not ordinary notes.

as a teen my friends and I found an usb stick at a festival.
This was ca. 2006/07.
Stick was full of porn. Mostly regular porn and some beastiality (Women fucked by a Pig in 144p). Highlight was a Porn version of Pirates of the Caribbean.
So my bet is:
It is eigher porn (97%), something cool (1%) or broken (2%).

>He finds the file sizes weird
nothing really weird about it. most likely, the files were created in a virtualized environment and the files are either drive or memory images
1995 is a common placeholder date, and 4gb is commonly a limit of 32bit addressing.
Can't explain the text file but I think most likely explanation is the usb stick may contain a firmware update for some other device. You might be able to analyze the files with a hex editor an hopefully find some header or meta data that indicates what kind of files they are. I think the chances that it's something valuable are pretty low.

The modified date is broken from something, the size is because fat32 has a 4GB limit on filesizes. Why would someone upload 4GB of random data? well if you check the headers they'll be encrypted filesystems. Why would someone hide a USB full of encrypted data? uh oh

Boot Tails and don't connect to the internet
there is a chance the USB is a BadUSB meant to destroy your USB port, but that's a small chance. The SD cards are safe to insert, hardware-wise thougg

OP he My friend told me the same. i finished work a couple hours back. found nothing intrestng there. Even he thinks its just a guy that maybe downlaoded illegal movies. im trying tomorrow with gemini to do a hex editor and see what happens. Its just a mysterious txt file nothing to it. i found desu in a different room a cabinet that was destroyed and trashed so there is a possibilty that someone tresspassed and dropped it by accident. Or a different theory that someone was photographing there and dropped the SD cards. There are a lot of logical explenations now.

You need to change permissions on a file to make it executable in Linux. Download PhotoRec to recover deleted files.

The text file might contain passwords for the respective files if they are encrypted....kinda defeats the purpose of having both the file and password on the same drive but who knows.
Since they are all 16gb, drives were probably last used ~15 years ago or less. You could cross-reference that with the property to identify the potential owner, and if they are in a specific field of work, that may indicate the nature of software used. I'm going off the assumption that the drive is boring work-related stuff since that is the most likely scenario.
But if the data is illegal for you to possess, you should really just give it to law enforcement and detach yourself from it. Illegal could be nasty pictures but it could also be customer data/medical records, etc.

SD cards are the shittiest storage format in history. powered off for a long period of time they just corrupt.
you might be able to still read the file table, but the data is toast.
