/eg/ - Enshittification General
ITT discussions and evidence of the enshittification of technology.
The obvious example of yesterday's AWS outage is very in your face but I feel the normies have no idea things are getting worse until the AI (actually Indians) accidentally push some bad DNS configs and fuck up every service on the East coast.
But if they only knew about the things quietly breaking and getting worse over time.
Recently I've noticed Google maps giving increasingly braindead navigation instructions. Following them adds 10 minutes to the time estimate. Ignoring them and just taking the interstate has me arrive 5 minutes earlier.
A 15 minute differential on a 30 minute commute is wild. How bad do things need to get before they stop outsourcing literally everything?

people whining whenever google tries to make youtube in any way profitable is entitled beyond belief. people speak as if google are evil for "making" you watch ads to use their service that is incredibly expensive to run and delivers tons of value to the user
stuff costs money. if you want good stuff you have to pay for it. YT premium is a steal, but people talk about paying for it as being also bad somehow. they dont want to watch ads, they dont want to pay. They just want free stuff.

the fault is on google since they switched the platform to being such a mess allowing infinite uploads of trash content for free.
youtube used to have a 10 minute upload limit, and it was probably profitable back then before google bought it out.
now theyve made it so trashy you need to as you say purchase some addon to make it useable.

I went to visit my parents in Belgium last week, and my dad told me that Apple Maps has gained a mysterious new suburb near where I grew up. It turns out it's the wrong name, and while that place does exist, it's near Overijssel in Holland while we are in Overijse in Belgium. The town is literally in the wrong country on Apple Maps. Someone is going to try and go there and really get very fucking lost.
Unrelated but why isn't Google using their AI bullshit to help Google Maps learn your particular route over time? When I first started college in August, my father and I would take a certain special route so I'd avoid problem spots (even though it'd take longer). When I started driving by myself and still needed Google Maps for school, it never learned my exact special pattern that I used for over 5 times. It'd be really neat.
The rate at which things are getting worse is not at all affected by AI, as much as your pseudointellectual nocode circlejerk cult will have you believe otherwise.
Things had sovl when people made them for fun, things are shit when they are made for money.
Not unique to technology at all either, look at the fucking state of the arts.

It sucks because the original Doctorow blog post and its follow-ups had an interesting point about an economic process by which great customer-centric companies are ruined by self-dealing and advertising. Unfortunately the term was too emotionally evocative and people just started applying it to anything they didn't like. Including "companies charging money for stuff" which if anything is the opposite of enshittification.

AI is being pushed everywhere. Search results often now have an AI summary at the top, YouTube videos have an AI summary, AI embedded in your applications and even the OS itself (Windows), most of the new updates for Android and iOS are all AI stuff, AI assistants when you apply for a job, whole devices based on just having AI, and the list goes on. Cheaper and flashier to install these AI systems than actually implement useful functionality.

Something I try to point out to people is how much consumer standards and expectations have been lowered. Not just in tech, but in general. It used to be if you were a customer, no matter what business, they'd roll out the red carpet for you, providing extra amenities free of charge to try and get and keep your business. But then companies realized they can treat you like shit and you'll still give them your business. Karens get a lot of shit, but something people gloss over is that most of them were alive during the glory days when standards were better. I don't lose my shit in public, but I do have sympathy for Karen's because the world has moved past them, and not to a better place

Customer support is a great example of something that was kneecapped by the coof. I've heard "Call volumes are higher than expected" then waited on hold at every single customer support number I have called since 2020. Then you get sent to either Laqueesha or Sanjay, neither of whom can speak English or have the critical thinking power to deviate from the script in front of them when trying to address your problem.

Rolling that bad change out to am entire region and fucking your companies reputation to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars in a single day is far more than a simple oversight. It implies there are no guardrails for preventing things like this.
Worse yet it shows that fuck ups are only caught when they burn the entire building down. Just imagine how much jank is under the hood that isn't big enough to cause a global stink and is just mildly inconvenient so they call it a p3 and move on. Now imagine that every team at Amazon has at least a dozen of those. And the iceberg is even bigger for the ones that customers haven't reported yet. It's fucked.

I have a problem with this meta in industries with strong network effects. First you kill all competition by giving away something very expensive away for free and then, because normies are basically nigger-cattle, you are free to enshittify to your hearts content.
This strategy is only possible if you have infinite money and is therefore anticompetitive.

Don't forget the demographics. 2006 was before the smartphone put easy internet access in the hands of every normie, woman and ESL/thirdie. It was also before social media encouraged tearing down the barrier between IRL and internet and rewarded you for being an obnoxious attention whore. Unique websites also existed back then instead of 90% of internet traffic being funneled into a handful of corporate walled gardens.
Improved speed and reliability is really the only advantage the modern internet has over 20+ years ago. That would have been an amazing upgrade with the quality of the old internet, but better speed and reliability now just means more efficient ways to spread advertising and AI slop and scams and social media garbage.

People keep all of their videos private and just use it as a free SSD. Alphabet did it to themselves by losing billions just to have a monopoly. There is literally no viable alternative or competitor to Youtube. There are a few similar sites, but they have almost no users and they don't give you a fraction of what Youtube gives you for free.

Cloud was always fragile. If [cheese pizza] hunting algorithms didn't falsely accuse you of stashing illegal content and screw you over forever, Rakesh or Pajit at the data center hosting your stuff might screw something up by accident and all your stuff goes poof. Or lazy programmers code something a little wrong, try implementing it as an update or whatever for the backend software at the data center, and then your stuff goes poof. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR LOCAL PHYSICAL BACKUPS. USB HDDs and SSDs are your best buddies in this topic. Now, Cloud services are still viable and quite convenient, but should never be your main backup or you will regret it eventually, unless you get super lucky.

Backups are full copies of data. RAID does not make full copies of data, it creates duplicate blocks of data between multiple drives to survive failure of one or more drives.
If you delete a file on a raid array you cannot get it back. If you delete a file you copied to another disk you can get it back.
RAID1 is the closest to a backup because you can turn a complete RAID1 array into two broken RAID1 arrays. But you need data in two separate locations to have a backup so a complete RAID1 is not a backup.

>Backups are full copies of data.
Is the totality of a RAID array not a full copy of the data?
>RAID does not make full copies of data, it creates duplicate blocks of data between multiple drives to survive failure of one or more drives.
The process of RAID being able to rebuild a failed drive is, to me, a backup. You're backing up the drives themselves. Opposed to a single hard drive which can not replicate itself if it fails. This is is normally referred to as redundant, although that does not make sense by definition. Redundant SHOULD mean that there's an entire second RAID array that can step up and take place if the first array suffers degradation. Such as if a drive dies and needs to be rebuilt, that does cause significant degradation.
Nothing about the definition of backup mandates that it has to be offline. Many backups are online 24/7.
>If you delete a file on a raid array you cannot get it back. If you delete a file you copied to another disk you can get it back.
That's why there should be multiple backups. This is true of any backup method. Or even better, some sort of versioning.
tl;dr the common consensus about RAID has definitions mixed up pretty badly. RAID is a backup, but still you should NOT have only 1 backup.

The idea is that Google crowd sources real time traffic data so it's not just remembering the route, it's SUPPOSED to suggest the quickest route based on real time traffic. But like several people have mentioned, it routinely suggests what is objectively an incorrect and slower route.

the issue from the opposition is that they have a tendency to exaggerate how big of an issue the "Update" really is and go outside of factual and objective stuff and into preferences and opinions. They usually try to disguise it as facts but its extremely obvious from the other side when a person is just ranting without any objective or factual reason
if only people stayed factual and objective and didnt exaggerate potentially small issues then it would be a lot harder to defend bad decisions and easier to properly discuss potential solutions..

Eventually AI will hit an energy wall and the software systems our world sits on will shut down. I imagine the world will get self driving cars adopted but then a decade or so later it will all go up in flames from bad software. But by then people with manual driving skills will be rare. >Is the totality of a RAID array not a full copy of the data?
No the totality of a RAID array is a single unit of data. That's why I gave explanations of RAID1 and RAID10 being the only quasi-backup format because it can be split to create TWO arrays for TWO copies of the data. There is no complete RAID array that can be classified as a backup.
>The process of RAID being able to rebuild a failed drive is, to me, a backup
Your definition doesn't matter. I can recreate a recipe from scratch using my memory, but I still don't have a backup of the recipe. A backup would be a second fully documented version of the recipe.
>That's why there should be multiple backups. This is true of any backup method. Or even better, some sort of versioning.
So RAID is a backup, but it only works if there's multiple arrays with the same data in it (possibly with versioning). Therefore second copies of data is the true backup, you cannot have a backup with a single RAID array.

I had this too doing delivery for construction, often the maps didn't have the address yet.
I think mapping should really be nationalized. Every municipality/state already files paperwork for new addresses, construction, etc. Add all of this data to a map along with things like road weight limits and make the data available to everyone. Then people can build their specialized applications on top with always up-to-date data. E.g. routing that accounts for your truck's weight and weight limits, or height limits.
