No, the grift started when retards fell for the 'heated mattresses' faggotry. Then people realized that managing temperature on your own was a PITA and started buying those 'AI powered self heating' types, then 'prepares your bed before your sleep' types and so on.
All started with literal genetic dead ends who couldn't bear the cold and would've died of hypothermia at 5 in any other point in history.

>the company wants you to pay a subscription for anything more than basic functionality
And it's even worse if the device expects to be able to use the internet itself. Why boomers and retards just put up with paying to be exploited like this, I'll never know.

Common sense would be for it to not have any Internet connection at all. Features like warming, inclining, etc... Should be controlled by buttons on the bed itself, or via a remote control, or at most via a phone app controlled over Bluetooth. If desired functionality can be performed without an Internet connection, it should be performed without an Internet connection. Otherwise your bed is a free DDoS bot for any hacker who wants it.

yes but he does a poor job at defining exactly what he means by technology and isn't able to concisely describe a thing that makes tech directly good or bad. if anything that disrupts the power process is bad, then there are thousands of things we would not define as technology, or as part of industrialization, that would still fit in that box. the whole paper is the freaked scrawlings of a dude who feels powerless to the change and disruptions happening around him that are beyond his control, and instead of simply accepting that the world changes he decides anything that changes the world is inherently evil. plenty of his ideas are sound and very agreeable but he fails to adequately defend the thesis.

So this hit one of my companies competitors. They provide Sleep8 (the mattress) with the biomarker data from wearables.
It was a pretty big outage across the space.
My company had delayed responses for the behavioural insights from biomarkers that we extract from phones and wearables but at least we are more robust at retaining it. We provide the backend webhooks and API for these systems.

One of my friends actually has one of these mattresses. It seems astounding to me that someone would pay 6k Dollarydoos and then she has to cop a 30$ a month subscription to sleep on it.

Yeah it's pretty retarded.
I don't think there is a family plan either.
Imagine having 4 beds in your house that you spend 24k on and then you have to spend $120 a month for everyone to sleep on them.
This is AUD though (it's 1 USD to 1.5 Dollarydoo)

So cool to live in the future with subscription beds.

It's mostly people who dont know better.
No one goes out of their way to find bullshit that requires a remote server to operate.
It's just when you buy expensive things, you get that overengineered bullshit that requires a server and you just dont think about it until it's fucked.

If anything, reasonable people would assume that two devices on the same network would communicate directly and something that can connect to the internet should be powerful enough to keep track of time and apply whatever schedule you set for it by itself.

There is a reason IoT devices are made this way tho. You can never guarantee network conditions. Can two devices on the same wifi network communicate? They might not due to any number of things like client isolation. About the only thing you can guarantee is a gateway where you can make an outbound connection.
Since a remote server covers 100% of use cases. There is little incentive to for p2p communication on the off chance the server is down.

Why pay a machinist 30 dollars an hour to torque spec stuff when you can hire 2 dropouts with GEDs part time (no benefits) for minimum wage to do the same job and have them scrub the toilets at the end of the day because they're retarded enough to do it unquestioningly without being provided PPE? If you actually need the trained personnel for something, you can hire 1 of them instead of 2 or 3, allocate them more efficiently, and hire a few dipshits to do other stuff.

Even if you're not cutting labor costs, these things pay for themselves the first time they prevent someone from fucking up an $800,000 dollar piece of equipment with a $200,000 repair bill because of a bad torque spec.

>>106973626
Yeah, these things are pretty useful. They should get sandboxed into their own vlan in any company with any sense.... which unfortunately is almost none of them, but greybeards understanding internet security is a whole other conversation.

how would this work without a central server?
for real
for the normies
do you have to have an always on PC that is managing the bed?
do you need to have a managed router?
does the bed need its own embedded PC that needs to be configured to your home ISP equipment so you could use a phone app to operate it?
does the bed only work when it can connect to your phone via BT?
What of you are using a BT speaker on your phone, does that mean you cant use your bed?
should the bed maker include a single use tablet like device?
should the bed go back to using a physical control panel that is a PITA to program and use?

srsly, what is the alternative solution for normies who cant be bothered with any of that?
