guy who also made an isekai card and uses lorebooks here. yes, it is much more token efficient. when you have a trillion instructions to follow, LLMs tend to start getting selective about following certain things, or they get rigid. either way, having instructions for every little situation being constantly sent to the AI can make it more difficult for it to follow the more important instructions, and maintain coherence.

basically, if it doesn't need to be constantly known by the AI, it can (and probably should) be a lorebook entry. you can get very creative with these. instead of thinking about it as lore, think about each of these lorebook entries as instructions with triggers. i would urge you to play around with them yourself and maybe read the world info section on sillytaverns docs.

This is a manipulative release date since all the big models got major improvements this year. Do you have any tips for writing a lorebook, or like writing the lore in a more concise, compact manner?
For example, I only go into culture a bit - people are rough around the edges, but not outright evil, though they will be wary and suspicious and wary of strangers. They have their own lore and names for anomalies and monsters, campfire stories to scare newbies and other folklore. etc etc That's basically the extent of culture.
Then there's descriptions of anomalies - that's the main bulk of tokens
Then the organizations and POI
Scavenger economy - maybe around 1000 tokens - guess I gotta clean up
about 700 tokens on food cultivation, farms, and how they feed monsters and bandits to pigs to raise them
then there's the main girl, which is maybe 600 tokens
overall, that's somehow around 8-10k

I like markdown, but any way that you can communicate information without full sentences in an organized way will work. Markdown is nice because it's intuitive, LLMs get it, and different types of organization like paragraphs, lists, headers etc. are expected in the format.

In terms of what you've mentioned, I would say folklore, specific monster info, specific anomaly info, specific economic info, food cultivation, farms, and related things can all be separated into lorebook entries. It also gives you a way to connect relevant info together and give it a spotlight when it's relevant and let the AI not think about it when it's not.

It's probably because most of the character cards I've seen were +2000 tokens, which means not everyone can run them without memory limits or the model forgetting a few details if they're under 100b. Not to mention not every model is trained for +6000 tokens of instructions. Most faggots are under 30b with limited memory. We can't use anything for 5000 token character cards. So they get told they suck, and they banter, and now they're all gone.
