Laptops are useless
Why do people use laptops instead of desktops? Muh portability, but where do you even go with your laptop? It's inappropriate to take it with you in social situations (not that any of you have any) and inconvenient enough to take out as it provides no use case for lugging it.

First of all this board has been dead for a very long time. Second, where do you go ((outside)) where you have any use for a laptop?

>>106998641
Even in bed it's inconvenient, tablet is clearly a superior choice.

The ergonomics on laptops are dogshit unfortunately. Unless you hook them up to a proper monitor your neck will go sore in five minutues and at that point you might aswell get a desktop PC.

I have used 12.5, 13, 14, 15.6, 16 inch laptops and they all suck. The bigger ones are usually very heavy so and bulky so carrying them is not practical, while the small ones provide no performance so for most use cases it's just better to use a phone as the tasks that you can achieve on them is limited. Even if we ignore this, I never feel comfortable looking at the small screen. Maybe I've been spoiled by an ultrawide monitor but staring at a small screen and rubbing that trackpad is very slow and painful. After a while you start getting annoyed and you plug in the keyboard and mouse and eventually you plug in the display in as well. Turning that portable machine into the opposite. The ergonomics are doomed, no matter how you make it, it's always gonna be better to use a fixed screen and a real keyboard and mouse.

Do people really? Never have I seen anyone use it on a bus, then again, it's been almost a decade since I went anywhere with a bus.

>work from home, to client
Work doesn't count, at work you are a slave and you do as you are told, ITT it's about the private usage.

There are a lot of things you can do that are not CPU or GPU intensive. In fact, it is likely you aren't doing anything terribly CPU or GPU intensive on your PC right now.

I can upgrade that.

How do you back up your desktop storage without network or dongles? Removing the drive? Adding another internal drive temporarily?

Extremely fair point, but I'm not going to take a mechanical keyboard out with me. It weighs more than twice my laptop.

Trucker here

Most of us use them, my laptops have been in all 48 states. I have one for gaming I use and one for insane battery life and raw processing power. They have a lot of advantages for someone like me who travels from state to state.

If you aren't traveling much, you have no need for these. Yes you could theoretically set up a desktop and have a mobile gaming setup like we did in our LAN party days, a decent laptop will do 90 percent of everything a similarly-equipped desktop would do and it fits in a briefcase and I can set it up in 30 seconds.

>>106999021

My gaming laptop has survived 5 years and doesn't do any of those things. It has lived long enough for me to have to upgrade soon, but I have too many good memories on it and all the cool shit I did with it so I'll hold onto it a little longer.

If I travel, I still need to be able to work.
Excel, code, IT shit, design, cad files, etc.
I can't do those in a tablet, if I tried a bigger tablet that could do that, I'd take a keyboard, and at that point why not just take the laptop.
It's not like I take it everywhere with me. It usually sits in the desk working as a hooked up pc. On weekends I take it home, so if anything needs to be done I don't need to go the office. Whenever we travel for work, I also take it and do things.

It's not hard to justify a laptop when you're not a neet.

I agree with you 100%. Laptops were a mistake. And so are tablets and smartphones.
Computing should be a sacred thing (no, really) that should be confined to its own altar, aka the desktop. That way normie sloppers wouldn't ruin it so much.

Laptop is slave mentality. Desktop implies dedicated space. Wealth. Property. Ownership. A space for the human to be treated to a superior computing experience.

I work from home. Occasionally I need to work from other place, like office, datacenter or kitchen. I can move it anywhere in the house, do anything else besides work and respond immediately if anything happens. I also have a tablet and can use rdp/parsec whatever to connect to the laptop, but for any real work, it's not enough. They are just tools and need to be used appropriately.

I used to have an Inspiron 8000.
It was built like a tank and it had everything I wanted in a computer, floppy drive, dvd/cd swappable, 32 mb Geforce2, good LCD, 512mb ram and 40 gigs Hard-drive with all the ports you could possibly want plus two pc slots and ethernet...man laptops used to be the coolest shit ever.

Sadly it's long gone, the only laptop that I have from that time is my dad's C610 with loose hinges and dead usb ports, still functional but might not be when the battery leaks eventually...
