I'm eyeing a used T14 G4 or T14 G2 (both with i5s) in my area (as there are no T14 G3s). What difference does the 16:10 screen make? If I got the T14 G2, could I mod a 16:10 display into it?
Performance wont be an issue with either one for me, so the price, display and warranty (which the G4 still has, but the G2 doesnt) are the key fectors
G4 (open-box, almost new) is about 40% more expensive than the G2 (moderately used) + a new battery.

Anyone here have an E16 model?
I plan to buy the Thinkpad E16 Gen 3 with 2k display.

which specific one did you buy? if you bought an E series model then you're retarded and you should never be allowed to handle money ever again
E series only managed to become somewhat decent relatively recently, before that they were always objectively worse to their other counterparts. Basically rebranded Ideapads.
if you bought L/T series (preferably T) then I don't think there's much you need to worry about. My T480 gets decent battery life on Linux, very similar to the one I get on Windows. remember to install tlp though, that's crucial

I have the same one and there's two main warts. The trackpoint is ever so slightly laggy, not noticeable if you just push it around aimlessly but enough to be less accurate at hitting buttons. And the CPU frequency scaling isn't as responsive as on Windows and by default doesn't go below 1.4 GHz. There's workarounds for these that make it good enough for my use case.

Kill the faggot nigger Linus Torvalds. My Thinkpad had a kernel bug where the network card kept crashing and killing my WiFi connection a month or two ago, and after three or four kernel updates, it worked again and I was happy. Last night, I updated to Fedora 43, and now the fucking laptop won't boot or let me boot into an old kernel. I can still dual-boot into Windows 10 (last updated 2017), but it's horrible and I want Fedora back. Why is Linux so shit? And why do they hate Thinkpads specifically?

I just noticed my T480 is now drawing from the internal battery before the external. After having researched the problem it seems that this is a firmware issue that causes the laptop to automatically draw first from the battery it detects is healthier. The last time I looked, the internal was at about 70% capacity and the external was at about 76%. This was several months ago. Now for some reason they have flipped and the internal is reading 80% and the external at 70%. Is there any way to force it to draw from the external first?

Undervolting doesn't actually do anything. I used to have a t460s that I undervolted -100mV on the core (any more and it would be unstable). I didn't see any statistically significant difference in power usage at idle or at full load even though the VIDs went down.
Now I have a t460 and an 8th gen NUC, neither of them can be undervolted by more than like -10mV before random shit starts breaking or it freezes for no reason or bluescreens.
Undervolting and overclocking are both fucking memes that I fell for and you gain like 5% AT BEST while also getting instability to go along with it.
>>107038379
my t460 came with the 72Wh battery at 85% health, and the battery life is pretty fucking awesome compared to my old laptop. I get about 7 hours normal usage running Windows 7 (i.e. web browsing, coding or watching videos). You can even put in an extra internal 24Wh battery to this thing but I'd rather not due to really horrible experience with chinknovo's dual battery firmware implementation in my t460s which I ultimately just scrapped. fuck internal batteries, fuck the powerbridge nonsense.

do the Alder Lake (12th gen) and Raptor Lake (13th gen) T14s (plural) have battery life as bad as people on reddit seem to claim? AMD models are pretty much impossible to find in my area except when they cost twice as much as Intel models.
If they really are that bad, are E14 and L14 as much of a downgrade compared to the T series? plenty of Ryzen E and L models available near me, but no AMD T14.
I am going to do some mid to light web browsing (about 5 to 15 tabs), with maybe a youtube tab running and a couple of PDFs, lots of libreoffice writer and calc, and audio recording, and I would like it to, hopefully, last a full 8h shift or as close to it as possible. Is this achievable on any used T, L or E series thinkpad or would I have to succumb to getting a mac?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Step up to a quad-core T480 and you'll easily gain 15% all-core performance at 15W. You'll also get at least 1 extra hour of battery life, more if it's a 72Wh battery.
Undervolting a P52 with its 8th Gen Coffee Lake processor literally gives you up to 40% better all-core performance at 10W, thanks to how absolutely trash Coffee Lake is, since it can be undervolted to -140mV on Core+Cache and to -170mV on iGPU+iGPU Unslice.

On my laptop I just made a keyboard shortcut that plays the youtube URL in the clipboard in MPV, due to the lower power consumption of this player (with appropriate hardware decoding) compared to the Jeetware that google put into youtube.com. Since all I need to do is right click, copy link address and then press the keybind, it's pretty convenient too.

Are there any cheap ThinkPads that are gaming-capable to at least some extent? I mean those that can be bought used ofc cuz I'm broke. I heard that those with AMDs have good enough APUs to run some modern games. I mostly plan to play stuff like M&B Bannerlord and autistic PDX map games like upcoming EU5. 60 FPS with low in FHD is good enough for me.
The reason I go to ThinkPads is because I'll mainly use it for dev stuff so CPU is a priority. Ofc gaming laptop sounds nice and I have seen some used with 3050 (ti) in my budget frame but CPUs there are not so good, you pay for GPU mostly.
And I hate tranny LEDs everywhere but not a dealbreaker.

Can you name an example of what is "good CPU". Not a big expert, friend has R7 4800N with GTX 1660 Ti and reported that even with igpu performance in above mentioned Bannerlord is good on middle. But that is a gayming laptop with better cooling I'd presume. So will something like i7-1185g7 in T14 be at least close?
I can't buy latest new one with best CPU option and only really looking at used ones.

I wouldn't say "no reason". You get marginally but progressively better GPUs and optional oem ips 1080p screens as the years go by. You do get chassis flex issues, of course the keyboard gets progressively worse, (half) soldered single channel RAM, but the X280 is nothing to write home about in that respect either - you just get 4 cores instead of 2.
Basically if you're not going to do the classic keyboard swap, leave the X230 in the dustbin of history.
>>107068619
Given the available info, the T14G2 AMD should carry you a long time.
Nobody ever mentions what screen though. That could make or break a decision for me. You're going to have to stare at this fucking thing for hours on end. Don't cheap out on the display. I'd opt for a shittier machine if the display didn't give me eye cancer.

Setting battery thresholds like even 20-80% help the battery live longer. Lithium cells don't like being over-discharged or cooked, even with their """smart""" charging chips that are supposed to manage the cells. There's science to it, it's not old wives tale or /tpg/ voodoo.

Out of curiosity, is there any way to actually salvage these batteries or some kind of method I can try to see if I can somehow kickstart them back to life? I know it's a long shot, but it's a waste that these two batteries have basically died, so I am hoping I can try to do something before I resort to buying a new one.

Not really, unless you're super-handy and have a lot of time on your hands. People have re-celled batteries in the past but cutting them open, keeping the charging chips "alive" on bench power while you swap cells (and solder tabs to lithium cells) can be...dicey if you don't know what you're doing.
Me personally, I'd bite the bullet and buy a new battery. Too much trouble when they're still being produced.
But start this one off right and set your charging thresholds right away. There are various utilities to do this depending on your OS.

I see, I was hoping it would be something involving needing to just do some kind of power cycle or something just in case it wasn't fully dead, but it seems that it's probably not the case. Was worth a shot anyways.
>Me personally, I'd bite the bullet and buy a new battery. Too much trouble when they're still being produced.
Alright will do, I'll stick with the T420 until I find the next opportunity to get another T430 one, but I need to figure out if I should use another Lenovo model one or try my luck again with Green Cell.

"tlp" or "python3-thinkpad-tools" for Fedora, it appears. Either of them should let you set battery charge thresholds and some other useful Thinkpad related settings.
Real OEM Lenovo batteries would cost a fortune. Don't believe it's an actual Lenovo battery (or pay a premium for it) just because it has a sticker on it that says so. Any Xi Dingdong with a printer can make a label that says Lenovo. Greencell is a decent 3rd party battery company. The one that usually gets recommended around here is KingSener. Good luck.
X220 just arrived.
I already own a X201 and a X230. The X220 is truly the best of both worlds. I fucking love this shit.
