You cherry picked one of the most absurd examples. There was an Acer copy of this machine recently on sale for 279 (full price 399, I think). Still too much for 8gb of ram though. And a 16gb CB will cost about as much as a MacBook, yes. Still cheaper than a Linux laptop from system76 or whoever.

Don't forget build quality. Those late intel macbooks had the worst issues on an Apple laptop since the titanium powerbook days, but the last 5 years have seen some of the most reliable machines ever put to market.
