you might be right in that people are having fewer kids. also, immigrants being deported and indians being denied visa renewals might contribute.
but then, school managers just fire some teachers instead of making classrooms more comfortable
but you missed the point entirely. the pandemic created disasters for teachers and nurses. also, the current generation of parents is so shit, kids are basically NPCs these days. teachers have to suffer that shit. because of that, many teachers have left the profession forever...

So I'm new to a team with a micromanager. Have an awkward situation where an (underperforming) senior on my team scheduled a 1:1 with me to complain and vent about the micromanager to me. On one hand - I agree, our manager is bad, on the other hand - this employee is objectively not performing very well. That said, I have a good relationship with our manager's manager - not sure if i should tell them about the cultural problems this team is having. Any senior managers/directors that can help chime in?

The correct action is not to contact the manager's manager. There are two reasons why:
1. You must always follow the chain-of-command. I know it sounds gay and retarded and larpy but it must be so. Corporate takes breaking the chain (aka messaging a superior's superior directly) to be a serious disrespect of the hierarchy.
2. Complaining just means you see a problem. Within HR circles, the first hypothesis will always be that YOU are the problem. The first thing in their mind is firing you, they'll only considering hearing your arguments after you're proven innocent (you won't even be given a chance to defend yourself btw). If Stacy is on her period or if Debora got pumped and dumped last weekend than tough luck pal, you're shown the door.

Because every year, there are people graduating and immediately landing 200k+ jobs. The catch is that these people represent <1% of the yearly cohort, and they're almost always a cut above the rest. I was one of these people. I graduated about 5 years ago. Currently making 375k in cash at Netflix with a 700k NW. I got this job after working 3 years at Google where I wrote infra code that affected a quarter of the world's population. I got that job after interning four times at FAANG. I got those internships because I had a 4.0, interesting projects, and could solve leetcode hards in my sleep.

The cold truth is that most fresh CS graduates today are less capable than I was when I was 14. The difference is when I was 14, I knew I was a retard and didn't expect a top paying job the nanosecond I send out a couple apps. Degrees mean nothing if you can't execute, and if your idea of execution is a TODO app and other resume clutter, then no wonder you're not hearing back.

not him but i was a manager at big tech before i went back to being an IC. it's hard to spot liars during interviews, but it's pretty easy once you're onboarding. everyone embellishes, but people who outright lie are writing checks that your manager is gonna expect to be able to cash out later. when you're oncall debugging a spark app, and you spent the onsite bragging about your expertise with apache tech, your manager is gonna assume you can handle it. if you can't expect to be fired, and fast. i had to fire four people during my time as manager, and all of them had lied about core competencies while interviewing. you can lie if you want, but everyone will know, and you'll be lucky to last a year.

can someone point me to resources on large scale deserialization architectures
at work we support 500+ companies that send us data in their own format and our job is to convert it to our own, do some enrichment and display it to them
right now we "solve it" by having ad hoc deserialization scripts for each individual version of each format for each company, and the integration churn is massive
ideally we'd invert the dependency, but then clients would drop like flies and there wouldn't be any additional guarantee that they wouldnt fuck up then blame us

im sure theres a keyword im missing on this, data pipelines might have a similar problem but i cant find information for handling format cardinality at this level

csv, json, sometimes xml, maybe some other shit, frankly we have no visibility into this and the mappers just run arbitrary code so who knows
data gets pumped in through a bunch of different sources, sometimes they call an API and just http post, other times they push it to an FTP server we give them access to, other times we reverse integrate with them by calling their API / reading into their FTPs
>>107066906
worst case scenario these files are like 300k lines
I think we have some initiatives in that direction but im not sure how well its going to work, AI might fuck up too much to automate it but the alert noise is so high for integrations that I'm sure people are just going to manually accept whatever AI sharts out

we had something that worked a couple years ago that represented a specific line of products then corp wanted to expand and support "everything"
so some architect just decided to represent some shit with arbitrary json
except instead of just allowing arbitrary json we have our own type definition for a json with thousands of keys that are all optional and we try to convert whatever bullshit people send us into this definition which sometimes might even involve computing / guessing at values
the annoying shit is that it doesn't even matter because unsurprisingly a lot of the same terms mean completely different shit when looking at different types of products

Am I - quite literally - the only person who absolutely fucking hates threaded discussion in instant messaging platforms? At least it feels that way, and I just don't get how come it's become the de facto standard for wagie communication.

Whether it's slack or google chat (and I guess it's also a thing in discord now), every fucking time a messaging platform implements chat threads, it turns into an absolute clusterfuck as 'the chat' turns into a pseudo-mailing list, pseudo-forum, pseudo-chat with the worst features of all these paradigms and almost none of the good sides.
People start throwing important announcements in the chat room as if it's a mailing list, even though it'll be buried under (above?) 40 completely irrelevant messages in the span of 2 hours. You can often see people duplicating discussion because someone replies with something in a thread under A's message 2 days later and B couldn't see it, so now there's four fucking threads in which different people are discussing different aspects of the same thing. And then, since everyone's in the chat room anyway, visibility is assumed and people lazy out on properly closing a topic by summarizing and documenting it, even though this isn't stackoverflow where you can properly search, so information just tends to get lost in the depths of nested messages.
And even though it should technically reduce the noise, if you want to be on the same page as all your mouth breathing colleagues, you kind of have to enable notifications for all messages/replies in a chat room and constantly get spammed about all sorts of irrelevant discussions you don't care about.(discussions which a lot of people wouldn't have there, had it been a regular long running chat)

Also it's annoying at the Microsoft cafeterias because each stand has its own ordering kiosks, and most of the time you can't mix&match with another stand unless they're right next to each other. Not really. For several decades school boards around the country opposed building dense apartment complexes because they tended to bring in far fewer tax dollars than single family homes but added more students that had to be accommodated by the school system.
Now that there is a shrinking population of school age children, school systems are shuttering schools and laying off teachers and administrators. They're panicking and pushing for lots of dense, subsidized housing, mostly for immigrant communities, because they have lots of children. They need larger enrollment to keep their schools open and maintain employment for students and admins. Even if those housing units produce less property tax revenue for the school system, it's still better than nothing, which leads to layoffs.

so, I'm kind of obsessed about finding an alternative source of income, something non tech or tangential to tech. I'm good at what I do (offensive sec) and could make good money if I tried hard (and got lucky...) but for some reason I'm completely convinced that this field has no future. am I wrong?
all my investments have been fucking retarded, so I don't trust my judgement much. like, I've been thinking for more than a year that solar is the future, but then I've spent the last year realising it's not really a good business: it would take me like 6 years or more to recover any invested money, and, considering that panels last for 20 years and that energy prices are not stable and literally anything could happen, I would have to keep working to maybe hit it big or go bankrupt in half a decade, maybe even less...
wat do?

Today was my first "real" day at "work" in an "actual" "job"

I am not sure how to feel.
I was left alone to study for ages, felt bad for slacking off on it after the first week, but also that nothing could have really prepared me as well as actually seeing the equipment and what connects to what and how. I assumed there would be much more freedom, but was informed that it's usual "system is as designed (in 1977)" stuff, yet was regaled with stories of seemingly minor modifications with far-reaching implications combined with being stopped by corporate from doing actually very minor part replacement. The culture is very good, and is about what I expected in terms of all being ex-mil people cooler than I, but also an equal measure of ex-mil people less cool and more larper-y than I (to say nothing of contact with active mil people). The systems themselves seem more straightforward than what I gleamed off of engineering documents, but also much more capricious. Even the system that was the 'killer app' part seems to be a footnote for actual activity. As usual with anything in IT, everything Just Werks except for specific "robust" systems that have an insane number of points of failure for how simple they are, and things that rightfully should be incredibly complicated seem quite simple. I guess I never really did learn anything, did I? But also, did anyone else, ever? I am confused, expect the answers to come with experience, have been explicitly told not to feel overwhelmed, and yet feel there is something crucial that I missed but also do not feel overwhelmed, and am making myself feel overwhelmed over that I do not yet feel overwhelmed.

Y'know, in Jewish Stuff, there's a concept used in Passover: basically, to have an excuse to explain everything in excruciating detail every time, there are Four Children who have some questions to answer:
>the Wise, who asks a complicated question with a simple answer
>the Wicked, who asks a simple question with a complicated answer
>the Simple, who asks a dumb question but is answered for the benefit of everyone too embarrassed to ask such a dumb question
then
>the child who does not know how to ask a question
imo the latter is the most important, and is the reason not just that holiday but all holidays continue to exist -- there is someone who has no fucking clue what is even going on, and someone needs to tell stories and raise questions for the benefit of the new generation lest they have to suffer the things being mourned or celebrated first-hand once everyone else forgets about it and repeats history

for example,
>Why are you firing rockets at my house?
>Why can't you stop firing rockets at my house?
>Who is firing rockets at my house?
>Where are my legs?

One gets paid a fixed fee every month.
Other one gets paid for however many hours they worked.

if i do 50 hours a week i can earn 10k/month. overtime is so worth it, if the job is easy and i basically get paid to travel/fly too. if it was salary i won't get OT, but maybe would have enough base to match it idk
