I don't know who runs that but pretty sure it's Fedora/RH devs. They just do it outside of main job to avoid legal issues. Never saw any quality issues there. Updating Fedora even updates rpmfusion as if it's official repo. And, depending on your hardware and tasks, I wouldn't say it's essential.

Fedora
- is Semi rolling release by nature, with constant updates in between versions
- was affected by the 6.16 kernel network bug
- doesn't have a stable release version, one that doesn't change frequently and uses a LTS kernel
- therefore every Fedora version will be and is full of bugs at any given time

Just because for (((you))) it doesn't crash, doesn't make it stable in every sense of the word.

I was here a couple of days ago, complaining that Fedora 43 was completely dead and wouldn't boot. You based motherfuckers got me to the terminal, and in the end I gave up. It's fixed now! We're finally back online! I filled the Fedora forum thread with jizz thanking the guy who solved the problem, so I can't post it here or I'll doxx myself, but it was something to do with authselect. Thank you again for your help about 36 hours ago.

I am using Gentoo and my particular configuration of it happens to work just fine and dandy for me. No guarantee's it'll work for you though.

You need to do your due diligence and test things for yourself. There is no operating system that is perfect for any and every use-case out-of-the box, that is a fallacy.

Different Linux distributions ship different versions of software and even when they ship the exact version that's found and present on another distro it may be built differently with different configuration options or compiler flags, etc.

In short, unless you are using some sort of container image / Flatpak / Snap / AppImage (to some degree) then you are never going to be running the exact same thing as somebody on a different distro.

Debian is a community effort right? While Fedora is sponsored by Red Hat, presumably because Red Hat wants to use Fedora as a test bed. I'm not aware of any such commercial background to Debian.

Yeah it probably is Fedora devs but I think I would want to look into it myself before trusting it as a repo. Anyway Fedora probably is fine, I think Linus used to use it (maybe he still does). I just use Ubuntu at the moment because it fits my needs.

Hi everybody, I am thinking about switching my laptop from ubuntu to mint (having some minor annoyances on ubuntu including with snap packages). My question: is software packaged for ubuntu generally fully compatible with mint (if I make sure I install software built for the ubuntu version my mint release is based on)? I am using a bunch of software (Docker, RStudio, VSCode, Ubuntu binaries from CRAN for R-packages, ...) that is only explicitly available for Ubuntu, will this stuff work on mint?
