I got an older model of this, and I love it just the same.

I'm going to assume this one is slightly larger because the number row was closer.

I bought it for the novelty, not the performance. Gives off "leet hacker" vibes. Great for elevator pitches.

I would love to see a teardown of this device.

See what battery is in it.

Of course like any PC of this form factor Windows is holding it back.

With the GPD MicroPC (the older one, not the 2), one of this flaws is that the screen is treated like a cell phone display. The original MicroPC doesn't have a touch display, but some Linux distros will assume based on the size of the screen, that it is a mobile device and the desktop will appear veritically, unless you tell it at start up to change the orientation.

I've had this issue with my MicroPC when i3wm was my desktop environment. The other issue has been this weird glitch whenever I try to run Hyprland, which has been so terrible, I had to use KDE. I hadn't used KDE in almost 10 years until I started using Arch Linux again on another machine, and KDE is buggy as fuck.

My biggest problem with this style of keyboard is that on some machines, the Up button and the right Shift Key will often clash with each other. You're trying to use the shift key, but instead you hit Up.

On the other hand, on the orignal GPD Micro PC, you needed to press the Fn key to press colon, semicolon, brackets, and braces.

That's unfortunate. The GPD MicroPC had some decent run time. OTOH, the MicroPC 2 looks like it doesn't have a switch to control the fan (which I just left on automatic) and has about twice the processing power as the original.

What the 2 needs is a battery pack that could be mounted in the back. The original had a couple of screw holes on the back to be mounted on something (not VESA, but something else, probably a clip).

Arch works well. Personally, I'd just replace the harddrive on the inside.

Specs on this device https://gpd.hk/gpdmicropc2techspecs

Apparently it uses a 2280 M.2, which is better because the 2230 that was on the original is a lot harder to find online.

The Steam Deck also uses a 2230 (at least the original one does. Not sure if that was changed in the OLED version.) And then there was something about using a different kind of "key". So it looks like GPD decided to change the layout on the inside a bit to make it a bit easier to make some mods. (There's a good chance there could be a better batter than the one it came with on the market.)

Your mini laptop is powered by a fucking Intel N250 and it costs 500 bucks. The cpu in that thing gets smoked by cpus that are 10-15 years old.
The new REAL laptop market will give you much more performance for the money, the used market even more so.

I still have my ThinkPad x13s and it's been pretty good after all these years. Battery life is nuts and and there are arm-native versions of Chrome and Discord and Spotify and Visual Studio and clang and such which are my usual set of applications and emulation hasn't been too bad for anything else that doesn't have native windows-arm binaries.

> Netbooks all over again

Yeah, if you believe in selling crap that was rushed to market. Something HP was defintely known for in the 2000s and early 2010s.

Every Jony Ive knock-off style that killed off whatever Y2K aesthetic / Frutiger Aero style any electronic device had for the fake brushed metal, return to matte white/beige/black minimalist bullshit to kill off any saturated colors, even if they were muted. was the result of some half-assed marketing team trying to cash in on Apple and give rise to the trillion-dollar corporation that now rules the world.

And the worst part is most of you bought it.
