What did Microsoft mean by this? Schrodinger's bad sector, hey - maybe we'll nuke it, maybe we won't.
This is purely for my curiosity's sake - I wouldn't actually use this for data recovery. Blessed are the holy trinity; Recuva, Photorec/Testdisk, ddrescue.

Why is Windows 11 file explorer so fucking gutted, soulless, and retarded?
icons for jpg/png/bmp the same generic shit
refers to 'Type" as "JPG File" and "BMP File" instead of JPEG/Bitmap.
Slow as fucking hell, often doesn't even have the move/copy/paste window appear above the fucking window you just pasted into (it's not brought to the front).
I feel like for any file management I want to boot a fucking Windows 7 VM to do it because that explorer just worked good.

I use cracked Easeus. Doesn't Recuva require cracking, too?
I have some forensic recovery tool (X something or so), takes up a lot of space compared to the ones that get mentioned here, and it annoyingly saves the spare disk space at the end of any file recovered as a separate file.
testdisk/photorec is nice, but takes 10million years to do its thing, damn.

I feel you, bro.
Also, when I want to open a folder with a few hundred pics, it takes longer versus Win7 & 10. If I want to select a pic from there to post here, it takes even longer than normally opening that folder to view pics for some reason, 7 & 10 are not like that.
You just gave me the idea, should I be able to use Ubuntu's file explorer if I install Ubuntu in WSL2?
Also, about Win11 annoying me with *significantly* longer load times on populated folders, this is Win11 IoT LTSC powered by an i7-12700k versus Win7 running on an old Latitude E6330 (that is my only experience with 7) and Win10 running on an Asus TUF A17 I used to have and on an old Latitude E6440 that I also had. And Win11 runs slowest on opening a populated folder despite the processing power of my 12700k. Retarded.
No excuses for the slowness, either, my systems are optimized.

Wasn't that what WSL2 was about? I don't see Microsoft trashing Linux any way.
I'm pretty sure India will just be another headache for Microshaft. Also, that's money they are going to lose once India and its government agencies are no longer customers. EU was, in fact, the ones who started this by sanctioning India and demanding Microshaft cut themselves off, but India sued to get their systems back.

I've been on linux for ages but there's a few programs I want to run natively like Revopoint MetroX, Affinity, plasticity & Topaz so was thinking of installing windows again.
Might get directory opus again if Explorer has gone to shit.
Windows Search can't find my installed apps for some reason even though all of the relevant shortcuts are in my C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder. For some reason the icons got removed, but the shortcuts remained valid, and after moving them to another folder and moving them back, they re-acquired their original icons. What causes this? Why can't my search find my Firefox or any installed app on my start menu? I even pinned them to Start.

All comes down to if the November update comes through in the coming weeks.
I use auto-hide taskbar and after a recent windows update it started lagging like crazy whenever it expands. Instead of revealing smoothly there is now an extremely choppy 5 fps animation.
In this reddit thread:
https://lr.ptr.moe/r/WindowsHelp/comments/1io56wu/after_11022025_security_updates_taskbar_autohide/
they mention uninstalling a particular update (KB5051974), however it is not available in my uninstall list.
They also mention disabling WpnUserService_*, which does fix the issue, but at the cost of breaking push notifications (also, even if you disable the service via registry, it somehow reenables itself whenever you open the action centre).
I have also found some possibly related github issues
https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu/issues/2306
https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu/issues/2212
however, none of the solutions mentioned there worked for me either.
Does anyone have a fix? Really feels like microsoft is giving us the last "fuck you" before ending support for win10.

However, I wouldn't recommend to mess with a work PC like that, if what you need is just the support, you could use MAS to activate the ESU which gives you 3 years. Again, consider if your IT department is competent enough to notice that you made any changes without permission.

There are always some caveats, like currently I'm unable to initialize the RX470, likely due to some driver thing since I can boot a linux with it using exactly the same config

Giving my anecdote. Not exactly the same but maybe simillar.
Recently Gmail has been giving me a lot of mailer daemon errors.
The kind you get back when you send a message to an account that doesn't exist.
And the original message is spam sent from me@gmail.com to me@google.com (non-existant).
Surely these are forged, because otherwise it would mean someone is able to send mail from my account and if they could do that they wouldn't spam me.
But I also can't think of how this would get past Google's filters.
Its fishy enough to stand out and only started within like the last few months.
Not sure what's going on.

So my guess is either some successful spoofing that's somehow tricking mail servers, or my desktop or phone is compromised (unlikely).

Because Windows will always maintain proper support for anything remotely in production there's no reason to update. Also MSIX doesn't really bring anything for developers, especially if you already have a working build and install system.

Question about image viewer programs.
I currently use Honeyview because it just works for what I need. I like that I can right click a file in windows explorer and select "view with honeyview" or "convert with honeyview" and get what I need immediately. That I can right click a folder and display the contents as a gallery for me to look through. It's very simple and convenient to do so.
But Honeyview does not support viewing images that are multiple subfolders deep.
I now need a program that allows for that.
If, for example, I have my reaction image folder organized by expression, and then within the expression folder are subfolders to organize them further.
Example: Despair\Real life\Cat
I want a program that allows me to just right click the Despair folder and see everything in it regardless of subfolder. For it to create a gallery out of everything in those folders
A program that ideally can also be started just as quick as Honeyview because it also hooks into the registry so it can appear in the right click context menu.
Is xnview the answer to my problems? Or is there something else besides getting over my tism.

>Crashes
What the hell do I do now? I know I am acting like a bumbling retard here, but surely I am missing a more efficient way to fix this problem, right?
I am considering just not using the drive and focusing on diagnosing why the computer is crashing first and foremost and maybe ordering a new battery and opening it up to change it.

Apologies, should've been more specific, I mostly didn't go in detail due to character limit and because my main problem was with the external HDD (I should also specify that when I said "crashes" at the end, I meant RECUVA crashed this time, not the computer, which is the part that concerned me as it means there's something seriously wrong with the external HDD, I should've specified that).
The computer randomly switches itself off. Completely random. It just suddenly turns off and restarts. Completely. I initially assumed it had to do with the laptop overheating as I hadn't replaced my thermal paste in a while, but after I did so, the problems kept persisting and it turns out the crashes are completely random.
Looking at the event manager gives me a frequent error of Event ID 41 which happens multiple times per day, which is a kernel-power problem, which is what makes me think it's a faulty battery. Maybe I am wrong there too.
>>107113350
If there's a way to identify if it's those, I'd like to diagnose it. A bad RAM can be replaceable I think, but unfortunately this is a half-broken laptop so the CPU is unfortunately soldered afaik. So if it's a fucked CPU then it's completely fucked and I might as well trash it.
After I resolve this, I am hoping the next step is figuring out how to replace whatever the fuck happened to my data on the external hard disk, which is sort of the main problem for me at least.

>main pc can't accomodate 3090
>decide to put 3090 in aux pc
Now, the plan is to use 3090 mainly for AI and ocassional gayming and I don't know whether to stick wiith Windows on aux PC or switch to Linux since I know both can do AI and gayming fairly well, but
>Linux best suited for AI to save VRAM

yes it is, and you shouldn't get any data lost as long as you keep your key close, most annoyances with bitlocker come from unexpected behavior and updates, but almost never turns into data loss.
it depends more on if you're schizo enough to believe there's backdoors, in that case the alternative is veracrypt, not as convenient but it's the best thing for drive encryptions

I could try that actually. I'll try it tomorrow since it's very late for me to do so now, and I'll fuck something up in the process like I did with my data, I'd rather do it in the day when I am fully focused.
>If you still get random power offs then it's a voltage regulation problem
If that's the case, how do I fix that? If it's even possible.
>Just how fucked up is your laptop?
Pretty badly. Happened due to plastic melting around the laptop hinges when I was running a high-powered game. It's insane that gaming laptops are built with plastic instead of a material that can actually deal with high temperatures. But I learned that the hard way, that was years ago.
I am considering just outright taking screen off and converting it into a halftop somehow. That might also fix it not appearing on the BIOS but I don't know how effective that is. But I'll have to try it tomorrow along with your idea. Fingers crossed it goes well.

Excessive heat damages electronics.
Your motherboard was literally cooked.

This happened all the way back in 2019, since then I installed an external fan setup, so the laptop has since been regularly getting cooled down, so I doubt it was motherboard damage since so much time has passed, but I don't doubt it probably damaged the D: Drive which did end up failing around a year later. Either way, I am lucky the motherboard wasn't significantly damaged if it even was.
The problems with the laptop randomly shutting off started this year in 2025 and I had long since stopped playing anything intense.
If it is the battery/voltage, I have a theory why. the electrical system in this apartment is a mess, and there were frequent blackouts, and I believe the blackouts may have caused a short-circuit or some fuckup in the battery/voltage. I might be wrong though, that's just an idea I had, because the problems started after the blackouts.
>Desktop PC are better for gaming since the literally have breathing room to not get so hot.
Agreed, but I unfortunately travel a lot, so I hadn't had the right moment to actually build myself a Desktop PC (and I was a LOT more tech illiterate in 2018 too, and was a console player before that and only used a Mac before that, so I was a lot more foolish than I am now). That'll change at some point probably, but that's for the future.
This might be a dumb question, but to upgrade to Win10 IoT LTSC, do I need to reinstall Windows? I have Windows 10 installed currently. Is it possible to just do an in-place switch to a different update channel?

The cramped space of a laptop chassis means reduced surface area to transfer heat to and away from there's a reason desktop CPU heatsinks are these massive fist-sized units

>and I believe the blackouts may have caused a short-circuit or some fuckup in the battery/voltage
No, your laptop is designed for sudden losses of power since it's expected to run out of power due to being battery powered.
What would actually damage it would be a power SURGE, which surge protectors are for.
And some multi outlet devices LOOK like surge protectors but aren't.
If your adapter doesn't have a ground prong then it's susceptible to power surges.
> I hadn't had the right moment to actually build myself a Desktop PC
