/ourguy/ just made a pretty important statement about the future of technology. Namely: we are about to get "Edge AIs", which are essentially tiny AI processors, that can generate video locally with no delay and then communicate with centralized servers for heavy thinking tasks. This will allow us to essentially get rid of software, phones, and OSs all together, as the AI can now handle everything in real time.

This may sound like something out of a sci fi movie, but the thing is, this is actually happening in as little as *five to six years*.

I know this place has seen a lot of negativity in recent times, but things like this reminds me why technology is so awesome. If we can get this is 5 years, imagine what we will have in 10? Or 20?

It seems to me that Elon Musk is sometimes a bit overoptimistic about technical advancements, both inside his own company and the world in general.

Operating Systems for example need to be really fast, and are used to abstract hardware differences and to isolate processes. I don't see where an AI running on bare metal has an advantage over an efficent OS for these tasks.

The vacuum tubes transport scheme is a real idea and the Chinese are still working out some of the technology because they're not retards. It's a great way to move cargo. Consider a large distribution hub 50 miles outside of a city center like NYC. Build a tunnel like this from that to various distribution points in the city. You can basically beam goods underground, reducing a huge amount of transport necessary such as large trucks going into the city. Within the cities you can then move things around using smaller electric vehicles.

Using these things to transport humans requires safety levels that are decades away so don't bother. The key is that you can move huge weight very quickly at low cost using this idea.

Basically putting computers on the moon is a really bad idea. You've got no atmosphere to shield from radiation that will gradually kill your chips. You can put it inside the moon so the rocks act as a shield, but then you're stuck deep underground in the moon. Also no good way to cool down on or under the moon ground. It's just awful and on top of that you'd be stuck on a boring grey rock.
