Everybody talks about 2010s era ThinkPads, but those are starting to be fucken old now. How do newer ones (T14 Gen 2 and later) do as far as Linux support and repair are concerned?

from what I've seen they're OK. most people who I've known to make the switch to one have been happy with it.

I've been using a 2019 x390 yoga for a little while with manjaro installed and it works really well.

Unemployed oldheads will tell you nothing beats their librebooted T61 or x201 but if its a machine that you're actually gonna use then i suggest getting something newer.

with that kind of spec it'll be rough getting something that doesn't look like gaming bs.

if it absolutely has to be in a lenovo laptop then you're best off with one of the new legion gaming laptops.

I've heard the razer productivity laptops are decent but you'll be paying out the ass.

At that spec doing graphics work that heavy on the go is crazy and will kick out insane heat from whatever machine that card is in. If i was doing anything that required that kind of power i'd probably do a desktop for heavy work and a small cheap laptop for general tasks.

Thanks, I set it up.
Although something very curious. After I set it up, I still had the busted battery plugged in, and weirdly enough it no longer showed as critical and actually started charging. After I applied the thresholds it stopped charging and is currently stuck at 30%, although removing the charger causes it to show up as -1% on my DE's battery display.
tlp meanwhile shows these stats, I don't know if this means anything specifically.

>FYI, those "genuine oem" batteries for on ebay are counterfeit, just stick to good name brand
Funny thing is, I got told in this general a few months ago to avoid third party batteries and to straight up get the Lenovo battery, so whoever told me that can go fuck themselves if it's true that the batteries on the market are usually counterfeits. Damn shame.

so your defense against the allegation that its slow is that it is slower than a 15 year old budget chip that was clocked down to go in a laptop?
i'm not sure if that logic helps your case.

>I've got DisplayPort, Ethernet, USB 2.0, and 3.5mm audio. Anything more than that is bloat
so you have all those ports, they're all more single usage than a normal modern usb-c port with display-port integration and power delivery and somehow you think its less bloated than a modern equivalent?

I think you're a faggot goysumer cattle (and tech illiterate, ironically) if you buy anything newer than the x30 series, by the way.
I cringe every time I read some faggot post about how they just bought a ThinkPad, how they're "part of the cult" or "fell for the meme" by buying a piece of shit nuPad. The profound ignorance of both the ThinkPad autist culture and computer processing power in general is just too much for me.
It's really no wonder this general has been dead for fucking years, a corpse fumbling around and kept alive by clueless midwits and the occasional oldfag nostalgia posting.

To be fair, I got a T430, but I definitely don't consider myself part of the Thinkpad cult yet, until I start buying and upgrading IBM models, then it's another story. I mostly came here to get advice since I fully admit to being a newbie and want to learn and improve, and I started with the T430 as a "training wheels" exercise so I don't end up damaging something more valuable and older and I can practice on a newer model since I had zero experience with upgrading hardware up until this point (and I travel frequently, never had the chance in my entire life to upgrade or build a PC). I think it's much wiser to do so than buying an older model and doing some retarded shit to completely obliterate it by accident.
>if you buy anything newer than the x30 series
What's wrong with buying an IBM model from 2003-2005 though (i.e. T41, T42, etc)? Genuinely curious.

>silent / near silent / fanless laptop
>15-16" display

>at least 16gb ram, better 32gb
>price around 1000 €

?
I find it to be extremely difficult to purchase a laptop, as fan noise / being quiet / silent seems to be never mentionend by any manufacturer and often neglected in reviews. I just need a laptop that shuts the fuck up while using office applications, browsers / youtube and at most some shitty 2D java games, while not revving its jet turbine right in front of my face.

The goalpost hasn't been moved dumbass, i said that your ports could almost all be replaced with a few usb-c's and it would be less bloated and faster. the original point still stands your IO is outdated and slow compared to more modern equivalents
>I made no such admission. The point was if I need more power (which 99.99% of the time I don't) there are options available.
This kinda brings us all the way back around to the original disagreement. i never said it was impossible to use the older machines, i said that for most people they'll want something more modern for real work. if you're gonna use your machine for gooning and scrolling the basket weaving forum then its probably worth it to run a machine that old for the keyboard and the aesthetic but considering that the first thing i said that you replied too was >>107083168

Yeah, but USB-C sucks, just like your arguments :P
But in all seriousness, yes I know it's "old" but my point is simply that it's incredibly capable for its age so much so that it literally works just fine for my daily driver. When I show it to people and mention that it's 17 years old, people literally don't believe me. It's in mint condition and has some specs (CPU aside) on par with modern laptops (i.e., 8GB RAM, 2TB SSD). I might upgrade in the next year or so to a libreboot X230, but I don't really have a strong need to stop using it right now.

Anonymous No.107097645 [Report] >>107097835

it's definitely capable for its age and if you don't wanna upgrade I'm not here to convince you too. I'm not against the classics either, i have a t420 i refuse to get rid of for that exact reason. i'll stick to my yoga for a daily driver though. lightweight, good screen and decent battery life are way bigger priorities considering i take this thing all over the place.

Mind if i ask why you're looking at an x230?

I used to have one but it crapped out (Battery circuit failure) so i know they're nice machines but i replaced that with an x270 and never looked back.

They do have microcode updates, but you can remove them with the CBFS tool. (Although, keeping the microcode is recommended for stability, plus there's already microcode on the CPU, so not having the update doesn't make you any more "libre".)

There's no Computrace option in the security tab on my X230. It can't be that it just didn't have it installed, right? I've read that all ThinkPads post-2007 or so have the niggerlicious spyware installed onto it. I don't know if it's actually the case that it just never had it installed, or if the previous owner had the right mind to disable it permanently, and thus why it doesn't show up. Wouldn't there still be an option for it in the latter case?

Worst case scenario, since I haven't installed any version of Windows to it, it hasn't properly phoned home yet, and thus hasn't properly activated. If I were to install Windows to it, it's quite possible that I'll end up inadvertently activating it.

I'll install Win10 and check for any processes indicative of Computrace glowing in the background.

Do it only if you are poor.

The only reason this general is even still a thing is because x200/x220 was such a phenomenal computer that you could get it cheaply 10-12 years ago and you could have used it for that entire decade without a problem. This had such a cultural impact that people still think fondly of thinkpads but in truth they've been soldered shit for almost a decade now with marginally better build quality. They are still way better than latitudes for example.

Macbooks on the other hand shit all over pretty much any other laptop due to how much better the M series chips are and apple's build quality in new macbooks is way better. It's just a better fucking computer over all and the OS isn't bad if you can get by with a locked down Unix-like operating system.

The only reason I own a thinkpad is that I *MUST* run linux on my laptop, otherwise I would just use a macbook (I actually own one, and it is great.)

Yeah you can, but you would need to replace the BIOS with something like Libreboot. On an X230 you can internally flash it so you don't need any additional tools.
Intel AX210 and BE200 are good cards, you can find them for cheap on AliExpress. Make sure to get a Mini PCIe version and not a M.2 one. People say that you need to tape over one of the pins for the Bluetooth to work but I didn't do that and it works fine.
Anonymous No.107137734 [Report] >>107140632

I agree with your statements about the X200. Also include the X201 here, because the additional speed from the core i series was great. X220 was already a step down though, because the keyboard felt worse and of course the 16:9 ratio was a step down. Also the overall design was less of a clamshell, so it really felt worse compared to the X200/201.

And here comes the kicker
>They are still way better than latitudes for example.
This is not true IMO. Some modern TPs may have "better" quality compared to other laptops. But absolutely most are shit. Cheap plastic with lots of defective hardware (trackpoint/mouse buttons double clicking, keyboards with the infamous sync issue given you the 44444444444 of insanity). They removed absolutely all features that made TPs good. Battery? Glued in. Chassis? Plastic. Waterspill? You wish.
>I *MUST* run linux on my laptop
I was severly fucked by lenovo when I got a Ryzen TP. This was "certified" for linux. CPU is great, even five years later. Everything else is a joke. This thing does not play well with linux. Battery drains in HOURS when the thing is in STANDBY. Yes, you read that right. This is a known issue they have never even just attempted to fix. Then there is the trackpad/trackpoint issue: This is not running at the full refresh speed you get on windows, because they simply never bothered to fix driver issues in the kernel. This has been known right from the beginning and they sold these machines as linux machines.

Fuck lenovo.

I'm partial to the X series too. T's are too big. Forget P's. There's a trend in /tpg/ for 15" or bigger that I don't understand. Tastes change, there's fewer people with secondary desktops for heavier work, people are more mobile, shittier cooling unless you buy big, more discrete GPU options to be disappointed with, that I get if that's your situation. But small and light portable terminal that isn't a complete dinosaur and has decent battery life is always what I've wanted in a laptop.

People keep saying that the T series has better build quality than the L and E series.
Is this still the case for recent Thinkpads(2023 - 2025)?
What does the T series chassis have that the L and E series lacks?
Looking at the psref they are all made from aluminum now.
For example I don't see anything special in the T14 Gen 6 chassis on the hardware maintenance manual.
I watched reviews of recent L and E series and they don't really have much flex either like the T series.

The hinges on the E14/15 are shit, and you need a ratchet and a 5.5mm socket to loosen them, as they're way too tight from the factory and they will break. You want the screen to want to shut itself about 3 inches before it closes, but still hold itself up above that. The plastic of the chassis isn't quite as strong as the T and L series, which exacerbates the problem.

Only the top cover is aluminum. L-series is all plastic apart from that while T-series has a magnesium frame between the keyboard and motherboard.
>>107150195
L-series has replaceable keyboards too, the same parts as T-series in fact.

In general both series feel cheaper today than in 2020-2021, let alone pre-2017. Especially the flex in the keyboard around the trackpoint is irritating, though it's easy to work around by putting some carefully cut bits of paper around the underside of the trackpoint module.

I mean, having a modular laptop would be pretty cool if you didn't have to replace the whole motherboard to upgrade your CPU. MFF pcs and AIO pcs are laptop hardware either in a tiny case or built into a monitor and many of them have socketed CPUs. Surely it wouldn't be hard for them to have socketed CPUs, and to support CPU upgrades with bios updates as to keep with the "desktop freedom in a laptop" ethos. I'd still be tempted to buy one if they sold a trackpad with buttons.
