They're all dogshit. Translating English to Japanese requires some legit human level awareness to identify context and consider character relationships/ages/pecking order/and so on and so on to even get a grasp in what's actually being conveyed.

Hell most translators cannot correctly translate the Joke in picrel and that's between 2 languages that are like 80% similar and mostly mean what they say (ie not context heavy).

It can't into Japanese slang that is too street-wise for a manga or adult topics for some reason, probably because most LLM is China/India operated and we know they don't like Japan very much. Most useful use for AI with Japanese would spotting Kanji and their use patterns within the text. AI is also impossible when it comes to sound effects.

My brother in Christ, Japanese mangas are not news articles, they are bursting with regional jokes/slang that will make you look like a cousin fucking bumkin if you said them out loud. Which is what makes reading them so amusing to read, at least when properly translated by a human who doesn't have a woke agenda.

If a human can learn how to decipher obscure Japanese slang and regional references, there's no reason why a computer can't do the same. It just needs to be exposed to a sufficiently comprehensive body of work. There's nothing special or unique about Japanese dialects - they can and will be translated just as well as anything else, in the fullness of time. Computers have the potential to be better than us at every field of human endeavour, and that potential is realised more and more every month these days.

It was able to differentiate the correct "pruebalo" given the conversation prior to it so it did much much better than google translate.
