Why isn't our operating system(s) more 3D and intuitive?

the modern windows desktop is fully hardware accelerated by your gpu. press windows + tab.

Because it's a stupid waste of resources, and you can navigate your filesystem quicker without that nonsense. It looks cool in a movie, but it would be ridiculous to have to use a computer that way all the time.

A vector based desktop would need a hefty graphic card. But it would still look CAF.

More like, its a gargantuan task to do in our time, given how entrenched old software is and how everyone is used to the same desktop shit thats been a thing since the 80's.

Big corpos don't give a shit, individuals and small groups don't have the power to do it. Plus it has to be done extremely well, both UX wise and performance wise.

The closest thing we got to this is... Figma

I can reckon someone doing something with ZUI like figma does with zooming and shit, extremely high performance and highest compatibility with current software/hardware. With WebAssembly 3/WebGPU it's possible that some autists will develop it so it would be more of an OS than just a limited use tool like Figma is, and you'll use it right in your browser (or app) from your shitty windows 12 laptop.

Operating systems need to be as light as possible and leave resources available for programs that want to use them. Maybe in the future when we can piss away graphics processing power with zero impact it'll be more of a thing. It also needs to be designed well in such a way that representing things in 3D helps the usability of the interface but sadly the companies developing OS's right now cant even design a good 2D interface and couldnt innovate their way out of a wet paper bag so we're all kinda stuck in hell

We've had 2d desktops for 30 years and they're still slow.

no 3d,because written information is best digested on a single plane. depth won't add to it and will obscure or clutter the information.

maybe a large workspace where you zoomin on parts of it, with eye tracker and some simple brainwave reader that tells when to zoomin or not.

not intuitive, because ui designers need to change things to allow them purpose. a car is intuitive because the steeringwheel and pedals are always in the same configuration.

Those are hardware accelerated too.

It's crazy all the software rendered XT stuff on Linux is so fast by comparison because of the "fuck this bullshit" attitude.

If you fuck around with the widget toolkits everyone just flees to VTEs and browsers. Linux and now modern Windows are great examples of this happening.

Your screen is 2D
Anonymous No.107111089 [Report]
I cant think of way you could make a 3d desktop environment thats more efficient than what we've got, I would be interested in your ideas because it sounds cool but I can't picture how you'd do it in my head at all. Even if we had those 3d-ish displays like the 3ds what would you do?

Unless you use transparent windows you won't see the contents of a window behind the closest window to you. I guess the animations could be more 3D to help you visualize the environment better but the actual window content can't really be more 3D. It's like trying to read a paper that's behind another paper. You still need to move the first one out of the way. Stacking window management already kind of does this. I guess the cube desktop on Linux is probably the closest to what you want. You rotate the cube to see different sides of it where different windows are opened, instead of just moving them out of the way on the same plane.

This is the key: we need tiny little anime girls (preferably with cat ears/tail & in meido outfits) running around on our screens helping us to 'puter. That would definitely be "more 2D & intuitive" IMO.
