I like doing research manually and I even draft my reasoning manually, but actually writing the article itself feels grating sometimes. Coding agents can actually work pretty well for this kind of thing, where you need it to write something and maintain notes in different files and such. I personally use Roo Code for writing as well as coding, with a custom mode for the former, but other agents could work as well.
If you want more of a chat interface, Open WebUI is a simple one that's pretty easy to setup.
Your real problem is the 'locally' bit, because the models that can actually run on consumer hardware aren't capable of much.

I think I have a couple personas where I have hair or eye color described when I want to play a specific character, but I generally don't consider it important. I find when I do define them, I get endless "She stares into Anon's blue eyes and runs her fingers through his brown hair". Age is one of the first things I introduce through roleplay, usually through some sort of context clue. Makes the improv more interesting. The one issue I do come across is that since I often forget to define clothing, the bot just makes assumptions about what my character is wearing that I don't always agree with, but that's on me and not hard to solve.

It's not even the agreeableness per-se, it's how the characters always collapse into these flat caricatures. Some disagreeable girlboss who needs to challenge you on everything or a limp dispirited thing that spams ellipses or the worst, the fucking robot. Good character definitions help, but eventually you need to spend more and more time wrangling it to give you nuance, but deep into the RP is precisely when you *don't* want to be wrangling, since you've presumably got something interesting going that gemini summarily shits on.

Claude Sonnet 4.5 is the best model currently, but Deepseek, Gemini and GLM are also pretty good. Don't even bother with GPT.

If you're talking about the robot thing, I had that experience too, but gemini understood how to do kuudere characters in a character creator card. It could write correct dialogue and understood what not to do so I still feel like the problem is prompting related.
