To be clear I didn't design the ornate rug graphic, that was just found online, but I guess I started as a kid with custom stamps in kidpix and then playing with gamemaker. If you can draw on paper it shouldn't be crazy hard to transition to pixel art though, and it's something gimp actually does well. (gentoo repo also has aseprite, I don't know about the aur or apt, but it's a very nice program)
