Win 8 came about because MS was late to the mobile market and ended up overcorrecting by betting everything on the "tablets will make desktops obsolete" meme. This lead to an absolutely terrible UX because if people wanted to buy a tablet, they'd buy a fucking tablet and not a desktop or a laptop.

Win 10 is a direct consequence of Nadella being in charge and pushing cloudshit and SaaS to the detriment of all other divisions, Windows included.

8 is a meme, no point in discussing it, 8.1 was usable but it was already too late. Win10 had telemetry, very inconsistent UI which was also quite slow compared to 7. The most retarded was the split into 'settings' and old control panel, which still didn't give you as many option as 7 had. Try changing desktop font icons on 10 separately from everything else. The dark mode was too dark, the light mode was too bright, you couldn't adjust it. Also had a lot of microsoft bloat nobody asked for, over hundred processes in the background on clear install. Depressed and flattened look compared to 7.

Windows 8 was all about the mobile panic. MS though they missed the bus and were desperate to create something to compete with iOS and Android. But they ended up alienating their actual core user base Business. When it turned out to be a disaster, they double backed to a Start menu version with 10, but saw the money that Google was making with selling people information and doubled down on that with telemetry on everything.

All MS ever do is copy the latest trend and force their users to accept it. Copilot anyone?

what was the point of the settings app? normies aren't going to mess with their PC settings anyway and it just annoys power users by hiding shit in windows search

Ballmer wanted to force Windows onto everyone as a platform, Satya wanted to offer Microsoft services to all platforms. When Satya finally became CEO, Azure got most of the investment and it did pay off. Most normies don't know but Teams is actually a hell of a beast that destroyed CISCO, Panasonic, Avaya and many other competitors in the CDR industry (Call Detail Records). Same can be said with PowerBI, InTune and other Azure services. I'm not saying they're the best but they're pushing and it has been working, same as with Google and Amazon.
Microsoft is a very big company with some areas still thinking like Ballmer and the old Microsoft, one of them is Office and until recent years, Xbox, which is modernizing but not fast enough. What I don't understand is Satya's hate on hardware, he doesn't like Xbox, and he doesn't push for hardware products as others in the past, and when Microsoft want it they can make awesome hardware (like the Xbox Adaptive Controller), it has not been a priority.
