That was ages ago. Since then US has been jewed hollow. Everything got offshored and to keep the system from collapsing and rebuilding when it still was possible they used various financial schemes to inflate everything, keep people busy with pointless jobs because all real jobs are in China, and let the wealthy invent dumber schemes to make money out of thin air to keep GDP and stocks up so everything looks fine while the country hollows out. There is a reason why West can’t build anything and it’s not just regulations. This whole AI bubble just shows that beyond the facade the country is so decayed that even if government and the biggest corporations combine together to achieve something they still fail because both of them are incapable of doing anything anymore. China will win the AI race even if they are right now “2 years” behind in terms of AI tech, just because they have infrastructure prepared for AI and because their institutions actually work.

Going back to the moon with manned missions makes no sense at this time. The USA has much bigger problems to wrestle with. A manned expedition to Mars is simply out of the question. The duration missions for ISS have proven that.
We need revolutions in power generation, material science and propulsion technologies to even remotely consider going to Mars.
It turns out human physiology is very fragile and only really works with Earth-like environments.

Starship isn't trying to deliver a small capsule to the moon. It's trying to deliver a small duplex (in mass). The Apollo Lunar Module was like 6 tons. The Starship's loading capacity is 100 tons and NASA wants to use all of it to ferry semi-permanent equipment and building materials to the moon. They're not even remotely comparable. China's planned moon mission rocket only has 1/4 that capacity for a moon mission, if that in practice. They haven't even tested it, just a static first stage engine burn. Same with the SLS. It has around 1/4 the cargo capacity of the Starship. Again, not comparable.

It's funny because the whole Soviet space program was seeing the US plan something and doing the more slapdash approach to be a first, with no regard to how it would benefit the next mission step:
>US wants to launch a satelitte
>Rush your own satelitte, it's not ready for launch (Sputnik 3), launch a box with a battery and a radio transmission instead. Explorer 1 had actual scientific payload. (Useful launching systems)
>Soviets send animals in space just to die, Americans sent a trained chimp and brought it back alive. (Proper life-support)
>Soviets launch a bunch of iterative designs that fail, US designs have a larger sucess rate.
>Americans want to put man in space, design a proper capsule and splash down system. Soviets made the guy jump and parachute down then lie about the landing for 3 years.
>First spacewalk was good, I'll give them that.
>Soviets never managed to do a soft landing, they basically smashed probes into the moon with airbags. US design soft landed on the first try.
>Venera suffered from the same iterative design issues.
>First space station was plagued with problems and also resulted in the first deaths above the Karman line (actual space), as they squeezed cosmonauts in a smal capsule, couldn't use pressure suits. Capsule decompressed and they died before reentry.
>Dunno about the Soviet Mars program.

If you read about the American Aerospace industry then you'ld know that it had a serious human resources problem after the 1980s. Silicon Valley, the culture and competition with other industries caused a huge brain drain and the field wasn't attractive for decades despite the popsci spam. SpaceX was one of the few companies that actually could attract new blood (even of it had to rely on European engineers too), the rest developed small dual-purpose rocket and they weren't really successful. The only realistic alternative is Blue Origin that isn't faster.

Not a big space guy, but im optimistic about it. With moon landings, other than prestige what exactly should be the goal? Like would setting up a lunar base help in regards to creating infrastructure to make space travel easier? In my head colonizing Mars with some reasonable method of traveling back and forth to me would be an ultimate goal. How exactly do we move towards that?

I feel like SpaceX is doing a good job in trying to make the process of getting off Earth more feesible but once that is done where do you go from there? space stations?

The chinese lander looks straight up like the landers from the 60s. If Elon actually gets that giant big dick rocket to land on the moon, then we might be able to actually do something new and interesting.
It's not even a race.

It was profitable and American democracy is a farce. Regardless of which party you had voted for, we would have still ended up with the same result. Both democrats and republicans were for global free trade.

SpaceX plan is just fundamentally retarded and requires dozens of additional rocket launches to refuel the first one.

You need dozens of extra ships to fuel that thing to pull off a moon mission. Is that really the future of space travel

Yes? You have to do this if you want to actually build shit in space and send out manned missions beyond Earth-Moon.

Otherwise you're stuck with the shit we have been doing for 70 years. Space probes and two dudes in a tin can who go to the moon for a photo op.

That's all the Artemis mission does too.
The mission is just some basic scientific experiments that could easily be done by an automated probe.

Yes, the first mission. The SpaceX lander could go up and down multiple times, enabling future missions and it can bring a lot of equipment up and down.

Our infrastructure has stagnated, China is beating us in the AI race with a fraction of the budget, our population is angry and stupid, our technological lead is shrinking every day, yet my taxes are higher than ever. Where the fuck is all of this money going?

Reagan was a retard with dementia and the GOP wanted to get rid of those pesky unions demanding things like 'good wages' and 'healthcare' so to break their back they offshored manufacturing.
>mao
They didn't, the US backed the other horse and lost because the other side was even more retarded than Mao(hard to do but it's china)

Debt mostly. In 2025 the US paid $1.22 trillion USD in debt interests.
You can also thank Nixon for ending the gold standard. Everything started going downhill from there.

It was not arbitrary at all. The REAL goal of the US moon landing for ICBM technology demonstration. If we launch a rocket with a detachable bus and land that payload on the fucking moon, we could replace the Apollo capsule with several thermonuclear warheads and place them directly on Moscow. Right after we landed on the moon, we started MIRVing ICBMs. Coincidence? No.

My problem with NASA is that it's always been a thinly veiled front to put glownigger assets in orbit. How many "science missions" had a classified NRO payload in the bay? I bet more than you would think. Like Hubble was a (((NASA))) project until the rumor started floating around that Perkin Elmer accidentally installed the mirror meant for another "customer" (cough...NRO...cough) because it became known that Hubble and KH-11 Hexagon satellites are suspiciously similar and use the same size mirror. I bet there are kinds of redundant money sucks across the NASA/AF/Navy/NRO/NGIA/(insert glownigger acronym here) and the goal is eliminate them and put them under one roof (Space Force). What is going to be gay as fuck is that they will make everything classified and there will be no more public facing Space shit outside rocket launches.
