Does this guy know what he’s talking about or is he full of shit?

This guy shilling for AdNauseam claims this tool fights the ad-machine by automatically clicking ads you don’t want, messing with the metrics and revenue streams of intrusive platforms. On the surface it sounds smart, but I wanted to get the /g/ opinion.

He seems to care (and or talk with people that cares) more about the current problem with the internet than the usual people.
A more detailed on counter ads and datamining would be a waste of time.

Unlike other youtubers he's organizing more useful things like the wiki with guides, post COVID killed a lot of security guides, etc. (cyberpunks are dead, lmao)

seems like a bad idea. the fake clicks will likely be easily filtered, so it won't affect CPM metrics. otoh, instead of blocking all connections to the ad server, you will be connecting to every ad server and telling them what site you are visiting, effectively allowing them to track you.

It's not exactly trivial to filter fake clicks, but yes it can be done.

But I think Rossmann has seen the power of the crowd, and has become a fan of Kant. If EVERYONE did Adnauseum, then the Ad Economy would die, which is a good thing.

This is really a philosophical and legal debate about ETHICS not about technical details.
The best argument against Ad Nauseum is that it is "click fraud" and therefore illegal.
The counter argument is that you don't personally make money using Ad Nauseum so it's not fraud, and your "protest click" is 1st Amendment protected speech.
Then you have the old Linus Tech Tips arguments that advertising is part of the "social contract."
Compared to the device ownership argument of pro-adblock.
Adblock has never really came up in Court before, so Rossmann better be picking a fight and willing to cover legal defense.

The general consensus was to not defend Ad Nauseum being removed from the extension stores, to build a moral high ground, assuming internet companies like Google were operating in good faith, but that users do have a fundamental right to block traffic to their device.
I would argue that ManifestV3, and other changes, revoked Google's good faith privileges, thus backlash is warranted.

Think about it logically. What do you accomplish when you install adnauseum? You generate revenue for the ad exchange (Google/Meta) at the expense of ad buyers. While it may be morally right to fuck over any and all entities involved in online advertising, fucking over one entity while enriching another just makes you an agent for the latter. Don't be Google's good little goy, just use an ad blocker like a normal person.

It's the other way around.
What the US does other countries copy.
The US has a very powerful Constitution and Courts can overturn basically any law, hence draconian laws in other countries like those UK laws won't really work here.

States passed internet ID laws before UK went full retard, but Stares have zero enforcement capabilities, or the ability to stop VPNs.
If it starts having a real measurable effect on free speech, Courts will revisit it and kill it.
The US will never get as bad as UK or Germany in this respect, it's all a soft-power approach here.

That was the internet Google forced onto us 15 years ago and that's why except for Firefox others Browsers couldn't keep with the ever-changing protocols created to force this situation.

Malware ads aren't themselves malware. They are ads that attempt to trick the user into installing malware. Simulating clicks on them does not lead to installing malware. It is inert. In the extremely rare case that the ad itself is malware, ie it has a sandbox escape, xss, etc, not clicking on it wouldn't protect you from the malware. In the occasional case that it did need a user interaction, eg to steal the clipboard contents, a simulated click would not qualify.

>>107137492
That is true but only partially. Most of the ad requests are blocked at the network level as they can be easily filtered by FQDN. The rest is covered by fixing page layout and styles so websites don't look weird.
The edge cases are handled by per site rules that you picked in your uBlock Origin settings.

>That was the internet Google forced onto us 15 years ago
Not really, people get blinded by free money for ad space because they actually pay you for showing ads on your site.
No one is forcing a website to show ads, webmasters chose to implement them themselves because they make them money.

I wouldn't listen to him about any of that. He can hack stuff together but usually in a terribly unoptimized way. "When all you have is a hammer everything is a nail" seems to be his approach.

I find it really weird adnauseam is getting so much exposure now. Last I heard of it was like 10 years ago and everyone moved onto piholes if they were serious about blocking ads. I guess it's taken on something of a political protest usage now rather than just as a way to combat ads.
