it stops bots without paying the cloudflare racket
ai pushers hate it because it stops crawlers (personally, I whitelisted the huawei crawlers for political reasons)
"cloud" providers hate it because they sell proprietary alternatives
/g/ hates it because they get their opinions from people employed by the former two groups

I'm not sure if its intentional or not, but most of his plugins have a kinda retro low-budget vibe to them. So it's useful if you are going for that vibe. I'm not familiar with GEGL, so I don't know if it could be used to make more "modern" effects.
The other thing is that guy seems to be the only person who is really bothering to explore the engine.

Why do they always have such gross looking hair? Like the one thing you can actually do something about and style to look good and instead it's always just stringy seaweed mops that make them look homeless.

I'm consulting for the local govt at the moment and when the topic of the new "captcha" came up, the guy started by saying it's not really a captcha. I thought it'd be hilarious if he started presenting that new thing they've been spamming on /g/ lately.
He did. My govt will soon be using anubis on its sites.
