Originally, everyone just sort of put up with nazis, pedos, etc. existing online. Nobody liked them, but nobody hated them enough to care about them. Eventually journos and assorted filth noticed this and started complaining about it. Advertisers started threatening to pull out, politicians threatened regulatory action. Thereafter, platforms would be in conflict with their users, constantly banning things to clean up their image for advertisers. A "prank", mild as those are, wouldn't go over well, because users had animosity towards the platform.
