vr was always going to be a niche boutique level area of tech. the pandemic grew it in hype but its dead now since people are able to go outside. its still pretty cool and it will likely grow further but it will take alot longer then the past 5 years.

Honestly I don't understand it. They tried to do all those remote work type deals during covid. That I sort of get. It's just too much money for no benefit for the average company. But then even as a game console it failed. I think that's the surprising part to me. You look at something like the wii. One of the best selling console of all time. It's just remote/hand tracking. VR has that plus entire virtual enviroments. So either people prefer IRL interactions or its a price point thing?

No games you can play for more than 20 minutes at a time, so no one can justify the pricetag. For VR to succeed they should have just made it a general purpose plug-in-play display, but no they got really greedy and pretentious and had to create their closed garden ecosystems to attract investors.

In no way is VR the future in its current form though. The hardware is way too finicky to setup and use. Hand gestures and such in particular are mediocre. The software ecosystem is completely nonexistent. The only areas I see VR having some traction are edutainment, medical and corporate training (think VR environment to change a brake shock on a car).

VR is only good for certain things like rollercoaster videos or games like superhot/beat saber

everything else about it (games like skyrim vr/porn/vrchat) are all just dogshit slop that don't behefit from being VR

The Apple Vision Pro has an app for doing that very thing which is why I mentioned the example. The app demoed on the AVP felt like an alpha version though.

It's a big heavy thing on your fucking face, visuals are nowhere near IRL on any software because the hardware isn't there yet. audio is a JOKE, real 3D audio is extremely important for immersion, but creating realistic audio is a massive challenge, so most developers don't bother. the tracking is AWFUL, with a special setup you can get it kind of 'acceptable' on some areas of the body, but the tracking is years away from being good. the price of the hardware, the lack of good software, nothing is befit of the title 'Virtual Reality'.

it was chasing a usecase instead of providing one out of the gate, plus it quickly left the research stage and jumped directly into the entertainment sector.

The need for actual physical space makes it inaccessible for people who have small living spaces.

Mountains of issues involving hardware and software bugs causing motion sickness and even higher cases of seizures.

If you have any sort of vision issue, your experience will be fucked unless you wear your glasses with the headset or get custom lenses.

There is only three (3) titles worth using VR for.

-Beat Saber
-Half-Life: Alyx (if you care about HL, anyway)
-Superhot VR

Two of which can be played "flat"/non-VR (Superhot non-VR along with Mind Control Delete/SH2 and Alyx as a mod for it).

Beat Saber is just DDR with lightsabers, so really you can chalk 3 for 3 that can be played non-VR.

...So: What is the point of buying a VR headset if you can play it's killer apps non-VR?

The day we have it in such a small package as glasses and resolution is high enough that it looks real it will take off.

If now you have full dive type vr that's also gonna take off even if it takes space and you need to be laying down.

You need 8K videos, and this is confusing because 8K VR videos have ~4000px but added together would be ~8000 side by side. But you need 4000px on a 2000px headset because you're seeing 90ish/100ish degrees of a 180 degree video. And we're talking like, 20GB give or take depending on the length. But yeah even on a shitty quest 2 it's impressive when the both the video quality and the camera is good. The camera matters more than the resolution honestly. If the color and tones aren't smooth it looks like shit

It's actually a massive pain in the ass. Wearing the stupid thing on your head, navigating the annoying OS they all have built in - why can't I just have a fucking headset that plugs into my HDMI out or something and acts purely as a monitor? How fucking hard is that?
My headset hasn't been used in probably 6 months, last time I turned it on (because a friend wanted to try it) it had logged me out and I couldn't remember my fucking password.
Then there's the constant eye strain, headaches, general fucking blurriness when you're trying to read a menu etc. Probably the only decent games were Half Life Alyx and that walking dead one and I couldn't be fucked finishing either.

All that's true but it really is just the lack of good software. It's kind of like how easy it is to criticize early 3D games, but there were enough good ones even though the Saturn/PS1/N64 era is almost a managed disaster compared to the PS2/GC/Xbox in maturity. Once you got into the index/quest 2 era of VR you couldn't really blame the hardware anymore. If I had to pick to an area to agree most, its the weight. The Quest 2/3 are not viable without a battery strap. They have to be counterbalanced. I tried going back to a non battery headstrap to sanity check if the extra overall weight was worth it, and I couldn't do it. The quest 2 and 3 could be completely rear battery too and move about 50 grams. That and no premium audio add-ons are fucking crimes against VR.

What headset do you have? Also they don't all have an annoying OS built in. You can use a steam VR headset. Actually the HP Reverb G2 became a steam VR headset recently because microsoft stopped supporting WMR. I think some other WMR headsets did too. It's called the oasis driver. Not sure what the PSVR2 on PC situation is, it may or may not be like that.

Anyway it can't be just a video cable because it's not just a display, you have 3 6dof tracking devices, microphone, and controllers. And then you get into eye and hand tracking, wireless, etc.

I've only got one of those cheap Pico ones. I don't doubt a better quality one would eliminate a lot of the blur and headaches, but it was enough for me to learn I'm not a fan.

Yeah the thing is though I'm wondering if your whole user experience is what can be expected from a chinese headset. Did you ever try steam VR 2.0 that hit a while back? That made PCVR a lot easier and you just launch app. The only thing you have to be autistic about is a dedicated wifi router for VR.

It costs like 400 bucks for the shittiest entry level, going up to a few grands.

People are willing to pay a lot of money for their phones because it provides a lot of utility for them for years. But paying as much for some dorky headset just for games, porn and lack of much software doesn't look so appealing. You get about the same thrill if you just look at a browser page, at almost no cost.

The shapes and figures are all coming at you, colliding in your mind, and you have the physical expectation of feeling an impact but then nothing happens. I think this is very confusing to a mind, that's why we like having visual content flattened and kept at some distance, in front of us.
