So, I started experimenting with the phase of existing humbuckers. It seemed that they all sounded much more similar when the physical orientation of the humbucker was flipped, and the electrical phase reversed as well. Technically reversing the phase alone can be correct, but the overall phase relationship makes the pickup sound like EMGs. The issue with the double (sometimes triple by flipping each coils phase) was if there is no middle pickup, it can be a bit squealy under high gain. Besides that, the overall tonal response, clarity, definition, every single sonic aspect is enhanced in this method. By changing the ground from actual North to South as intended, the humbucker is simply better. For existing pickups, they sounded similar though. This indicated that the only reason why north would be ground, is that by generating the signal in opposition to the field lines it would make the winding an interference pattern. Pickups from the same manufacturer using the same materials resulting in the same DCR ratings with the same wire gauge and coating with the same magnetic orientation sounding different... it's the only possible way. For it to go away when the magnetic orientation is changed would indicate its similar to signal propagation on motherboards. In /k/ terms, if you dont count the ounces you'll feel the pounds type of deal.
One of the biggest issues for pickups is EMF interference. Scatterwound coils are proven to be more resistant to this interference, yet generally only the boutiques utilize this. They're potentially intentionally misleading buyers to purchase a product that is usually capable of being configured better than it is being sold to them...
