My last 2 pairs have been Raycon Everyday earbuds, loved having the ability to either block out all outside noises completely or have the microphone pipe in outside noises. Major complaint on them is unreliability in charging the damn things. On both sets it seems like it's a guessing game on whether the earbuds will charge in the case or just sit there zapping battery until you use them again.

They're actually very good, with an EQ to have more bass they sound nice

Ok thanks, I tried it. It was really hard though, because every time you increase the tone/frequency, it sounds louder. Also I can't go above 5 or 6k because then it becomes deafening, even at 1% volume.

But it's a step forward at least. One step closer to being able to EQ. Thanks.

Yes, I agree at home you don't want any black absorbers on the wall, a thick curtain like that is what I'd call "treated". Maybe put a thick rug on the floor between the speakers and yourself. To quickly evaluate the reverb in a room, I usually clap in my hand once; in naked rooms you can almost hear the sound jumping from one wall to the other

that's why sites like owlphile (currently down cause of retards) are recommended. it has nice tools to do sine sweeps and EQ.
That way you can do a continues sweep in both directions and listen for actual change in loudness. On a relatively fast sweep peak(or dip) will be perceived as sudden change in sound instead of continues rise of frequency. It sounds something like doppler effect.
Also personally I can move IEM inside my ear without breaking seal and literally hear peaks shifting.

The phones out are ok but some iems may benefit from an amp, you can do that by using balanced (XLR)/unbalanced (RCA) line outs (if your dac has it) or by using a phones out to RCA cable and then connecting that to external amp. A tube amp adds nice harmonic distortion which sounds very good, so if you have the budget for a tube amp that isn’t one of those hybrid ones, I’d suggest going for an external tube amp connected to the DAC.

On the squig link site, you need to click play, then click on the frequency slider to focus it (set it to ~3 kHz), and then you can use the arrow keys to make a slow sweep. don't use the mouse to move the slider

Etymotic Kids and Etymotic ER2XR. Love the latter, but one side has become lower in volume to the point of being barely audible. Wearing comfort is OK (always wear them over-ear), passive noise-cancelling is nice, yet I could settle for less deep insertion.

Various IEMs from the guide could apply, the Simgot Supermix 4, Binary Chopin, ... But I'm stuck in choosing. Recommendations welcome for IEMs with good noise-cancelling.

well I start at 3 kHz, go up for a couple second until about 7 kHz, not much happened so far, then at some point it becomes louder for one second until it's uncomfortable, and then another second until it's back to normal. usually the peak is approximately 1000 Hz wide and there are two of them, e.g. from 7 to 8 kHz, or from 11 to 12. then after the sweep I go back to where I found the peaks, reduce the volume a bit, and go back and forth between 7 and 8 to find the loudest point - this will be the center frequency for the eq. the q value I approximate with the formula q = center_frequency / frequency_range, and then I guess a negative gain, apply the eq, and see if I perceive it as flat by going from 6 to 9 kHz

Most listened set right now is kz EDC pro; nice tuning, fairly easy to pick out different instruments. QKZ X HBB Khan; bass can sound a bit overpowering. Vocals a little distant. Wan'er; a little thin sounding, not exciting. Moondrop aria; too grainy. Chu II DSP, nice tuning, bit light on the bass and not detailed enough.

I essentially am looking for an upgrade to the EDC pro's. I'm interested in trying out a planar but doesn't have to be.

I listened to the Gen 2 Airpod Pros.
IMO they're not bad, although I do prefer the sound of my Aria.

The nozzle filter probably got saturated with moisture/wax. Best way to test it is to remove the filter and listen if it's louder than the other side. Also keep the glue on the filter since you have to put it back to make it listenable again.

Got some of those cheapo Venture Electronics Monk Plus earbuds that are $20 on aliexpress and they're a bit boomy out of the box, tried downloading a few of the EQ presets made for them that I could find through the search thing built into Peace Equalizer and all of them sounded weird and unnatural, so I picked the least weird one and slowly reduced the problematic sections until I had an EQ that barely nudged the treble but kept most of the bass adjustments, just slightly softened. So I kept the 'shape' of his EQ but weakened it everywhere, in some spots more than others.

And the result sounds a good deal better than no EQ at all, so I guess I'm a believer. But I'm not satisfied with the EQ profiles being uploaded to the internet. They try to accomplish too much.

The end result now sounds a lot like my HD650s. I'm amazed by what kind of audio you can get for pennies in 2025, it wasn't like this in 2010

You don't need a DAC. Well, you need one, but one for $9 sounds the same as a $200 DAC. Literally the same chip in all of them. So if you're on Apple, get the Apple dongle. If you're on Android, get something like the Fiio KA11 (at most).

The orange Salnotes Zero tips were enough to make the Gate sound good, I use them on the Q1 Pros too.
The Q1 Pros aren't bad, but they have a few rough edges, the Gate is a lot smoother and easier to listen at a consistent volume. With the Q1 Pro costing almost twice as much, you are mostly paying for the shell quality, not any driver improvements.

Gate is definitely better for rock and rap music, but the Q1 Pro might be better for vocal and pop music unless you are treble sensitive.

Only IEMs with non-linear impedance, which planars aren't. And it's not just bassy, hexa will become brighter for example. You can see what's going to happen by looking at the impedance graph of the IEM but there's genuinely no reason to use high impedance amps.
