There are certain packages which can only be installed through Anaconda.
GDAL is one of them, I think, but there are plenty.
If you want to distribute a package that depends on any of these you also have to use Anaconda to build the package, which is something I do.

The only reason to use Anaconda and Miniconda, which you probably would have been fine with, is to have separate environments. The only reason you would need separate environments is if you're using other people's projects and they have different requirements. If you just want to learn Python, you don't need either.
