I've got 3 years working in security.
What's to stop me from forming an LLC and providing Cybersecurity Consulting to small to medium sized businesses in my area?

I don't know, you tell me, what's stopping you?

Absolutely nothing and considering the current meta you're actually behind, most wouldn't wait more than 3 months from zero to start selling their "expertise". Get with the program gramps, just bullshit everything and charge a premium.

I've never started a business before and am hesitant at doing so. I've been chasing work with other companies for about the past year now to no avail. I've got some savings but haven't done enough research to feel safe actually pulling the trigger on this idea.
tl;dr the task seems daunting

That seems wild to me. Wouldn't you be setting yourself up for failure with that amount of inexperience?

The entire field is basically a scam anyway and most businesses don't give a shit beyond checking off an item on a list like yep got that cyber secured. By the time anything bad happens you've moved on and in any case just blame someone/something else.

In case anyone was wondering, this is why you don't take advice from 4chan.

Just don't taunt any teenage hackers and you'll be fine.

Yes, paying a cybersecurity consultant is totally at the top of a small business' priorities right now. Convincing anyone they need you unless they're currently experiencing a problem is going to be hard.
